Hello all, my name's Emy, I'm from the Philippines. My 8 year old son Rae is on peritoneal dialysis for almost 7 weeks now. It's been hard for us because Rae is very active and now he is tied to his PD. He was infected by a deadly dengue virus, was rushed to the ICU, stayed there for 3 weeks. His internal organs were affected but are okay now except for his kidneys. He was out of the hospital after 32 days, after a week, went back to the hospital for another 3 days steroid treatment. He is on every-other-day oral steroid now plus ketosteril and other load of vitamins.

I need help with his diet. Rae's on low-sodium, low-protein, low-potassium, low-fat diet. This food just seems impossible to find! I hope you can help me with kidney-friendly recipes, many thanks!

Mabuhay, Emy! Dialysis is a hard adjustment, especially for a child.

When Rae went on dialysis, didn't the dietitian talk to you about his food requirements/recipes? I don't think we are allowed to post outside links here, but you can Google for "renal recipes".

Welcome again, and hope you post often.

Emy:

The Kidney Foundation of Canada has a dietitian's blog with lots of information and recipes.

The website is:    www.kidney.ca/Page.aspx?pid=859

Best wishes for you and your son.     :cuddle;

Hi Emy and welcome to IHD.  It must be so hard watching your son on dialysis.  Do you have a blender?  I would put apples in and chop them up.  They are pretty low in potassium.  Cottage cheese?  We have a diet and recipe part to this site.  You might read through that.

Best of luck and I hope this site can help you.

 :welcomesign; To IHD. It is a hard adjustment to this life for adults, wow it must be very hard to keep him busy all that time. What do you do to keep him busy & still for that long? As an artist I know I can keep my Grand children busy with acrilic paints, water color, glitter, stick on jewels or a mirror & some face paints.

Thank you all!
I have consulted a dietitian yesterday and it's so hard to believe my son is only allowed 20g of protein everyday. He lost weight while in the hospital (no food for three weeks!) and is now down to 17kls. He craves for food, he is a big eater. I'll check the sites you recommended, thanks very much. Rae is a good child, he cooperates with us and even tell us not to make his food salty. I think he has adjusted to low to nothing sodium food.

He is so bored but seldom complains. To keep himself busy, he watches TV, play PSP, draws, play computer games.
