How do you handle a 2000 bag of liquid? I can hardly breathe. Last night was the first night I tried sleeping with it in me and I slept about 3 hrs and woke up with a terrible back ache. I had to get up and drain. this is my first day going to work and I look like I am 8 mo pregnant. My question is do you ever fill with less than 2000mm? I hate to sound so whiny but I am so uncomfortable. Betty

Hi Betty , havent you just started on CAPD ? Whats your regime ? Yes 2000 bags are filling! ,but really when you are lay down at night they shouldnt be as bad, i think its just a case of getting used to it , which does take time. One thing thats not good though is draining it out before your dwell time is up! It means you are not getting enough dialysis. Are you on 2000 fills during the day ? I was always supposed to be on them when i was on CAPD but always put in 1800, not a lot of difference, but made it easier! Now i have just changed over to the cycler and im on 2000 at night and even after all these years i notice a difference (like im going to explode!) As for looking pregnant ..sorry thats going to stay , i think its one of the things we all hate about it ! I would ask if you can start on 1800 dwells and build up to 2000 as it is very hard to start with .

I just went home and drained and filled, I drained 2200 and I had put in 4.25- 2000 this morning. i then filled with 1500 2.5 just now and I don't feel as bad as I did with the 2000. No I don't look and feel uncomfortable after I drain.

I am doing 5 exchanges a day. The nurse said that since I cannot do the 2000 then I have to do 5 instead of 4. She said I could put in 1600 and do 5. Today was my first full day of filling and draining.

It can depend a lot on how tall you are. I'm lucky cos I'm 5 ft 7. Are you a bit shorter? It must be a lot harder for a shorter person. Also, I'm not a doctor so check anything I say, but don't worry if you try putting a bit less in for a bit till you get used to it. Once they got me to try 2.5 bags, and I was amazed at the difference. Couldn't breathe, so went back to 5 x times a day like you. It's way harder doing 5 though - takes up so much more time. Your body will adjust I promise. Thinking of you.

I hope that doing one extra exchange but with less fluid helps I have been doing dialysis for 5 yrs and still cannot take 2000 during the day , although i can manage it at night now , but i feel like im going to explode. ! You will get more used to the feeling after a little while and 1600 isnt so bad. Watch your appetite though , if found because i felt full of fluid i didnt really want to eat , so the best thing to do is eat little and often , rather than say 3 big meals .

Just take it one day at a time , it seems to take ages to get used to the fluid , the weight (but you never get used to looking pregnant!) Just try little snacks till you get more used to it , also forgot to mention watch for constipation! You might not notice but one of the signs is that the amount of fluid you drain out wont be alot , it sort of blocks it if your constipated.

Oh yeah! My first week or so I felt tremendously bloated. I was doing 3000 mls bags during manual exchanges because of my size. I had to go out and buy new pants with an elastic waist. I still wear them because belts cinch accross my catheter. After 1-1 1/2 weeks I got used to the fluid. Good luck, Betty.
