The initial drain last night was reddish. I figured peritonitis. Left a message for the neph. Explained the sysmtoms. Took off for ER. I had just been admitted when he called back. Told me I didn't have peritonitis and should leave ER. I did. All the drains have been clear since.
How the heck did he know it wasn't peritonitis? I mean it could have been.

It was explained to me that some red in the drain is normal. A darker red is another story. This is what was told to me during my training.

Initial drain being reddish can often just be residual iodine from your cap. Don't panic if it eventually turns colorless because then all the iodine was washed off.

I ended up talking more to my neph. He explained that I probably strained and had some bleeding from the cath. He indicted that it only takes one drop of blood to turn the whole drain reddish. Woosh. What a relief that it was not peritonotis.......

That is so good that you acted quickly, you did the right thing and Ok your neph said it was just straining and bleeding from your cath. Do not let this put you off going to ER if you think the color is not right. Peritonitis is a terrible thing and the sooner you act the quicker it gets sorted. You did the right thing.

Atooraya - how long have you been doing PD?
I had 1 bag that was cloudy bag and I panicked. Called my D nurse and she walked me right through everything. Come to find out it wasn't Peritonitis...thank the good Lord, it was white blood cells. Never found out why but no more cloudy bags. Glad you acted quickly...I've only heard bad things about Peritonitis.

I am a PD newbie, only since July but I get really red bags when I am ovualting and I also get red ones once I get my period, throw some heparin in the bag just to be on the safe side when this happens (after talking to the nurse to Neph first of course)

good luck!!!

Hi tbarrett

Thanks for the heads up. Luckily I don't suffer from periods. A side effect of being a man.
