The first hint I had a kidney problem was discovered 15 years ago when excessive protein was found in my urine during a routine physical exam.  Over the 15 years I was closely monitored as my creatinine crept up to the point were I started to feel rotten.

I finally started on dialysis 5 months ago (CAPD).  Last month I converted to CCPD using the Fresenius Newton IQ cycler.  I strongly prefer the cycler since it allows my days to be free. 

I am rather tired much of the time and have a poor appetite.  I am wondering if these symptoms will ever improve.

Hi Bobmar37, Welcome to not only the greatest website regarding this matter but what i believe is the best support group as well.  You will find alot of info here and i am sure you have info to share with us as well.  Looking forward to hearing more from you  :2thumbsup;

Uninterrupted in-center (self-care) hemodialysis since 1982 -- 34 YEARS on March 3, 2016 !!

No transplant.  Not yet, anyway.  Only decided to be listed on 11/9/06. Inactive at the moment.  ;)
I make films.

Just the facts: 70.0 kgs. (about 154 lbs.)
Treatment: Tue-Thur-Sat   5.5 hours, 2x/wk, 6 hours, 1x/wk
Dialysate flow (Qd)=600;  Blood pump speed(Qb)=315
Fresenius Optiflux-180 filter--without reuse
Fresenius 2008T dialysis machine
My KDOQI Nutrition (+/ -):  2,450 Calories, 84 grams Protein/day.

 :welcomesign; Welcome Bobmar!  Glad to have you join our community.  Are you on any epogen or aranesp injections for anemia?  Do you take your binders faithfully and are you on any stomach acid reducer?   Have faith that those things WILL improve with time, all change takes time...    ;)   Glad you switched to the cycler.  I am on Baxter and prefer it to Fresenius.    :thumbup;  Anja

Welcome to our community.  First of all let me say that it will get better.  I believe that when you begin dialysis (any kind) it takes your body a little while to get accustomed to this new cycle.  After a time, things will work out, and you should be feeling better. That is how it is with me.   When I first started (in centre haemo) I felt drained after every session.   All I was able to do was get into my bed. My day was finished.  Now, I don't feel that way and do lots of things after my sessions.

Welcome! 

Like others have said, you're body is still getting used to the new routine.  In general, you can expect continuous improvement for at least the first 6 months after you start dialysis; after that it tends to level out.  However, I would definitely mention this to your doctor; maybe your meds need to be adjusted.  Also, your dietician should be able to help with the poor appetite.

Welcome Bobmar...I was very fatigued before I started HD. Now that I get Epogen 2x a week and venafer (liquid iron) shots once a week, I never feel tired during the day anymore! Give it some time, but also let your Dr. know what's going on so maybe adjustments can be made. Hang in there!

Hi Bobmar,
My husband is now going into his eighth month on in center HD 7:00 am to 11'00 am & I can see a big difference from when he first started. He used to come home feeling lousy & go right to bed for a nap, now he comes home & eats lunch.

Talk to your doctor if things don't start turning around for you pretty soon.
