I have to have something done to get my bladder(I have a mild form of spina bifida) "fixed" before they're put me as active on the list. There were four options. one, do nothing. two, take medicine. three, have botox injected, so my bladder holds more, or something. and four-have major surgery on my bladder.

They don't think the medicine would work, and they would rather not do the major surgery. So they said I should shoot for the botox injections. But the problem is that insurance rejects like 95% percent of claims. And they won't let me pay out of pocket, because it's 7000 dollars a treatment, and I would need it done every 3 or 6 months (I don't remember how often) if it works.

Well, we just got the call today, and the insurance will cover it!!!  I have to get the first one done before december 1st though. I'm going to tell my center tomorrow when I go for dialysis!

Brianna, that is very good news! Hope everything goes well for you! I am waiting to hear from the transplant team here at my hospital about my referral for a transplant. I'm not on the list yet,because with my insurance there was a waiting period before they would pay.I wish you the best of luck!

That is great news and it makes a lot of sense.  Why not try and correct the problem so you at least have a chance at a transplant.  In the long run, I'm sure it would more "cost effective" for the insurance company.  Instead of paying for dialysis the rest of your life, you now at least have a chance for a transplant.

I don't know if you lost hope of ever getting a transplant, but now there is a light at the end of tunnel.  Best of luck to you!!

Brianna.......  good for you .......  I am sure all will turn out well.....   You have had some problems with your fistula  and sounds like you have those resolved....and this will be resolved to...... go get that Transplant...........

I went through a similar situation this summer with the insurance company.  It took awhile, but they did approve the treatments I was looking for.  It helped when I talked to a real person myself.   I am so glad for your news.       We all like to hear the positive things that are happening     Keep us updated and good luck.

Our daughter had the surgery to make her bladder bigger (so it would have more volume and less pressure) and it worked out great. She has a non-neurogenic neurogenic bladder (meaning it works like a bladder in someone with spinal injuries.) They required she get this surgery to be eligible for a transplant, as her bladder would have damaged a new kidney. She has to self-cath 4 times a day but she has adapted to that, and it's all worked out well.
