While her new kidney is functioning well, Donnia Robles said steroid medication has raised her glucose levels well above normal and now she's being treated for diabetes.

"All I can do to keep sane right now is laugh," she said. "I get one thing fixed and another thing breaks."

The 35-year-old former special-education aide and interpreter for the deaf is exercising and dieting to help combat the problem.

The San Angelo woman said she will not be able to return to her job working with schoolchildren because of the danger of picking up infections from the students. She is looking for another job, and, in the meantime, is organizing fundraisers to help with medical costs.

"I never knew how expensive medical bills could be," she said. "I thought I was prepared."

I was on steroids to treat my FSGS several years ago. I'm not diabetic, but the steroids raised my blood sugar level to 1500 (not a typo). I still remember it all too clearly. I called my neph in frustration to ask what I was supposed to do about the latest side effect -- I couldn't see. Many hours later, he called back, told me to drop everything and get to the lab for bloodwork, then go home and stay there, but do not let myself fall asleep. Hours later again he called and told me to get to the hospital NOW! When I checked in, the medical staff was amazed that I was conscious and functioning at a relatively normal level. My neph didn't want me to fall asleep because he was afraid I'd lapse into a coma.

My blood sugars have sucked pretty bad LOL... last night before dinner it was 323.    I had to do a 12 hour fast this am and did labs at 11 then took my med at 11:30 and at noon my bs was 183... not too bad considering my other lab results. 

I will see how it looks tonight.

My town is sooo very generous!  I got over all more than 100 dozen tamales sold.  Man, it is alot of work though!

Boy it always sems like when you fix one thing something else breaks!!  Hope you get your bs under control.

The highest one I had was over 1800 and I was still awake and slightly functioning. I could barely move a muscle while standing, laying though I could move my arms. What a feeling I do not miss!

Yesterday before dinner my bs was 303.  For dinner I had a salad with lettuce, tomato, cucumber, avacado, cheese, ranch dressing and 2 pieces wheat toast with seasonings made into crutons.

For diabetics 303 is high. The most optimum range is 80-120 mg/dl, but there are a few people who need to be around 140 to not feel a low blood sugar episode. There are other factors to consider with a blood sugar reading also, time of day, fasting, time after meal, time medication given.

Yep, 303 is high!  With meds, diet and exercise I have gotten my BS down pretty good!  This morning my BS was 101  and this evening it was 129.  Can't wait to see how it is tomorrow morning.

This is one big reason that I just decided that I am not going to do the prednisone treatment for FSGS. I only had a 10-20% that it might work and that was not enough, considering all of the permanent complications one can have. I also have severe joint problems already and they would be much worse with that stuff. I figure that it is better to be in the best health that you can be when going into dialysis, rather than having a bunch of other problems too.

Donnia- so sorry to hear about the diabetes...do they have you on a pill or are you insulin dependent? If on a pill, make sure to have your liver enzymes checked. My mother's doc never checked hers and that is what led to her liver failure.
