Tomorrow morning I go into the hospital (at 5-friggin'-30!) to have my mitral valve replaced.  I will probably be in the hospital for at least a week.  The surgery is expected to last from 4 to 6 hours, and I will be in the cardiac ICU for at least 2 days.  (For at least 12 of those hours I will be kept unconscious so my heart valve can rest and heal.)

I'm getting a mechanical valve, probably a St. Jude.  My concern is that I will be able to hear it clicking and it will drive me crazier than I already am!

The cardiac surgeon told me that I will be getting dialysis during the operation, so that I can just rest and recover and not need dialysis right after the surgery... two less holes in my arm!  :)

Anyway, when I get home I will post my experience!

good luck, I hope all goes well for you.  Make sure to walk around in the hopspital gown with your ass hanging out and act like you just don't know.... I find the nutrition room and go there and get snacks until some nurse finally has the guts to tell me or ask if I need help tieing my gown, it's fun! ;D

I join with the others to wish you all the best.  Keep hanging tough!  You will make it.  Looking forward to your particular slant on your experiences there. (In fact, I can't wait ;D)

I just wanted to let you all know LifeOnHold passed away Monday January 30th.  I'm her Fiance' Rick and I must say it was a shock to the surgeons as much as us.  She had made it through the Mitral Valve operation and was even moved out of CICU at one point.  They were concerned about her pressure being low and she was in a GREAT deal of pain.  Then after dialysis on Saturday they were never able to raise her pressure.  It happened so fast and the doctors didn't seemed to know for sure the cause of it.  They seemed to think it could have been a clot that was keeping the blood from flowing throughout the body.

The wake is tomorrow and funeral is Friday.

She found your site very helpful and therapudic and I hope her keen insights were as helpful to you as yours were to her.

Thank you all again for making the effort to help her.

If I find out more, I will return.

I hope to figure out how to start a NEW post but, if I can't then maybe bump this one up.

Take care all, Rick

Rick, I am SO sorry.  LOH made me laugh so much.  I loved to read her posts, and I loved her even though I didn't know her personally.

I am heart sick that she is gone, but I know she is in a better place.  Again, my deepest sympathy to you and her family.

Rick,

I am so sorry for your loss.  She touched alot of people here, me included.  Please let me know how I can send flowers.  I don't know what else to say except I hope all her dreams come true where ever we go when we pass.  God bless you.

This was a very hard one again.  Here I was looking forward to her cracking us up with her own brand of humor concerning her experience.
Please let her loved ones know that she made a real difference to our existence.  We will never forget her.
May she rest in peace.

This is really sad, very sad. She had great hopes and really fought hard. Am sure she hears us and sees us somewhere from above and that really connects us all in union.

I only got to know her sense of humor from posts over a brief time.  I miss her, too. She had a great sense of humor.

I barely knew her, but I miss her.  I think about her just about every time I come to this board.  Jamie too.

A Prayer for LifeOnHold

We pray to God or what ever Supreme Being there is out there
That LifeOnHold wherever she is has peace and love.
I ask that her soul be granted whatever it is that it needs
in the next life, so she may be whole and complete.
Souls that touch hearts the way she did
Need to be rewarded in the next life or plane of existence.
May her soul's sense of humor touch others as it touched us.
I pray for my friend in the next life.
Look down upon us with everlasting love.

Amen

I never got to know LOH... my Loss.

It is my belief that her body is made whole and she is enjoying the life she deserved.

Comments made by her friends here on this site only affirm that it is my loss.. to never have known her.
