need advice

Hi , my husband started CAPD this week. He had three days of training at the clinic and then started on his own at home on Thursday . Since Thursday his BP has steadily crept up and he is retaining a lot of fluid in his legs . Does anyone know why this is happening and what we can do about it ? I will be grateful for any advice .

How are his UFs? It sounds like he's not pulling off enough fluid. Maybe use a stronger bag? Definitely call your nurse on Mon for advice.

I'm thinking the BP is going along with the fluid retention - they tend to go together. My PD nurse gave me the freedom to mix strengths if my BP started floating around or it looked like I was retaining fluid. Did his nurse advise him that he could adjust his strengths if he started seeing those signs? If so, I'd use a bag of the next strength up and see if it helps. He definitely wants to get hold of the clinic first thing tomorrow.

I agree with Joe, When I start to retain more I switch from the yellow 1.5 bags to the green 2.5 ones. I did a manual with a 2.5 for that very reason. As I have retained more water my BP has risen. Listen to Joe, Joe knows. :-)

I might suggest an additional bag (exchange) with a green before you jump into reds. Our neph explained that the more reds you use, the harder it is on your peritoneum. Hubby was using mostly yellows with one daily green for the 1st exchange of the day unless his BP started climbing and then we would use more greens and occassionally a red.
