I have now been doing PD on my own for about 2 weeks. I had a very rough start with a fibrin-riddled catheter and slow fills and even slower drains. But now I use heparin on a daily basis and it has made all the difference in the world.
At the end of last week, I hauled in my 4 daily drain bags and 24-hour urine collection for my very first PD adequacy test. I was really nervous to learn my results. It turns out that I'm very adequate.
Whereas 1.7 is an acceptable number, mine came in at 2.23!! My PD nurse was very pleased and told me to keep doing what I'm doing. As I have been short-filling for most of the time (1600 or 1700 ml. per fill) that is good validation that that's fine for me. For now. Soon I will have my first PET, and even sooner I will be able to get my neck catheter removed and then can take a shower and wash my hair like a human being (after 3 months of abstinence)!
