Hi all,
I just wanted to relate my husbands experience with SSDI in hopes that maybe it will help others. I will say I do think he may have had an easier go than most.
We applied for SSDI in March 2011. My husband was immediately turned because I completed the forms and put his first day of disability as the day he found out about his kidney disease. They simply said he made too much money and sent a denial letter 3 days later. My mistake.
We then filed again in May of 2011. This time I used his first day of dialysis as the start of disability. A few weeks later, they requested another form that detailed his work history and illness dates. We sat on the forms for months. They sent letter after letter telling us we had until August 4, 2011 to fill out the form. Many of these letters came after August 4.
Finally, in January 2012, I was off work and insisted he take the letter into the office. They asked for proof of his medication cost which we could have sent that day but we sent it a week or so later.
About two weeks after that, they called and asked to speak with me, which I thought was odd. They only asked me if he was still working and I told them it was very part-time. I asked why were they calling for me and the lady said, "We have to get this paperwork out of here today."
March 10, 2012, a large check showed up in the mail. A week later, the letter explaining the check and informing us he had been approved came--of course by then the mortgage company had been sent the entire large check so if he had not been entitled to it we would have been in deep water.
The letter indicated he had been disabled since 3/2011 and the check covered 9/2011 - 3/2012.
His income did not interfere with the ruling eventhough some months after 3/2011 he did make over $1000.
Hope this helps.
