Second Evaluation Done
«

I had my transplant evaluation at California Pacific Medical Center today. Everything went well, they said I was "an easy patient" - everything looked perfect for putting me on the list there. All I have to do is get my original blood typing from UCLA sent over (which I fear might be a hassle - UCLA hasn't been good at doing anything in a timely, caring manner) and then I'll be on the list up here.
The wait time is supposed to be 6 years. I'm hoping my interested donors get a better chance here than they did at UCLA. If they don't, I might think about transferring my wait time. I'm still waiting to hear a definite answer, but the nephrologist did some calling around and told me that the extra wait time from the SoCal pilot program (backdated to when I started dialysis) "probably wouldn't" be added if I transferred my time, so that might not be worth it. I don't know.

Good for you for getting this underway! It's all really frustrating, isn't it.

I just got it confirmed, the "extra" wait time won't count if it's transferred. I might still look into the processes of swapping time - if I can move my 1.5 years of actual waiting time up here, and keep the other 2 years of "extra" wait time down there, that might be worth it, but only after I get my living donors evaluated and everything.
I left a message with my coordinator at UCLA to get things sent up to CPMC. As soon as that happens, I'll be listed. I've given my two donors the number to call to start the process. Everything's moving again - I just wish it'd move faster!

Well, I don't expect to "get the call" for years, but with luck you might see a "donor was accepted, transplant is scheduled" post sooner!

My hubby had a kidney / pancreus transplant at UCLA in 1999. I don't know how far you live from UCLA, but this info may be helpful to you: At the time of his tansplant, we lived in Orange County. After he was released from the hospital, he had to go in for blood work every day for a week or so. The insurance paid for him to stay at Tiverton House (kind of like a hotel for patients) across the street for the hospital. They even had a shuttle that took him to and from the transplant clinic. It saved me from missing work to drive him to UCLA every day.
Best of luck to you.
