Hi, I found this site while I was searching the web for information on Dalysis.  I am a Registered Nurse, I currently work in Psychiatry and have been considering working in a Dialysis Unit closer to my home.  I wiould like some advice.  The people in this forum seem wonderful. Please feel free to comment!

Hi Terry!
Working in a Dialysis Center is a tough, exhausting job.  But it can be very rewarding at the same time!

If you can, try a hospital setting first, because they usually have better staffing/patient ratios.

No transplant.  Not yet, anyway.  Only decided to be listed on 11/9/06. Inactive at the moment.  ;)
I make films.

Just the facts: 70.0 kgs. (about 154 lbs.)
Treatment: Tue-Thur-Sat   5.5 hours, 2x/wk, 6 hours, 1x/wk
Dialysate flow (Qd)=600;  Blood pump speed(Qb)=315
Fresenius Optiflux-180 filter--without reuse
Fresenius 2008T dialysis machine
My KDOQI Nutrition (+/ -):  2,450 Calories, 84 grams Protein/day.

Welcome Terry, good to have you aboard. As Zach said, dialysis is tough. You have to be stern with some patients, yet caring at the same time. I think it would be hard to get to know patients on a personal level, then seeing things happen to them, or even death. If you feel you can handle things such as these, by all means, go for it. Again, welcome

Thank you for your replies.  What do you consider a good staff/pt ratio ? The center that
I am considering is run by the Hospital that I already work for but at another location closer to my home.

1 Patient care staff member to 4 patients is about right.  It also depends on how many seriously ill patients are part of that mix.

Hi Terry, and welcome to our site.

Being a Dialysis nurse doesn't look that hard to me.  You go around and listen to everybody's heart to make sure it is still pounding and you check ankles for puffiness.  BIG DEAL!   I'm sure you will do fine.  I'm not sure you get paid very well.  Check that out. 

On this site you will find that people speak what is on their minds.

Welcome to our community.  You have made a very important step by communicating with us here.  You will find out what dialysis patients really go through, and I know this will make you a more caring and aware dialysis nurse.  Sometimes we need a bit more than just correct procedure.  I really appreciate you taking out the time to contact us and I look forward to hearing your progress.

Admin for IHateDialysis 2008 - 2014, retired.
Jenna is our daughter, bad bladder damaged her kidneys.
Was on in-center hemodialysis 2003-2007.
7 yr transplant lost due to rejection.
She did PD Sept. 2013 - July 2017

Welcome Terry, glad you've joined!  I'm on PD, and the clinic that I go to (usually only once a month now that I'm established on dialysis) has one nurse, one tech, and thirteen patients.  My nurse is great, and when I'm there I feel like I have her full attention.  I think being a dialysis nurse could be hard, some people are very upset about being on dialysis and it could be hard to deal with them.  But, I have to say, nurses already put up with a lot of sick people, so it's probably not worse than that!
