My kidney adventures: They began in September of 1993 when my nephrologist informed me that he would be putting my name on the transplant list. I hate getting bad news in my birthday month but there it was. About seven months later, I started hemodialysis. In Jan. 1996, after about 18 months on dialysis, I received a kidney transplant. Both of my own kidneys were eventually removed. The new kidney functioned pretty well for six years then pooped out. Back on hemodialysis in Feb. 2002. Then a dialysis tech told me about how great peritoneal dialysis was from the point of view of independence and not having to go to the clinic three times a week. So, I've been doing pd at home for about 3 years now and definitely prefer it to the clinic. My daughter inherited my Polycystic Kidney Disease, and she has had a transplant, too. She has two daughters... I don't like having a chronic health condition! Am not enthusiastic about another transplant because of the surgery, hospital stay, and IMMUNOSUPPRESSANT MEDS. As a result of the meds and having to be careful about contracting anything, I became a germaphobe!

Hi Libran,

Welcome to our site.  You have been through a lot and your experience will be very helpful.  We cover all areas of dialysis.  I hope you are eligible for another transplant.

Hi Libran, welcome to the site. I find it interesting that you don't look forward to a second transplant at this point. Most people on this site who have had a transplant would like a shot at a second one, but some of the most illustrious members of IHD.com have opted for (very) long-term dialysis even though they could be transplanted. These include Zach and the mighty Epoman himself. The discussion on whether or not to get a transplant has spawned one of the most heated and in my opinion one of the most interesting debates we have had on here, so hopefully you can give your views on this subject as well. In the meantime, welcome!  :welcomesign;
