Introducing myself....Nan!

Hello fellow friends, my name is Nan...I am 56yrs old and live in Minneapolis Minnesota. I was diagnosed with Polycystic Kidney disease in 1993 and truly believed that I would die of a car crash before I had any kidney problems. But in May of 2006, I started getting so tired, that I spent like 18 hours in bed a day sleeping! Finding out from my doctor that my creatinine level had gone to 6.4.....hence...the exhaustion! Ended up in the hospital for a surgery for a catheter and started dialysis on June 1...2006. I have a incredible surrounding of family and friends...and seven amazing grandchildren, all of my family lives within blocks of me, so we gather together almost daily. I am on the National List for a transplant thru the University of Minnesota Hospital, where they did the first kidney transplant and continue to do them at a high rate. I am still kinda in shock over being in dialysis and having kidney failure. I sit in my center and wonder what the heck I am doing in this "Frankenstein Laboratory"?! I can't help but feel that dialysis has taken over my life.....everything is planned "around" it.
When I look at the pictures of the members of this site, I am amazed at how young everyone is....at my center, I am surrounded by the elderly. I am thrilled to find this site, I have told many others about it as I feel it is a great way to network our shared lives with. I look forward to sharing our stories together, I know I will gain more information and understanding from you, my fellow friends, than anywhere else! So glad to be aboard!

My husband has an uncle who owns a small farm about 45 minutes north of you. We went to the Fair in St Paul with them a couple of times -- wow, that place is huge.
Glad to have you here. You will love this group -- great source of support and information.

to our community. It is great to have you here. It is especially great for me to have someone my age on board. All of these young-uns here! Were you born in 1950, as I was? A friend of mine said that 1950 was the last year for good people!!
This is indeed the place to be. I cannot begin to tell you how I was helped by this site, which I found just before I started dialysis. So, read the posts, ask some questions of your own. Please don't be just a lurker - let us hear from you, and often!
Welcome again!

Hi Nan and welcome to our site. You will find a lot of information here. First of all I don't know WHAT doctor told you the first kidney transplant was performed in Minnesota! I believe it was in 1954 in Boston on the Herrick identical twins. Lots to read here, so sit back and have fun. Don't be discouraged, I too am in a clinic were they are all old. It can be depressing. I guess it would be more depressing to see all young people having to go through this with me.

Welcome Nan from another fellow TwinCitian. I have been on PD since Aug 2004. Almost had a transplant in July of this year but have no room for one so am now on hold on the list until I have at least one of my very large PKD kidneys removed. You will find this site very interesting and informative.

Hey Ginger.....I live in southwest Minneapolis ....right near Washburn High sch. Are you in Mpls or St Paul?....are you going thru the University of Minnesota?.....who is your transplant coordinator? Why did they not know "before" that your PK's were too large to handle anything else....we need to "network" girl!
