Hi everyone, just a quick question.

After a nightmare 4 months on the machine at night I have changed to manual bags.

Was a bit stressed about the idea of doing 4 a day and so nurse said she would start me on 3 bags a day. Have been doing one at 7am, one at 4pm and one around 9.39-10pm. I had my blood results yesterday and she said for now they are ok and I can keep doing just the 3 bags a day. I know the fluid is prob staying in too long cos I put in 1500 and usually get 1.2 out.

Just wondering if anyone else does 3 bags a day rather than 4?

Hate the idea of also doing another one at school (only get half hr lunch and I just feel like it would take over the day (at the momnet I get to forget about dialysis while I'm at work)

Would love to hear if anyone one else gets enough dialysis on 3 bags???

Love to everyone

Hi Lou....

Mum does three bags a day... Just had the results of her PET, and her blood work... Everything's going very well...

She was originally on Haemo... Then onto four bags PD per day... Then the plan was to put her onto the machine... Sadly, it did'nt work for her... She gained a kilo and a half of fluid onto her on one overnight treatment...They reduced her to three manual exchanges per day...

Are you on Baxter???... Mum uses a yellow bag in the morning at about eight am, a green bag at about two-thirty pm, and a purple bag at about eight pm...

Hope the manual exchanges are the solution to your difficulties...

God bless...

Hi Darth, thanks you have given me hope!!

I am on Baxter. Doing 2 yellow bags and then a purple one at night.  Can you leave the green bag in longer? Maybe I will ask my nurse about it. Compared to the machine these bags are amazing - just really don't want to do 4 of them!

Great to hear your mum is doing well on them.

Hi Lou....

Mum was on three yellow and one purple...

Neph said to try one of each a day, and it's working well...

If you're feeling okay, I really wouldn't worry about how many you're doing.... If a problem develops, your bloods will flag it up pretty quickly... Just enjoy the good things about it, and worry about the bad only if you have to!.... But if they suggest a third yellow, ask if you could switch to a green instead!...

I'm really pleased that this is working better for you....

God bless, and stay well...

I went from 4 bags a day to 5 and then to 6 before I finally went on the cycler.  Much better.  Leaves me free all day.  Love it.  You're right, the fluid is staying in too long (if it's yellow, green or red).  After 6 hours the body begins to reabsorb everything you just took out.  I'm really surprised they are letting you go that long.  Every body is different, though, so I guess you can handle it.  The only bag that has a 12-15 hour dwell is Extraneal (the hot pink, what they call purple).  Good luck to you.

I started with 4 bags, but had to go to 5 and then even that wasn't enough so went to the cycler.  If you do 4, one of them would be at about 5pm - are you still at school then?  When I did 4 it was 7m, 12, 5, 10pm.  I didn't really count the 7am and 10pm ones - I kind of saw it as doing two bags a day - if that makes sense?
Have you asked about using 2l bags instead of 1500?  Or maybe 2l during the day, and 1500 at night or something?
The colour of the bag - green yellow etc only indicates how much fluid that bag will tak off you - it doesn't make any differece to the amount of dialysis.  So increasing the amount of fluid in you will increase your dialysis - not changing to a green.

Also to be factored in is your rate of transport.

I did a test on manual bags one weekend, and they said I was a slow transporter, meaning that longer dwells of about 4-6 hours with manual are ideal. I, too, teach, and so an exchange in the middle of the day would be difficult, if not downright impossible.

So, I'm on the cycler at night with 4 dwells of almost 2 hours, then a last fill of 1500 ml which stays in all day.

When I first started the daytime dwell, I got UF's of 4-500. Now I seem to be reabsorbing (taking off 1250 at night for my initial drain). I'm going to talk to the PD nurse about this - maybe I need to drain when I get home at 3 or so.

I did manual on vacation a short time ago and with the UF, 2000ml turned into almost 3000ml! That's a lot to walk around with!
