Imprisoned asbestos contractor seeks time off to donate kidney

Associated Press - May 29, 2010 3:15 AM ET

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - A former asbestos contractor who's serving 25 years in federal prison for environmental crimes wants a furlough to donate a kidney to his 9-year-old son.

Forty-3-year-old Alexander Salvagno of Albany made the request this week to U.S. District Court Judge Lawrence Kahn, who hasn't made a ruling yet.

Salvagno's son was born with numerous medical problems including kidney failure, and his doctors say he now needs a transplant.

Salvagno and his father were sentenced in August 2006 after they and others were convicted of asbestos fraud related to more than 1,500 projects. The Salvagnos received the longest prison sentences on record in the U.S. for environmental crimes.

Their crimes included setting up a bogus testing lab that falsified 75,000 tests for projects that included removing asbestos from schools, churches, hospitals, banks and a nuclear power plant.

Hmmm - let's not punish the kid - but no running around having fun for the dad, either.  Out to run tests, back in until surgery, out for surgery and back to jail.  If they let him out, though, they'll probably have to do an ankle bracelet and house arrest since they won't be able to afford the over time for a guard.
