Me: "I feel horrible."
Nutritionist (In I told you so tone): "That's what happens when you skip treatment."
Me: "I'll get in a multi-car pile up and get banged up so badly that I cant move for a day? wooooow."


She was not happy with my response but hey she was being snotty without knowing why I missed treatment.

It's crap like that that makes me so glad that I switched to home hemo.  My old dietitian was a useless twit who couldn't fathom that I didn't want to spend my entire ONE day a week I wasn't at dialysis or work in the kitchen.

Never have liked folks who use guilt as a communication tool. I got enough of that from my mother!

I understand your irritation but I would have felt compelled nonetheless to explain adult to adult that I wasn't happy about having to "miss" a treatment either and that I didn't actually "skip" one.  Rather, I calculated the risks and made what I thought was a valid and reasonable decision.  Of course I don't know this particular nutritionist but I always think that, if at all possible, it helps to have these people as allies rather than adversaries.  My dietician was a particularly unknowledgeable one and I ended up spending some time explaining to her that she really needed to come to speed more on resource info for people just going on D...like recipes...and lists...and I gave her some websites etc.   I found it helpful to tell her that since she would often encounter folks who would NOT take charge of their diet and treatment, she should be ready to actually be helpful to those who did plan on doing so.

I know it is easy to get upset with people that speak down to us like that, however, she is there to help you and if she feels you aren't doing everything you can to help yourself then her time is wasted.  As a professional she should have handled it better, but she probably hears excuses everyday and you just happened to be her 100th pt with an excuse.  Perhaps if you explained to her why you didn't go to treatment she'd be a bit more understanding.  If I were at D sitting next to you and knew you missed a treatment and didn't know why, I'd secretly roll my eyes at you and feel that you deserved to be feeling crappy too.  I know it is being judgemental and not what you wanted to hear, but I think it is natural to have no empathy for someone unless you know the entire story.  Kind of like feeling sorry for a drunk that gets a hangover. 

Was the weather so bad that you didn't want to risk it?  Is that what happened?

I'm sorry pagand, I thought you'd had to miss because of weather.  OMG, did the nutritionist not know about the accident....there were so many things that should have been said to her...

Reframe her comments.  She was wrong, sure, but at least she cares about you getting your treatments.  It would be worse if she didn't care.  I'm sorry you got in a car accident.  Those are never fun.
