2nd Attempt at PD

Well Its been 2 months since my first PD cath was removed and this past wednesday I went under the knife again and had a new PD catheter placed. I have to be honest, I was/am very nervous about it since my first experience was so negative. But I am trying to think the best and really look forward to PD once everything works out.

This time its a bit different though (which may be good). The first time around I didnt reallyt have a lot of pain after surgery and had minimal drainage. The surgeon put catheter on the left side this time and I have to say I am VERY sore and have alot of drainage. I have been reinforcing my dressing as they indicated on my discharge orders but I seep through all the gauze and onto my clothing  I left a message for the doctor just to make sure this is normal. I honestly will be devastated if the PD cath fails again.

Good luck and stick with it. When I had to go back on PD I ended up with a tunnel infection (Lazy nurse) and had to get the PD cath replaced. After I got that all straightened out....it was OK.

Did they ever tell you why the first attempt didnt work??

After my surgery i was told not to touch the dressing for three days.  The nurse took off the dressing the first time.  I had no discharge well minimal on the dressing.  So if your getting so much discharge that it is getting your clothes messy i hope the nurse has an answer for you.

They never did give me a good explanation why it never worked the first time around. I just know whenever they tried to flush it, there was resistance and I would get severe cramping and high fevers. Later they said it was peritonitis and had it removed.

After Surgery on Wednesday I was vomiting quite a bit (probably from anesthesia) so I wonder if the straining agitated my exit site causing all this drainage. The PD Nurse called today and told me that I will need to change the dressing if its saturated. Guess its no good having everything sitting in all that moisture. What a nightmare that was! First I was paranoid about keeping everything sterile and It looked pretty gory under the dressing (Alot of clotting too). This was all centered around the tubing and exit site which is alarming to me since the first time I had minimal drainage. I just covered it with dry sterile gauze and then tomorrow she will look at it.

Despite all that I would prefer for the wound to drain than all the excess blood to collect under the skin.

I had a PD Cath put in Jan 3rd and it was removed this past Sunday because of infection and on my first weekend doing PD at home it started leaking effluent.

I am now doing in-center Hemo with an Ash Cath and a living room full of 50 boxes of stuff I don't need.

I'm finding the removal worse than the implanting was...I am so sore!!

You really should be checked and a sample collected to be sure you don't have the beginning of a bacterial infection...don't fret, that is not all that uncommon and is usually easily cured..I was unlucky. If you aren't in increasing pain or fevered then it could just be something simple and as you say, it's better to drain it out than have it fester inside!!
