I absolutely HATE sending out Christmas Cards. What a chore, like I have nothing else to do but send cards to people, most of whom I see a couple of times a week.
AND, last minute, unexpected Christmas gifts.

Chiming in a little late on this thread.   

My grands are in public schools.  Two grands were in their Christmas program at their school. They are a show choir, so there was costumes (elfs, Santa, Mary and baby, etc) and lots of fun songs.  They did also include a song about the dradle, Kwanzaa, and a pinata.  I grew up in the "good old days" and I don't see too much difference with my schooling and theirs.   Our holiday is very focused on the reason we celebrate. We go to church, listen to great music, volunteer, support charities instead of over gifting. I think we are in no danger of ever losing Christmas.  Many of us still celebrate with all our traditions passed down through generations, find great comfort in the church services, the reading of stories, etc.  The kids love the Jesus Birthday Cake --- so I think it boils down to the holiday is what we put into it.    I will step down from my Christmas soap box now!!

I generally love Xmas. This year was a little different. My sister and I spent Xmas dinner with out 95 year old mother st the nursing home. We would not have missed that opportunity if you paid me. On the Xmas table, there was not a soft drink, water, alcohol, not a bon bon to be seen, not a jelly bean or peanut for nibbles, no decorations , not even a serviette. The meal was a small plate of dried turkey and ham followed by a minuscule plate of plum pudding. Now get this for the price: $50 per person. Talk about Ebenezer Scrooge. The only saving grace was that Mum knew no different (God bless her cotton sicks) but I do feel ripped off.

I hate getting a Christmas present as my birthday present too.  It had better be a huge gift if you wrapped the two together!

I love Christmas!

I, too, love the colorfully decorated and aromatic tree in our living room.
I love to see the new cat playing with the low-hanging ornaments (plastic, just for her.)
I love the lights on the many houses especially the new LEDs (apologies to the OCDs - I did a terrible job this year!)
I love the music - the traditional and the new as well as the irreverent but increasingly I like the spiritual songs best.
I love the food - the tamales, the paches, the pernil, the ponche and the Christmas cookies, but especially that the family (my brother's) which has dispersed as the children have grown comes back together with the preparation of the feast as a family event.
I love that a special gift, my brother's first grandchild, spent a part of her first Christmas here with us.
I especially love the feeling - the magic, the happiness, the caring, and a certain lightness that comes over all of our daily endeavors.
And the BOWL GAMES! Did I mention the Bowl Games? Go Gators! Roll Tide!

What I dislike about Christmas is that it has to end. I guess if it didn't have its own time it wouldn't be so special. Happy New Years everyone!

(I'll let you in on my secret - my holiday doesn't end until MLK Day. I will be playing Christmas music in my car until then, I may even bake some more Christmas cookies and make more ponche for the college bowl games.)

1) fake (future) in-laws

2) driving miles and miles in the car

3) ending my 2 week break from my monsters ahem, I mean students
