Anyone else have this? I know I am on PD, but anyone else out there on PD have low blood potassium? I now have to take potassium supplements. I eat so much salsa and fries, etc.

when i was on pd, they said some people will need potassium supplements, sounds like your membrane is a fast membrane (able to remove toxins out fast).

I only had low k once on hemo and my hart didn't like it. It was a result of being too careful with my diet, and if you can imagine when I first found out I had kidney failure I had low k in the hospital, too.

That is actually hard to believe. My K was high before dialysis.
Another reason why I choose PD so I could eat more potassium foods

my husband has low potassium, after his bloods have been taken the nurse will ring and tell him to have bananas. Having low potassium is also bad for your heart and with his heart not being good it is a worry.

Bananas and OJ are high in potassium. I would think if you were to eat some of those, your levels would raise.

I had high potassium just before I went on dialysis.  I was drinking lots of carrot juice (love it), and that is loaded with potassium.  I also liked bananas and avocados and dark chocolate.  I thought those things were healthy!  LOL.  Now, my potassium is on the low side, but okay, because I am careful with my diet.  I got the thumbs up for my first labs from my nutritionist.

Carrot juice is loaded with potassium.  I loved it, but gave it up once my kidney became unemployed.

After my first full month on pd, my phos, potasium and protien were all low. Now I am trying to get everthing to balance out. Might be harder than I thought but at least I can put some of the things back in my diet I took out.

you have got to remember you are constantly getting a treatments on PD, its not like lets say hemo (in-center like what I was on  :puke;) so like my nurse told me its not uncommon to run into this problem, so you may have to take supplements in the event that your diet does not supplement what you are eating.....

I say....... start eating even more banana's, potatoes, tomatoes, oh my  :cheer:
