Kidney Backup Call
«
on:
March 04, 2009, 05:37:24 PM »
I'm so scared. Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at 7:05PM, I received a phone call from the Transplant Coordinator. She told me I'm listed as a "kidney backup". The potential donor is middle age male with creatinine of 0.9-1.0. According to the coordinator this is good and normal. At this time, it will be around 1:00AM before the gentleman will be in the OR. They will know more once they do all the testing.
I'm scared to death. Right now I'm feeling confuse and shock. My pessimistic self is making me feel I should not do it. I guess I'm feeling this way because I really don't feel sick. In fact, I feel great most of the time. If you see me in person, you would never guest I was even sick. Don't get me wrong, I'm thankful for the opportunity.
I'm trying to read more on some of the posts from people that already went through the process. Learning from their experiences. Especially, all the pros and cons.
I know it's not guaranteed yet, but I'm just thankful there is hope that I may not have to wait 5-7 years on the waiting list.
I'm going to continue to pray about this.

RG you don't have to take it. Another one will come along. Think about it. It is a wonderful opportunity but not a cure. There are a lot of drugs to take the rest of your life, but it will get you off the machine if you are on it yet. Sorry, I didn't do my homework on you.
If you are on the machine I would take it. It will make your life more normal. But, if you are just not ready then pass and another chance will come.
Sorry, I wasn't much help.
Best of luck whatever you decide and keep us posted.

It's always a tough tough decision in my view RG and one that requires a definite leap into the unknown because there are no guarantees. Just keep on feeling/praying your way through it and if you don't feel ready to grab the empty trapeze coming at you then don't do it. I'll be thinking of you and trust that you'll come to the right decision for you.

It's been 13 1/2 hours since the donor went in to surgery. Is no news, good news?

I say jump on it.
You may feel good today as i also feel great. But in a couple months that feeling may go away fast.
if it was meant to be so be it. If it wasnt you wont get it.
Why go on dialysis if you can avoid it.
From everyhting i have read here most agree if you can get a donor prior to dialysis DO IT.
Good Luck

I was able to avoid dialysis (at least for now) and I, too, didn't feel that "sick". Tired yes, but sick no. I'm very glad I was able to transplant and stay off dialysis. As long as you make the decision for yourself it will be the right decision.
Good Luck Rookiegirl!

Well, it's good to know you are far enough up the list to get a call, anyhow.
