10 Year Survivor

« on: July 25, 2010, 09:23:03 AM »

Hello, fellow survivors! My name is Bill. I am 50 yrs old and have been a renal patient for 8 years now. I was very ill when I was diagnosed with ESRD. I didn't know I was sick, I just thought I was getting badly out of shape for getting short-of-breath while trying to do, well,  anything. After two delirious weeks in ICU and emergency dialysis, my brain function returned and I knew where I was finally. I am on in-center hemodialysis and am beginning training for At-Home Nocturnal Hemo. I will be using a simplified version of the Fresenius 2008K machine.

During my tour of duty I've had two permacath lines, two failed fistulas and one infected graft. I now have a new graft that works very well. Oh, I've been on the transplant list for 2 years now. I count myself lucky that I have the energy to work full-time and still do three 5 hour dialysis sessions a week.

Hope to chat with you all soon.

Hi Bill:

I'm Jeff. I am in  my early 50s, living in Calgary. Had kidney failure 4 years ago.
Now on home hemo with the Bellco machine using a fistula.
Had previous problems with hemo using a catheter and pd.
Had a fistula in March and started hemo training in May.
Having a big problem with one of my buttonholes in the upper arm.
When I or the nurses put the needle in, my arm spasms causing the tunnel to move and often to collapse.
I am going to start a post about this in the home hemo page.
You sound like you have had many problems too with dialysis.
Feel free to reply.
