Keep on going...It can't get any worse, can it?

Hello there, I am John...51 years old and just started on dialysis on Sept. 11.  Didn't like it at first, but have since gotten somewhat used to it, and really do feel a lot better than before.  Funny how you don't realize just how sick you are until it hits you in the face.

I'm a refinery control systems engineer in the Pacific Northwest, Bellingham, WA.  Married with four kids, and still have a young one at home.  This has been a real change in lifestyle, and juggling the time between dialysis and work is a challenge!  I'm looking forward to learning new things and getting to know some of you here!

Lost the left kidney to a large kidney stone 1995
Cardiac Catheterization 12/11/2007 The contrast dye took out the right kidney!
Cardiac Quadruple Bypass 12/14/2007
AV Fistula done 4/2008
Diagnosed ESRD 9/11/2008 Started in center Hemo the same day.
Buttonhole access not without problems!
Living Donor transplant at UWMC Seattle June 29, 2011

Lost vision due to retinopathy 12/2005, 30 Laser Surg 2006
ESRD diagnosed 12/2006
03/2007 Fantastic Eye Surgeon in ND got my sight back and implanted lenses in both eyes, great distance & low reading.
Gortex 4/07.  Started dialysis in ND 5/4/2007
Gortex clotted off Thanksgiving Week of 2007, was unclotted and promptly clotted off 1/2 hour later so Permacath Rt chest.
3/2008 move to NC to be close to children.
2 Step fistula, 05/08-elevated 06/08, using mid August.
Aug 5, 08, trained NxStage and Home on 9/3/2008.
Fistulagram 09/2008. In hospital 10/30/08, Bowel Obstruction.
Back to RAI-Latrobe In Center. No home hemo at this time.
GOD IS GOOD

Welcome to our community, John!  So glad that you found us!  I too am a September starter (2005) and I do agree that i have become used to it and i do feel much better these days. You didn't say which kind of dialysis you are doing.  I am glad that you are still able to work.  I know about the juggling.  But the important thing is that we are still around to make a difference in the lives of our loved ones.  You now have a new family - the IHD family!  :grouphug;.  You will find that this is the place to be when you need information, support, or even some fun.   So keep reading and keep posting.

Pyelonephritis (began at 8 mos old)
Home haemo 1980-1985 (self-cannulated with 15 gauge sharps)
Cadaveric transplant 1985
New upper-arm fistula April 2008
Uldall-Cook catheter inserted May 2008
Haemo-dialysis, self care unit June 2008
(2 1/2 hours X 5 weekly)
Self-cannulated, 15 gauge blunts, buttonholes.
Living donor transplant (sister-in law Kathy) Feb. 2009
First failed kidney transplant removed Apr.  2009
Second trx doing great so far...all lab values in normal ranges

Feb 13, 2008 - Activated on "the list".
Nov 5, 2008 - Received living donor transplant from my sister-in-law, Etta.
Nov 5, 2011 - THREE YEARS POST TRANSPLANT!  :D
