Would taking a diuretic an hour before dialysis help put the fluid in your blood stream to be taken off. I have NO kidney function, but I have always wonder if taking a diuretic would help in dialysis.

My point exactly. Diuretics pull fluid into the blood so the kidneys can get rid of it.
So, they would still pull fluid into the blood and the machine could get rid of it. Otherwise it starts pulling it across the tissue and you cramp. Maybe I have the mechanics of diuretics wrong?

Rerun, It's the other way around. Diuretics increases urine production by the kidneys, and as fluid is removed from the blood new fluid is pulled from the tissues into the blood. When I started dialysis I still made about a cup of urine a day and tried diuretics. No avail.  The only way to pull more fluid by the machine without cramps is by finding the optimal balance between the UFR, sodium and UF profiling. In addition, dry run can be used in extreme cases (dialysis w/o dialysate flow, doesn't change toxin and electrolyte concentration). Gil |

I was reading an article a while ago... someone is making exercise machines.. like steppers and stationary bike apparatus that can be used during dialysis.. the theory being that exercise of the legs will release more fluid.. from the legs... unfortunately for me.. I carry fluid around my waist..   (that's my story.. and I'm sticking to it!) lol  |

I have been to a dialysis center where they will give you a stationary bike thingy so you can exercise while you sit on dialysis. I asked my unit and they said it sounded like a good idea, but.... and nothing was heard since. We have a lot of older people who would not be interested in it. After they put the Benadryl in me I could care less about exercising while there!

I collect fluid in my abdominal area too. One of the doctors said its because Im young and have a good heart. I used to get a bit in my legs and ankles but now thats a rare occurence. I look like Im pregnant sometimes, but you get that |

I must collect alot of fluid in my stomach as well as there is always a roll (but I am pretty sure it is just fat) . My doc said there was no point of diuretics, just a waste of money. Have asked just recently and he said no. Liz  |

I was just asking my father(who has been on dialysis for 4 weeks now) why he was still taking his lasix. He still takes a huge amount 80mg morning and night. Don't know if he still pees. Haven't asked. But anyway that's a good question to ask his Doc today. Why he needs to still take those things...................Thanks for reminding me about them . |

If he still urinates then he would be on them to help get rid of extra fluid, rather than taking it off at dialysis. If he has only been on dialysis for 4 weeks then its likely he still does urinate.

Im on lasix too...Still go about 2 quarts a day. Ill tell you, nothing worse than having to go while hooked up, specially when the nurses are always WASHING the hands!!!!

Say, nothing worse than having to go( urinate) while you are still hooked up to the machine, while the nurses are always washing their hands. |

I used to have fluid in the legs and the solution was to wear T.E.D hose during treatment. Now my legs are much better and I no longer wear the T.E.D. hose. I still have some urine output. A couple weeks ago, I asked my dr. if lasix was still necessary as I no longer feel the same urgency as I used to. He responded by doubling the dose of lasix. The urgency or output volume didn't change much if at all.  |
