2008
   There were 631 organ and cornea transplants.
   301 of these were solid organ transplants broken down into the following:
o   Hearts: 20 adults & 2 adolescents
o   Heart/lung:  1 adult
o   Lungs:  8 adults
o   Livers: 20 adults, 2 adolescent & 7 paediatric
o   Simultaneous kidney/pancreas:  3 adults and 1 adolescent.  These transplants were all carried out in Johannesburg. 
o   Simultaneous kidney/liver: 1 paediatric
o   Kidneys:  220 adult, 8 adolescent & 8 paediatric of which:
   81 adult, 6 adolescent & 3 paediatric transplants were live related
   19 adult kidney transplants were non-related
   38% of kidney donors were related to the recipient
   282 adults, 32 adolescents & 16 children had their sight restored through a cornea transplant.

In South Africa in 2007:
   There were 688 organ and cornea transplants. 
   288 of these were solid organ transplants broken down into the following:
o   Hearts:  24 adults & 2 paediatric
o   Heart/lung:  0
o   Lungs:  7 adults
o   Livers: 24 adults, 2 adolescent & 9 paediatric
o   Simultaneous kidney/pancreas:  10 adults.  These transplants were all carried out in Johannesburg. 
o   Simultaneous kidney/liver: 1 paediatric
o   Kidneys:  195 adult, 7 adolescent & 7 paediatric of which:
   57 adult, 7 adolescent & 7 paediatric transplants were live related
   14 adult kidney transplants were non-related
   34% of kidney donors were related to the recipient
   356 adults, 29 adolescents & 15 children had their sight restored through a cornea transplant.

In South Africa in 2006:
   There were 829 organ and cornea transplants. 
   280 of these were solid organ transplants broken down into the following:
o   Hearts:  21 adults
o   Heart/lung:  0
o   Lungs:  5 adults
o   Livers: 16 adults & 6 paediatric
o   Simultaneous kidney/pancreas:  9 adults.  These transplants were all carried out in Johannesburg. 
o   Kidneys:  201 adult & 22 paediatric of which:
   72 adult & 8 paediatric transplants were live related
   11 adult kidney transplants were non-related
   36% of kidney donors were related to the recipient
   516 adults & 33 children had their sight restored through a cornea transplant. 
   Groote Schuur Hospital, which was where the first heart transplant took place in 1967, undertook 4 heart transplants in 2006. 

In South Africa in 2005:
   There were 1,084 organ and cornea transplants.
   285 of these were solid organ transplants broken down into the following:
o   Hearts:  27 adults
o   Heart/lung:  1 adult
o   Lungs:  3 adult & 1 paediatric
o   Livers:  10 adult & 4 paediatric
o   Simultaneous kidney/pancreas:  7 adult
o   Kidneys:  210 adult & 22 paediatric of which:
   65 adult & 7 paediatric transplants were live related
   12 adult kidney transplants were non-related
   31% of kidney donors were related to the recipient
   758 adults & 41 children had their sight restored through a cornea transplant.

In South Africa in 2004:
   There were 1,047 organ and cornea transplants.
   303 of these were solid organ transplants broken down into the following:
o   Hearts:  27 adult & 1 paediatric
o   Heart / lung:  2 adults
o   Lungs:  5 adults
o   Livers:  6 adult & 2 paediatric
o   Simultaneous kidney/pancreas:  8 adults
o   Kidneys:  229 adult & 23 paediatric of which:
   64 adult & 9 paediatric transplants were live related
   14 adult & 1 paediatric transplant were non-related
   29% of kidney donors were related to the recipient
   666 adults & 78 children had their sight restored through a cornea transplant.

Just posted this for some insite in the transplants done in SA.

Wow. so transplants are really decreasing. from 1047 in 2004 to 631 in 2008. not good  :(

Yes and cadaver transplant nearly non existant.
If you wait on a list in SA .... it's like a miracle if you get a kidney.

Live donor seems to be the way to go.

You would think that Cadaver kidneys and other organs would be easier to get. considering the murder and death rate in this country.
Not sure if this is true but apparently you must have your funds for the transplant all sorted out before you can go on the list?

yep,,,,,

I am on the list but I had a letter from my medical aid Discovery to confirm that they will pay for the medication after the op. And I have to pay the surgeon a R25000 dep because he charges more than medical aid rates.
