I'm just wondering if anyone on dialysis has a sever constipation problem as I do. I take so much laxatives that I'm sure my bowls don't work on their own. I'm waiting to see a specialist for this and have had many tests. I'm at the point I don't know what to eat anymore to make me go. Does anyone have any advice for me?

No, I have just the opposite problem.  But, I may have some advice as I use to have constipation problems.  There is a tea called "Smooth Move" you don't even need to drink a whole cup.  Just drink a cup at night and don't plan on going anywhere in the morning too early!!

i take colace. the dr said i could take several a day but it has turned out that i only need one. occasionally i take 2, one in the morning and one at night. you can get it at your local grocery. the name brand is rather expensive but safeway has a generic equivalent for less than $5. i also eat pineapple.

I've tried colace...6 per day and nothing...I was on lactulose and that worked for awhile then nothing. I'm now on Miralax, 34 mgs and 6 dulcolax and only go a little. I get severe intestinal spams that bring me down on my knees. I've swallowed radioactive pills and had exrays 6 days later. The pills had hardly moved. Now I'm waiting to see a specialist. I feel like I've become a laxative pill myself. I will see about getting the smooth move Rerun spoke of.  ??? Where do  you get it Rerun?

Here in the UK you can get a herbal remedy called 'Senna' It's available on prescription or non prescription and surprise surprise it's a standard NHS treatment so it's actually part of my clinic prescribed treatment. Whoever heard of the medical profession actually acknowledging a non pharmacutical product?! I take two in the morning and two at night and also 2 sodium docusate capsules at night. They seem to work resonably well.

I've been diagnosed with delayed intestinal movement. I swallowed radioactive capsuls and took x-rays. Six days later I retook x-rays and the capsuls had hardly moved. I have hemochromatosis which means my body doesn't utilize iron. For the past 5 years I've been given iron shots in dialysis. Now I have a huge iron over load which is being stored in my liver. After dialysis they don't return my blood but discard it. This is to get rid of the iron overload. Balanced diet or not, my intestines don't move so I'm stuck with the laxatives. I was told today that I will have this problem all my life and will be dependant on the laxatives. Colonoscopy in two weeks to rule out any obstructions. My labs are always perfect so obviously I'm doing something right. I've held the same weight of 110 lbs for the past 8 years....go figure. What I need is something gentle to flush my intestines out. I'm up to any subjections.

I know i have mentioned this in the past but hopefully this will help someone else with this "problem" ;)   I warm up about 1/2 - 1 cup, depending on how i am feeling, of prune juice and then wash it down with about 1/2 - 1 cup of warm water, that usually works for me within a couple of hours.  Hope you find resolution soon, i know how miserable you must feel when you just cant go  ::) ;)
