Thanks so much for all the help!!!   How many carbs should i shoot for at each meal???  My mother in law is diabetic but doesn't have to take meds for it because she has gotten it under control.  She tells me she eats 5 to 6 carbs per meal!  How is that even feasible????  LOL!

This is what my day was like

9:25 - bs med
9:55 - bs 226
10:10 - Breakfast 2 pieces wheat bread (11g carbs) barbacoa, 1 egg beater, tiny amount of grated cheese (you don't know how bad I wanted all this on a nice soft homemade flour tortilla!), 1 cup coffe with dash of milk and splenda.
10:22 - 10 mg prednisone and other meds
3:00 - lunch wheat tortilla, barbacoa, little bit of cheese
7:50 - (accidentally took bs before meds) - bs 302
7:51 - bs meds
8:20 - bs 323 (why would it go up after I took my meds???)   :urcrazy;
8:25 - dinner beef roast, onions, carrots, small potato with sour cream.. butter...bit of cheese, 1 small coconut candy... full of carbs for sure!
9:30 - bs 297

Hi Donnia,
My mom is diabetic and they keep emphasizing to her how important it is to keep your glucose level steady - so the snacks are necessary (one between breakfast and lunch, one mid-afternoon)

Since you're off dialysis this might help. I found this on WebMd:

Diabetes: Sample Meal Plan

If you have diabetes you should follow a diabetes diet. Here’s a sample diabetic meal plan that is about 1,600 calories and 220 grams of carbohydrate. Remember to drink two 8-ounce glasses of water with each meal.
Breakfast

(360 calories, 52.5 grams carbohydrate)

1 slice toasted whole wheat bread with 1 teaspoon margarine
1/4 cup egg substitute or cottage cheese
1/2 cup oatmeal
1/2 cup skim milk
1/2 small banana
Lunch

(535 calories, 75 grams carbohydrate)

1 cup vegetable soup with 4-6 crackers
1 turkey sandwich (2 slices whole wheat bread, 1 ounce turkey and 1 ounce low-fat cheese, 1 teaspoon mayonnaise)
1 small apple

Dinner

(635 calories, 65 grams carbohydrate)

4 ounces broiled chicken breast with basil and oregano sprinkled on top
2/3 cup cooked brown rice
1/2 cup cooked carrots
1 small whole grain dinner roll with 1 teaspoon margarine
Tossed salad with 2 tablespoons low-fat salad dressing
4 unsweetened canned apricot halves or 1 small slice of angel food cake

Snacks

(Each has 60 calories or 15 grams carbohydrate. Pick two per day.)

16 fat-free tortilla chips with salsa
1/2 cup artificially sweetened chocolate pudding
1 ounce string cheese plus one small piece of fruit
3 cups "lite" popcorn

Reviewed by Certified Diabetes Educators in the Department of Patient Education and Health Information and by physicians in the Department of Endocrinology at The Cleveland Clinic.

My average meal is 50 to 60 carbs - not 5 or 6!

Thanks for the links kitkatz!

Okarol....  I have been trying to throw in some good snacks in too.... my favorite... small bowl of fat free cottage cheese with a little bit of pineapple in it.

Thats what I was thinking jbeany!  My MIL ..ummm... how do I say this nicely.... thinks she knows all.  I just started taking 5mg Glipizide on Saturday and I had tested my BS ...it was 314 and she freaked out.  She immediately went to her room and got her diabetes medicine... whatever it is..... 100mg!!!  She tried to get me to take it... I said "NO WAY!!!"  She said "it isn't going to hurt you! Noone is on 5mg diabetes medicine, your doctor's an idiot"  I wanted to laugh!  I reminded her that I am on lots of medication because of my transplant and I can't take anything that the doctors havent approved of..... blah blah blah...  Oh... did I mention that this was at night!  Shoot, I coulda ended up in a coma!

Seems like my glucose levels are getting better.  I havent had a reading in the 300's in 2 days.  Tuesday evening it was 271 and this evening it was 214 :)  In the mornings it has been 173 and 184.

How many carbs should the average snack have?  I have 'light' yogurt but it is 20 carbs!!!  I also have Weight Watchers yogurt and it is 15 carbs.  I bought sugar free fat free pudding to make and I think they are 15 carbs per serving.

Oh yeah, my labs from Monday... my triglycerides were 1800!!!  LOL  I guess the fish oil tablets are not helping!!!  My neph is putting me on meds that focus more on the triglycerides....

This site is good for looking stuff up, you can even enter a food log and it will show you what your carb, fat and protein intake was each day.
http://foodsdatabase.com/

My favorite snack is a cup of blueberries (83 calories and 21 carbs) with 2 TBSP of Cool Whip "Free" (15 calories and 3 carbs) - you could have less berries to get closer to about 14 carbs. I microwave the berries to slightly heat them - then put on the cool whip - feels like I am having blueberry pie.

I also like Dannon Light & Fit Yogurt - its got 80 calories, 0 fat, 16 carbs and is good for you.

Baby carrots are about one carb each so I eat about 15 of them which is about 75 calories.

Jell-O Pudding Cups, Chocolate, sugar free, are 60 calories, 1.5 fat and 14 carbs. You could put a couple of TBSP's of Cool Whip Free on these too.

I hope you find more things to help you balance your sugar.

Donnia, I'm glad things are improving.  It sounds like you are doing everything right (including ignoring your MIL).  I'm sure the doc's will keep adjusting your meds til they get it right.  It is better to adjust slowly, low BS is the worst!

Donnia, sounds like you are on the right track. Hoping the blood sugars continue to come down. I also hope the Doc gets you something that works better than the fish oil too  :thumbup;
