LETTER: Former Harvard employee, widow, seeks kidney donorCambridge —
My husband, Philip Meuse, who was planning to be my kidney donor, just passed away suddenly of cardiac arrest and I am now seeking a kidney donor. Philip was the love of my life and I am so heartbroken.
I have a genetic kidney disease, Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD), and unless I have a transplant, I will die. I am asking someone to consider helping me.
My connection to Cambridge is longstanding. Philip was an optician in the Cambridge area for many years and just retired in January. He grew up in Cambridge and is a graduate of North Cambridge Catholic High School. We met when we both worked at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory.
The kidney transplant would take place at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. There is no cost to the donor; all expenses are paid by my insurance. Any travel expenses and other related expenses, including loss of work time, will be paid by me.
The minimally invasive surgery, which is laparoscopic, would only require a few tiny incisions and the donor could leave the hospital within three days. All normal activities, including returning to work, would resume within three to four weeks, depending upon the type of work. (A few small stitches would need to be removed two weeks after the surgery.)
