Hi..so glad I found you all! My 80.5 year old diabetic mom is being told she needs to start dialysis.

 Last month her creatinine level was around 4.5.  This past Friday morning she went in for blood work.  That afternoon the doctor called my sister to tell her the results went up to around 7 and she needed to bring my mom to the E.R.  She has since been admitted and they are stablizing her BP & sugar. At this time her level has  gone done to 6.

Up until now my mom has been avoiding getting the fistula- I think she was in denial that it could get to this point.  Anyway....she has pretty much agreed to get that done, but right now the doctor is pushing to get a jugular cath put in to dialysize (sp?) her a few times before she is released.  I will post my questions and concerns on the forum.  Thanking you in advance for your help & support!

Hi Dpatnfl, and welcome to IHD.  I'm so glad you found us.  So, your 80+ Mom needs dialysis.    She probably needs a permacath to dialyze until she can get a fistula or graft in her arm.  There are different things that should be talked about before they just dig in.  We will probably answer that with your question on the forum.

Born with autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease
1995 - AV Fistula placed
Dec 7, 1999 cadaver transplant saved me from childhood dialysis!
10 transplant years = spleenectomy, gall bladder removed, liver biopsy, bone marrow aspiration.
July 27, 2010 Started dialysis for the first time ever.
June 21, 2011 2nd kidney nonrelated living donor
September 2013 Liver Cancer tumor.
October 2013 Ablation of liver tumor.
Now scans every 3 months to watch for new tumors.
Now Status 7 on the wait list for a liver.
How about another decade of solid health?

Diagnosed with Polycystic Kidney Disease at age 19.
Renal Failure at age 38 (2010) came about 2 hrs close to dying. Central line put in an emergency.
Began dialysis on Aug 15, 2010.
Creatine @ time of dialysis: 27. I almost died.
History of High Blood Pressure
I have Neuropathy and Plantar Fasciitis in My Feet
AV Fistula created in Nov. 2011, still buzzing well!
Transplanted in April, 2013. My husband and I participated in the Living Donor paired exchange program. I nicknamed my kidney "April"
Married 18 yrs,  Mom to 3 kids to twin daughters (One that has PKD)  and a high-functioning Autistic son

Your mom sounds like my mom. I even wrote a paper about my mom and how she put off getting her access (posted on this site). Mom was 75 when she started dialysis. She is doing well, of course, there will be bumps in the road, but support will really help!
