Hi all!
My name is Andrea and I'm a renal social worker. I've been reading this forum for several weeks to get an idea of the issues and needs that are important to kidney patients. I've always worked in the medical field, but this is my first experience with dialysis, so naturally some of the patients are a little weary of me right now (I've been in this position for 5 weeks). Hopefully participating in the discussions here will give me some much-needed insight - not to mention a welcome distraction from paperwork!
I'm married (five years last month!) and have an eight year-old son and two spoiled lap dogs. I'm addicted to
American Idol
and
Desperate Housewives
, which are the only shows I get to watch other than cartoons. My son has Asperger's Syndrome, which is a mild form of autism, so I also enjoy advocating for causes that are important to me. I'm very excited to add CKD/ESRD to the list!
Anyway, I'm glad to have found this forum and I look forward to meeting you all!

Welcome to IHD!
We're always glad to have some of the staff join us. We don't hold back here, so it's a good place for you to understand what your patients go thru.

Welcome to IHD Andrea,
It is great that you take your job seriously enough to really care. I hope you never become numb to the concern of your patients.
This concern will help you become the best you can be in your field.
I hope you enjoy IHD and post often, we have a few members who work in your field, and a few that probably know enough who should work in your field.

Andrea to the community, you will find this forum friendly and filled with much experience and knowledge. I have an idea of what you go through with your son, my niece's son is autistic, but higher functioning than some. You must have much patience. Thanks for taking the time to learn from others in your field and from the patients themselves!

Welcome to our community! You have taken a wise step, because here you will get to see lots from the perspective of the renal patient. It always pleases us when the people who work with us take this kind of interest.
Feel free to ask questions (and to answer some). I hope you are not too thin-skinned, since this is a place where people vent and sometimes social workers get it! But you can get your own back, by posting in the section for Dialysis:Employees where you can vent as you like!
This is really more than a community. If you read the thousands of posts carefully, you will see that we have become a real family.

Welcome to the web site. Get lost in here and read some of our posts. You will be really informed about a renal patient's point of view.

Hello Andra and welcome to IHD. I've had a great Social Worker and a Lousy Social Worker. The difference was the good one Knew all about ESRD. She didn't look dumbfounded when I was upset when I had to have a fistula gram. So get out on the floor and talk to the patients. Don't tell them they are depressed! They know it! Who wouldn't be depressed? If they are happy all the time something is wrong with them. I hope you find this site useful and pass it on to your patients.
