My mother called today to let me know that her primary care physician told her today that her kidneys were failing and gave her a list of nephrologists to call.  She did not have any of her lab information.  I told her to make sure that she gave the nephrologist permission for me to speak to them.  She is 74 and lives all the way across the country in Connecticut.  :'(

It's hard to put a good spin on this one, but I will say "thank God she has you".

Please keep us updated on her condition, OK?  We are here to help her in any way we can.

such awful news.. And made worse because you know the road it leads to :(  ... I do hope they're at the beginnings of failing, and mabie she can hold on to whats left.  I send prayers for comfort and hopfully it wont be as bad as shes thinking...    :grouphug;

My father was given the same vague directions a few years ago.  His creatinine was in the 2's (worse than mine at the time)  and then it came back down into the normal range on it's own.  The spike could have been med induced.  The man is on so many different meds for other ailments...  He is lso 82 years old.  He did end up seeing my neph and continues to see him once every 6 months as a precautionary measure.

Hopefully things aren't in the red zone for your rmom as of yet.  I hate it when Dr.s give such directions and don't share "numbers" with patients.  Her Dr. should have at least told her what her creatinine level was and what it meant. 

In any case, she is lucky to have you to advocate for her.  Most of us go into this without a clue and do not have someone we trust to help us make important decisions.   I am sorry she has to deal with this.

Admin for IHateDialysis 2008 - 2014, retired.
Jenna is our daughter, bad bladder damaged her kidneys.
Was on in-center hemodialysis 2003-2007.
7 yr transplant lost due to rejection.
She did PD Sept. 2013 - July 2017

I'm so sorry to hear this, Marc... As someone caring for my own mum in this situation, I know what a struggle it is...

I hope it turns out to less serious that you think....

I do hope the doctor is just overreacting to a normal, age-related decline in function. Many years ago my father-in-law was referred to a nephrologist for 'failing kidneys'. I got hold of his labs and turned green with envy when I saw his numbers; they were a lot better than mine! It turned out there was nothing wrong at all, just that he was 77 and that was all.

It is a good thing she's got you. And you've got us.

Pyelonephritis (began at 8 mos old)
Home haemo 1980-1985 (self-cannulated with 15 gauge sharps)
Cadaveric transplant 1985
New upper-arm fistula April 2008
Uldall-Cook catheter inserted May 2008
Haemo-dialysis, self care unit June 2008
(2 1/2 hours X 5 weekly)
Self-cannulated, 15 gauge blunts, buttonholes.
Living donor transplant (sister-in law Kathy) Feb. 2009
First failed kidney transplant removed Apr.  2009
Second trx doing great so far...all lab values in normal ranges

Sorry to hear this about your mother!  At least she has you to help guide her.

Well, Marc, if it is bad, what are you going to be able to do for her? How old is your Mom, and can she take care of herself otherwise. Wow, what a quandary. First instinct is to get in a plane and go and get her, isn't it? Hope things get better for you.

Born with autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease
1995 - AV Fistula placed
Dec 7, 1999 cadaver transplant saved me from childhood dialysis!
10 transplant years = spleenectomy, gall bladder removed, liver biopsy, bone marrow aspiration.
July 27, 2010 Started dialysis for the first time ever.
June 21, 2011 2nd kidney nonrelated living donor
September 2013 Liver Cancer tumor.
October 2013 Ablation of liver tumor.
Now scans every 3 months to watch for new tumors.
Now Status 7 on the wait list for a liver.
How about another decade of solid health?

May 13, 2009, went to urgent care with shortness of breath
May 19, 2009, went to doctor for severe nausea
May 20, 2009, admited to hospital for kidney failure
May 20, 2009, started dialysis with a groin cath
May 25, 2009, permacath was placed
august 24, 2009, was suppose to have access placement but instead was admited to hospital for low potassium
august 25, 2009, access placement
January 16, 2010 thrombectomy was done on access

Okay...She saw the Neph.  Her creatinine is 1.3 which is just over the 1.22 high end.  The neph explained to my mother that she still has 40% function and if she followed the renal diet that she could most likely avoid dialysis.  It was important that my mother saw the neph but the PCP really scared the heck out of us.  I think this is great news. It just so happens that on Monday my center had a bingo game and when I won I picked out a very nice renal cookbook.  I mailed it to her yesterday.

There is a lot of discussion in the "renal community" about whether or not reduced kidney function in older people is as serious an issue as it is in younger people.  Many older people just seem to not suffer the same consequences, so maybe this is the case for your mother.  But yes, this is great news!
