Hi Everyone.
My name is Robert and I'm 26. I've been on dialysis for 10 yrs. now. I was born with polycystic kidneys, well just the left one. Half of the left kidney was removed when I was 2 weeks old. The docs. told my parents I would live a normal life. (yeah right) When I was 14, we found out my right kidney was failing. At the age of 16 I finally started dialysis. I started on hemo. I was on hemo for 4 months then stared on peritoneal. I was on peritoneal for 9 yrs. Kept the same catheter too. After the 9 yrs. the peritoneal quit working. So I'm on hemo again and have been doing that this past yr.
Let me rewind a bit.....The first 4 yrs. I was on dialysis I rebelled. I wouldn't go to my appointments, skipped dialysis and wouldn't take my meds. Started drinking, doing drugs and skipping school. When I was 20...sigh...I found out I had osteoporosis. I was very sick, could hardly get around. I lost my job and friends. So my grandma came to the rescue and moved me out of Omaha and out to Ks. She gave me a 2nd chance. Doing much better, although I have lost a few inches.
I'm going to be taking the Transplant classes next month. Then I will be able to meet with the surgeon. I have done this several times the past 4-5 yrs., but then I get scared and back off. Hopefully this time I will go through with it.
I suppose that is all.
for reading and have a good day ! ! !

Hey Robert, Glad you found us and joined our "family" We all have something in common here, unfortuantely, it is dialysis, but we are all still learning and sharing stories and experiences that we have lived while on dialysis, we all know what you are going through. Some have been sick since an early age and they can help with any questions you may have, heck, any one of us can (hopefully) Well, just wanted to welcome you and let you know we are looking forward to hearing more from you

Hi Robert. I feel bad for kids having to deal with dialysis. It is bad enough as an adult. Welcome to the site. It will keep your mind occupied for hours. Chip in with your opinions, it proves for a good debate.

Welcome Robert! I was on dialysis the first time when I was 16 and I did quite a bit of rebelling as well and my parents kicked me out of the house when I was 18 and I have been on my own since then. It has been hard and friends don't always understand. Been through a lot! I wish you the best! We are always here for you when you need to talk! I know I have found that here!

Glad you're here, this a great group.
Do you have ARPKD, or early onset ADPKD? My husband and two of his adult children have ADPKD, and others here also have it. Have you been checked for the other PKD disorders? If not, that will be part of the transplant work up.
I hope you go for the transplant. Children and young people shouldn't have to deal with dialysis.
