Hi....So glad to find this site. I've been on hemo for 5 years. My kidneys shut down due to massive infection and was in coma for 12 days.  The drs. told me --Good news is you're alive. Bad new is your kidneys died. They sent me home saying my kidney function might improve over time. i was totally ignorant of anything about the kidneys and was still really sick. Less than 3 months later (and on my 50th birthday) I was back in hospital with congestive heart failure due to fluid overload. I have been on hemo since then and had nephrectomy in Jan. 09. My remaining kidney is in pretty lousy shape and will probably have to be removed when I have my next infection. I try to be well informed now of everything "kidney." My labs are usually good. I have difficulty keeping my protein levels up, because I really would like to be vegan, but my dialysis dietician says you can't be vegetarian/vegan when you're on dialysis. I'm also a true Diet Coke junkie and used to drink at least 12 cans each day. Thirst can drive me crazy! Sorry to ramble on......Kamar55

Welcome to our community!  That was not a ramble- that was a good intro so that your new family members can get to know you   :grouphug; .  Sorry, but the Coke is no go.  Too full of phosphorus.  It is so clear when you read the ingredients - no need to work it out.  It says 'phosphoric acid'!!!  It is always great to keep informed.  Our buzzword here is "Knowledge is Power!"  So keep reading and keep posting please.  Let us know how you are doing.

Hello Kam and welcome to IHD.  Yes, dialysis sucks protein out as well as the bad stuff so we have to be on a high protein diet.  I'm so glad you found us and am looking foreward to your posts.

Hello!! Welcome to the site Kam.  I'm with you on the cola.  Mine was Caffeine free Diet Pepsi though.  I have kicked the habit though.  Only have it once in a great while now. It does make a difference.
