Dialysis daughter

Hi,
I am a 26 year old Indian girl who now lives in US past 2 years. I lost my father to kideny disease this Feb. he was 56, (09\20\1949-02\09\2006) and Professor of Chemistry at Govt. Science College, Bhopal, a small town in Bhopal, India. He went on dialysis in Jan 2005 and only survived 13 month =s. I came to US in Apr 2005 and couldnt meet him for last 10 months of his life.

I am sad that I came here when little too late but am glad I found it. Its amazing. My father's kideny failed because of diabetes and he could hv saved them had he been careful with his diet. And with him, i lost the person I loved most

In india, facilities are not good and avg expectancy is very less. People die because they cant afford dialysis. I want to change that and bring more awareness. I came here because my father passed away on dialysis table. They just started the dialysis, and within a minute he had a heart attack and though they technically declared him dead an hour later, it was over. My mom believes that he had dialysis just the day before (he used 2 dialyse 3 days a week) and he died because he didnt need that dialysis beause there was not fluid retention and dialysis caused electrolytic imbalance and death. It was his 87th dialysis. I just want to let it know that even over dialysis is bad especially for diabetics with host of other problems.

Hi Prachi,  I am so very sorry to hear about your dad's death and i am glad you came to us,  not only are we a terrific website for this matter, we are an awesome support group.  From my understanding you said there was no fluid retention, there doesnt need to be fluid retention to do dialysis, if he had went in without gaining any fluid weight then they still needed to dialyze him to remove the toxins out of his body.  Again, i am so very sorry for his sudden death and i dont know what your beliefs are but i hope you find it in yourself to accept the fact that maybe it was just his time to go.  I have dealt with alot of death in my lifetime (and i am only 38) but after awhile you start understanding what this whole journey is about.  Good luck to you and your family and please remember, we are here for you too....

   My deepest sympathy in the loss of your father. I lost my Dad at the age of 6 and he was only 48.
   Hope you can find comfort that he is no longer suffering.

Sorry to read about the loss of your Dad.  I lost my Mum when she was only 47 and I was 19.  There are people out there who understand what you have been through.

Prachi, one of my best friends is East Indian.  Hyungee?  That means something.  She (Navdeep) says it to her family all the time.  Hyungee?

Anyway, I'm so sorry that your father died, but at least in the United States he had a chance.  In India he may not have even received treatment.  Your job now is to make sure you don't "inherit" his kidney problems.  Sometimes it is in the family history.  Go get checked out. 

I hope you can change things in India for kidney patients.

I dont understand, Is kidney disease transmitted even when cause of failure is diabetes.

Diabetes often runs in families and kidney disease is a common complication. I know lots of other folks could answer that more officially than I have!
