A look back at the impact of Hurricane Katrina on the dialysis community

9/2/2010

This past week, the nation marked the fifth anniversary of the devastating impact of Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans. The storm wrecked havoc on the city, leaving lives lost and billions of dollars in property damage.  The anniversary on Aug. 27 was marked by news reports on progress made in rebuilding the city, but also on what still needs to be done.

The storm also had an impact on dialysis patients in the region. The renal community worked together amid many obstacles, including power outages and flooding, to get dialysis to those who needed it.  Not long after the hurricane, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid  Services and other federal agencies created the Kidney Community Emergency Response Coalition, which is now the leading authority on emergency preparedness and response for the kidney community.

Click here to read our coverage of the storm and the renal community's response from the October 2005 issue of NN&I. http://www.nephronline.com/uploaded/nni%202005%20revised%209-2-10.pdf
