My introduction

Hey everyone!
My name is Caroline and I'm 25. I have been on dialysis now since March 8th. I do Nxstage at home 5 days a week. I was born with only one kidney and had bladder issues too. I had kidney infections from the time that I was 2 and I have known for most of my adult life that I would need to eventually go on dialysis or have a transplant. I knew I wanted to do home dialysis cause I am a busy person....I work a week and I have a fairly hectic schedule so I knew I would hate going to a center. Plus my neph knows how anal I am about my health care so he was able to put me at the top of the list to start. I was the 3rd person to be trained on Nxstage in my clinic....I was in training for 5 weeks cause my fistula was very troublesome. MY second day of training my venous blew and my arm from my elbow almost up to my shoulder turned black and blue. It was great fun! But thankfully that is all over now! I do all my treatments by myself from start to finish so it gets to be a little much at times but I will survive! I am not at all interested in a transplant at the moment because I don't want the medicine that goes along with it. My training nurse and my neph are sure that I will change my mind lol we will see! Anyways, I joined the forum because I really don't have anyone who understands what being on dialysis involves. My friends and family try but they just don't get it so I need some people to whine to who will actually understand what I am talking about! I will try not to complain too much lol. I look forward to getting to know you all! I have been reading the forums for a while and you guys seem very close-knit, more so than any of the other forums that I have read. Okay that is all the time I have for now...gotta go unhook!

Hi Caroline and welcome to IHD.
It sounds like you have a great attitude and that sure goes a long way in dealing with the "Big D". Glad to have you de-lurk and join our gang and I'm looking forward to reading your posts.

Oh, sweet Caroline
Good times never seem so good
OK OK, enough of that.
Hey, welcome to IHD!! It's pretty great that you're doing home hemo all by yourself after only a couple of months - that's really something to be proud of (as much as you can in this kidney disease world). It's great you found us and I'm sure you can add to our community with some real insight from your own situation.

Caroline and congratulations on taking charge of your treatments the way you have. That was the key for me also and I started on dialysis at 26. I'm now 56 and just started on my second transplant (Feb. 09). I did 5 years of hemo at the start and then had a first cadaver transplant that served me really well for 23 years.
I'm glad you joined us here and hope that you'll post often with your experiences and of course questions as they arise.
