Not sure why but this name keeps popping up in my mind.   And i haven't seen this book in well over 35 years.

Most people i ask about it look at me like I'm crazy.

I know the book. I read it to my Grade 2's. It is called Tikki,Tikki Tempo. The kids love it!! It is about a little chinese boy who has the really long name tikki tikki tempo nosa rembo.....(can't remember the rest).  He almost drowns in a well because his mother insists he be called by his full name. His brother goes to tell his mother that tikki is in the well but she makes him say his full name and he almost drowns.  At the end it says this is why Chinese children now have really short names.

Phew thanks Del.

I just researched it or googled it.  There must be two versions.  Many people recall rickyticky tembo while others recall tikki tikki tembo.  I read my book on Guam you likely on Newfoundland.

And yes his brother ran home to tell (from what i recall) Manuel that ricky fell in the well ect ect ect.
I just have to figure out why it keeps popping in my mind???

For some reason I seem to remember a Ricky Ticky Tavy (unsure of the spelling)?  Same thing or no?  I think it was a mouse or a rat?

If you are just coming to this thread and are confused, there are in fact two different books.    Paul.Karen "hybridized" their names... :rofl;

Tikki,Tikki Tempo

Ricki Tiki Tavi

Here's a photo of a boarding school friend of mine in Jamaica with a tame pet mongoose.  They were brought in originally to kill snakes and they were very effective, they wiped them out entirely.  Now they eat people's chickens and such instead.

Same problem the Hawaiian Islands have with the mongoose.  But I was very excited to see one just walking around.   I loved Ricki Ticki Tavi.  Now I have to look up the other one.

LOVED that book.  Read it, read it to my kids, now my daughter reads it to her first graders (she is a teacher).  I remember Ricky Ticky tembo, noso nimbo, yamagamagucchi... or something like that :clap;

Yes he did!!!   So did his brother only the brother almost drowned because the mom was making chang say the full name of his brother.  It was disrespectful not to call him by his full name!!
