Title: What's your favorite TV show right now?
Post by: okarol on October 27, 2014, 02:58:04 PM
I was looking for something new to watch since some shows are ending now. I loved Ray Donovan and The Bridge.
I power-watched House of Cards, which was really good. I have never seen The Wire so may get that from Netflix.
I also heard Once Upon A Time is addicting.
Any other recommendations?

Pawn Stars -I hate most reality shows but like the interesting items that walk thru their door and how they provide historical facts. Also like the "old man" and how he doesn't put up with squat from the others.

Turner Classic Movie Channel -particularly old "film noirs" and the fact that it's commercial free!

The Kelly File
The First 48 Hours -I was never in law enforcement. Let's just say that my past life involved a lot of investigating and who-dunnits.
Cops -I am always amazed by the patience and courage these cops have with the idiots and meth heads they must encounter.
Bait Car -love watching "instant justice" being served.

Lost all interest in Greys Anatomy, but love all the NCIS episodes, Hawaii 5-0, Blue Bloods, 2 Broke Girls, 2 & 1/2 men, stalker, gosh, the lists are endless all of a sudden. Best of all Blacklist!!! James Spader is awesome.

I very much like to watch the History Channel.
Some of the stories take only about one hour
and I appreciate how illuminating many of them are in that very short time...

I sometimes watch on youtube the most fascinating stories about US-crime-investigations...
and their way of investigation is often very illuminating and extremely helpful to learn for anyone
who might be "getting stuck" whilst investigating some questions in their own field ...
I particularly liked an US-series shown on youtube, where two ladies, a lawyer and a forensic investigator
exhibited a most intelligent way how to investigate very professionally and their special way of investigation
inspired me very much, in how to tackling some of my own questions and how to get answers in my own field...

Right now it's American Horror Story. I recently watched all 8 seasons of Weeds and all 3 seasons of United States of Tara on Netflix and loved both of them.

I have discovered this on u-tube and it is most interesting:
Homicide Hunter Season with Lt. J. Kenna "chairing" and explaining different Episodes...
For example : 3 Episode 13 - Blood Sisters ...
Lt. J. Kenna  is one of those rare persons, who is able to logically "sum it all up" in very few words without any "frills"...
... and because he "has practically seen it all", he appears to have become quite philosophical about "things"...
Very impressive...

At the moment I'm watching 'Revenge.' On season 2 now, am loving it!!

Also watching season 2 of Broadchurch not sure if that's in the US?

I love Revenge.  We have watched it from day 1.  Season 2 is good, season 3 is getting a little on the ridiculous side and the current season is just getting ludicrous.  But hey, I've gotten this far and I want to see it through to the end.

My current favorite is Empire.  It's on FOX.  It just started right after the holidays.  You can catch up on Fox on Demand.

At the moment I'm watching 'Revenge.' On season 2 now, am loving it!!

Also watching season 2 of Broadchurch not sure if that's in the US?

I've just finished watching the first season of Broadchurch on Netflix!  I LOVE that show!  Season 2 starts here on BBC America next month.  Can't wait!

Cattlekid, I am also really enjoying Empire!

I'm following Justified; this is its last season.

We've started watching Backstrom on Fox.  I love Scandinavian crime books/series and TV series, and Backstrom is supposed to be based on a character in one of those series, and I'm not sure I like it.  There are things I really like about it, but Rainn Wilson seems to be trying too hard; I suspect he has to grow into and mellow down his character.

I like the new comedy Fresh off the Boat.

On Netflix, I've just finished The Politician's Husband (with Broadchurch's David Tennant and Emily Mortimer, two faves of mine) and will be starting The Fall (Gillian Anderson of X-Files fame).

There are so many good things on offer but not enough time.  I can't sit still long enough to binge watch, although with temps outside in the single digits, I guess this is the perfect time for that.

Moosemom its the last episode of season 2 broad church tonight, I think will be a cliffhanger to mean a season 3. The 2nd season has had a lot of criticism but I guess it would be difficult to live up to the first season. I'm enjoying it tho.

I've been reading in the online editions of some British newspapers about the criticism of Season 2 (while avoiding spoilers!), but that's not going to stop me from enjoying it when it comes next month.  I can understand how most people might most enjoy the "whodunit" aspect of a show, but I am also interested in the aftermath.  What happens in a small town after such a terrible thing has happened?  Can't wait!  You must let me know if the finale tonight does indeed end with a cliffhanger.  I'd love a season 3!

Just watched the broad church season n 2 finale. No cliffhanger but said there will be a season 3 :) you must let me know what u think of it when it airs in the US, 2 storylines run this season, the aftermath obviously and the case Hardy didn't solve that haunted him before he came to broad church. So no idea what they, all do with season 3. Broad church is filmed not that far from us and last week we went for a walk on the beach there and saw the newsagents, beaver scouts hall and the police building (which is actually an apartment block!) It was freezing cold but think will go back in the summer!!

Oh other thing am watching is final season of the mentalist

Lainie, that is so cool that you live that close to fictious Broadchurch, and I am so glad there will be a season three.  I will be sure to give you my review of season two.

The series finale of The Mentalist aired just last week over here.  It ended on a sweet note.

Are there any other series from the UK that you like anf think might find their way over here?  Do you watch Peaky Blinders?  I have that on my Netflix queue.  Oh, hubbie and I are watching Grantchester which follows right after Downton Abbey.  When I was in the UK last October, I saw the first two eps on ITV and thought that US viewers might like it, so I was really pleased to see it come to our telly boxes!

Whenever I have time, I continue to watch (on u-tube) different episodes
of the Homicide Hunter Season with Lt. J. Kenna "chairing" and explaining different cases ...
I wish we had someone like him - with such a knife-sharp logic - playing a decisive part at Scotland Yard ...
... could be a blessing for the country... and we could perhaps have many cases solved ...

Forgot , also in the UK out now is 'Murder in The First.' Am enjoying that!

Moosemom I watched Grantchester, quite enjoyed it, if u liked that you'd prob like the detective series 'Inspector George Gently.' Don't know if that's in US?

Other British recommendations from netflix form me are Luther (detective), Sherlock, Whitechapel ans 'Jonatathan Creek (bit of an old series, the new ones aren't so good, when they change one of the main characters but a diff take on crime solving (a reporter and a guy who makes up magic tricks solve unsolvable crimes, plenty of laughs between the 2 main characters. ) They r all on netflix UK dunno about US?

karol we watched  while ago 'The Tunnel' which sounds like 'The Bridge', a body found in the middle of channel tunnel so involves both UK and French detectives.

Have watched the Killing, (US version) not yet seen the 4th series.

Am waiting for the next series of Castle at the mo, and am watching season 4 of Grimm and Supernatural.

Kind of embarrassed to say but I alos watching season 5 of dance Moms , love it lol!!!

What would u all say your all time favourite show is? From whenever?

My all-time favorite has to be ER.

I was working in a hospital at the time it came out.  I would watch that and Gray's Anatomy back to back on Thursday nights.  I would be a sobbing mess when ER was over each week.  On Fridays at lunch, we would discuss ER with the nurses that had moved over to the IT department and they would tell me what parts of it were BS and which parts were accurate.

What would u all say your all time favourite show is? From whenever?

I think my favorite show of all time is One Foot in the Grave.  You'd be laughing, and then all of a sudden something would happen, and you'd find yourself with tears in your eyes.  Justified comes in a close second.  I love TV that has truly outstanding writing.

Lainiepop, I have not heard of Inspector George Gently;  I'll have to go see if it is available here.

I remember Jonathan Creek from decades ago.  Have they made a remake of it with new characters?  I'll have to check on that, too.

The US version of The Killing, season 4, is tremendous.  Incredibly tense.  I love Linden and Holder and like the way it all ended.  Let me know what you think once you've seen it!

Meant to ask have any of you seen 'Grace point" the US version of broadchurch?

One of my all time faces was 'waking the dead' a UK detective thing. I'm a fan of those sort of shows;)

Moosemom 'George gently' is a detective drama set in the 1960s similar time period to Grantchester?!

I had never even heard of Gracepoint.  Just googled it and was surprised to see that David Tennant is in the lead role as he is in Broadchurch.  I might check it out OnDemand just for the novelty value.

Speaking of Broadchurch, I was so surprised to see Pauline Quirke!  I remembered her from Birds of a Feather; lainiepop, did you ever see that show?  In looking at info about Gracepoint, I see that Jacki Weaver is playing the Susan Wright character.  Now, I adore Jacki Weaver.  If you can, watch the Australian movie Animal Kingdom, and you will be a fan of hers forever!

I never saw Waking the Dead, but I do vaguely remember it being on tv.

I can stream George Gently on either Netflix or Hulu, so I'll probably do that sometime soon.  Looking at the pictures from it, it does look familiar.

Oh, I'm looking forward to the new season of Orphan Black on BBC America.

AND I have found out that there is a new season of Foyle's War that's been shown in the UK.  Is that right, lainiepop?  I love that show and am hoping it will be coming to PBS very soon.

I don't watch Foyles War but my parents do, I think its been showing this last month.

Yes I love birds of a feather love watching the repeats. Did u know they have done 2 new seasons, one last yr and second just finished airing, with the 3 original girls! Pauline Quirk has been in lots of things and I think before they shot the new birds of a feather the girls did live shows of it on stage.

One thing starting this week from America is "Critical'. I'm not a big fan of medical dramas (well we live it right?!) But its had a lot of hype has anyone seen it?

I am still watching the Homicide Hunter Season with Lt. J. Kenna "chairing" and explaining different cases...
I feel very priviledged to watch the films and listen to what he says, because he has "seen it all" and really sounds
like a "seasoned" University Professor of criminology... which is most interesting because I never would have guessed
that there could be so much thought behind every single crime...

I remember being fascinated by "Jonathan Creek" when it first started, perhaps it was "the right film at the right moment",
but then it started to become a little predictable, like a "well tried out" formula for a successful series...
and because of that it lost its appeal altogether ...

American Idol has started again and I love that they no longer make fun of people who try out and are so awful they shouldn't be shown, then embarrassed.
Also like House of Cards, Shameless, Downton Abbey, Broadchurch, Episodes, Homeland and Project Runway. Oh and I started watching Survivor, we'll see how that goes.
I record everything,  and skip through commercials, so it' not as bad as it looks.  :P

I live in noSignalLand..so I must pay $$$$$$ for DirectTV to get even staticÖ and last year I added Showtime as it seems to offer 20 different channels.

I get fascinated with reality..because they are actuality NOT real reality..and my scriptwriter brain starts figuring WHICH scenes were maybe REAL, and which were planned to perfection to seem 'real' Ö.I can almost diagram them.

PURE BRAIN CANDY

Little Women, both coasts, and Tara's Little Family. TLF cracks  me up this feisty as hell 30 something rocker actress gets knocked up by her live in BF [ out of 6 LA women the only one NOT planning for a baby gets preggers??  was that 'reality' planned??]  ..and actually shows some real emotion, no makeup (well, that is planned as part of 'real reality', as actresses are oK to look ugly and plain sometimes when the role calls for  it.)

and I found her drummer/actor BF was  showing to be a real niece human when the baby came.. BOTH of them were seemingly shallow all thru the LA show..but Tarra is the producer..she got smart quick,   she directs this program, and it keeps them from having to hustle as elves in Hollywood.

My BIG GRIPE both Coast shows is HOW MANY FIGHTS are in each episode.. and then they all fly off to pleasure land1. cold weather fun. 2. hot weather island fun 3. Outdoor adventure fun 4. Party down in New Orleans funÖso F'ing phony.

If it is meant to show us they have real problems and real relationship pains it is over the top..NOBODY is that ready to punch each other out.. then thent kiss and makeup.

UH,  wait, why are these my favorite shows???  Oh yeah..also My Big Fat Fabulous LifeÖ...she IS funny!

I like the Shark Tank and The Profit. They both show some great ideas and innovative ways to fix every day problems. They also apply common business sense and room for it's applications for perpetual growth. Good ingenuity and imaginations. Too bad the average Joe has to "sell" to a millionaire to get the opportunity to make it big. That's being at the right place at the right time with lucky stars in your pocket! http://ihatedialysis.com/forum/Smileys/classic/new_flower.gif. I could learn some Business sense from it.

I can't believe no one mentioned my favorites.

Life Bellow Zero
Tanked
Insane Pools
Columbo (not exactly new, but still a favorite)
Vicar of Dibley (also old)
I used to watch Paranormal Egypt for a good laugh. They're on YouTube and hilariously fake. Did you know King Tut spoke English?

I loved Vicar of Dibley!!!  I have most episodes on DVD and will watch them again from time to time.

okarol, I was trying to remember who it was who also liked Broadchurch...it was you!  I loved that show.

I've just finished House of Cards on Netflix and am looking forward to starting the new season of Orange is the New Black.

My husband and I always look forward to The Graham Norton Show and Men In Blazers, which is a weekly show by 2 British expats who go over the highlights of the weekend's action in the English Premier League (soccer).  It's aimed toward American audiences and so has many American cultural references (Game of Throne analogies are rampant).  I've followed English football for years since I lived over there, but my husband knows nothing about the game, yet he has to have his Men in Blazers fix.  So we are in mourning now that the season is over until August.  But the Men in Blazers have a podcast; you should hear them bang on about Sepp Blatter!  LOL!

I do love Game of Thrones and Veep.  Vice is extremely interesting.  We've recorded the new season of Orphan Black and plan to binge watch it.  I'm looking forward to new shows starting in the summer, like True Detective.

I liked vicar of dibly too. They air oldies on a channel called gold over here. Like dibly, birds of a feather, only fools and horses etc.

Moosemom has season 2 of broadchurch aired in the US yet? I've just finished watching the US remake  gracepoint and much preferred that ending!

True detective season 2 airs here inna couple wks, wonder if we,ll need subtitles for the accent again!! Second season of murder in the first is starting too, really loved the first one.

Just finished the 4th (and final?!) Series of revenge too.

Just watched seasons 1 and 2 of 'orphan black'. We loved it watched it back to back the last couple of weeks. Season 3 has just aired in the US but no news on when it's out in UK yet :(

We have all 10 eps of season 3 on DVR but have not yet had the time to watch them.  I see a weekend of binge watching coming up after we've returned from summer hols.

We've been watching "Crimson Field" and the new version of "Poldark".  We've started Season 2 of "True Detective", and despite the show being pretty much panned here in the US, we like it.

I'm watching "Mr. Robot" and "Deutchland 83", a German series (8 eps) showing on The Sundance Channel.

Lainiepop, Season 2 of Broadchurch has come and gone here in the US; I loved both seasons.  I don't think there will be a Season 2 of "Gracepoint".  I glanced at the last ep of Gracepoint (I didn't know it existed until you mentioned it) and couldn't see a difference between that ending and the one in Broadchurch.  Perhaps I should have watched the whole ep.  What was the main difference?

Arrr moosemom I so wanna watch season 3 now!! Is it just me who loved the Helena character?! Lol, once she wasn't quite the maniac as first portrayed ( my daughter's name is Elena lol but sometimes people call her Helena?!) I also like Alison, plenty of humour even in the serious tones.

We are on I think episode 6 or 7 of true detective and it's OK but getting a bit lost in the storyline. Gonna start season 2 of murder in the first as almost got them all taped on sky planner.

The difference in gracepoint ending (SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!) was the dad didn't do it, the son (his friend did). It was an accident. He'd been watching his dad meet Danny saw Danny ran off the in anger ran at his dad with a hockey stick, not realising as he took a swing Danny ran back telling him it was all OK, the swing hit Danny in the head. I only felt better ending becahsey with season 2 of broadchurch the dad is backtracking and saying he didn't commit the murder after previously confessing in season 1, I feel they're trying to drag it out as why would he confess unless to protect his son? Maybe broadchurch will do same ending just spread over 3 seasons?!

Justagirl r u in the UK? I can't find season 3 started anywhere!
Title: Re: What's your favorite TV show right now?
Post by: MooseMom on July 27, 2015, 01:53:04 PM
Oh wow, lainiepop...that IS a very different ending!!!

I know that a lot of UK peeps who liked Broadchurch season 1 didn't like S2 so much.  I think that might be because the show changed really from a murder mystery to a courtroom drama, and I happen to like both.  Also, S2 focused on how a small, tightly knit community can turn on itself in the face of such a terrible crime committed by one of its own.  I personally hope that S3 will show that the dad DID do it and that the story will become about how Broadchurch as a whole and the families in particular can or cannot come to terms with it.

OR, maybe the dad (who I think did do it) will be found not guilty because the evidence has been so compromised, and he/Broadchurch/the families will have to deal with THAT!

I enjoy at the moment some of the 1959-1963 TV-series "The Untouchables"... (courtesy of youtube)
Based on the memoir of the same name by Eliot Ness and Oscar Fraley, it fictionalized Ness' experiences as a Prohibition agent,
fighting crime in Chicago in the 1930s with the help of a special team of agents handpicked for their courage,
moral character and incorruptibility, nicknamed "The Untouchables".
The acting by Robert Stack and all the other actors is very impressive ...

I loved that series! I also liked the movie version with Kevin Costner, Sean Connery (he's one of my faves) and Robert De Niro (another one of my favorites). However, the movie was directed by Brian De Palma and his movies are known to be very explicit and violent, so I warn people...

Thank you PrimeTimer, I shall look into it on youtube and I shall be careful because of your kind warning ...
... One of the reasons why some of "The Untouchables" are so very interesting to watch,
is because lots of thinking has gone into how to approach every single challenge ...
... and the series gives the "onlooker" a good chance to follow the very clever thinking-process ...
Thanks again and best wishes from Kristina. :grouphug;

Buh bye, Kelly!

The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes 1970 complete full movie in English 1 hour 53 min (courtesy of youtube)
with (one of my favourite actors) Robert Graham Stephens.
I mention this film, because it is one of the very few and rare productions,
where "Sherlock Holmes" does not appear with a touch of superciliousness and arrogance ...

I've just finished Narcos on Netflix and have the finale yet to see of The Bridge (the original Danish version).

I'm loving The Knick; there are so many good shows on right now.  We have so many on our DVR queue.  We haven't even started Fargo!  One of our local PBS stations shows foreign TV series, and we're watching Unit One (Danish) and Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries.  We also haven't started the most recent Orphan Black season.  So much to watch, so little time.

I like to watch super hero shows...so I watch all of the ones on CW
The walking dead
Wrestling
a few space shows out there.
Sometimes I'll even watch a cheap syfy show.

I don't like this new style of only making about 10 episodes per season then cramming another show right behind it.

One of my all-time favourite movie-films (on DVD) is : Follow the Sun, the 1951 biographical film of the life of golf legend Ben Hogan (August 13, 1912 Ė July 25, 1997). It stars Glenn Ford as Ben Hogan and Anne Baxter as his wife. Many golfers and sports figures of the day appear in the movie as well.
In Fort Worth, Texas, Ben Hogan (Glenn Ford) works as a golf caddy to help support his family. He romances and marries Valerie Fox (Anne Baxter), then, with her support, decides to become a professional golfer. At first, Hogan has very little success, but he gradually improves. Meanwhile, the Hogans become friends with Chuck Williams (Dennis O'Keefe), a popular fellow pro. After serving in the military for World Disaster II, Hogan returns to golfing and eventually becomes a top player. However, he acquires an image of a robotic, cold competitor, because the watching crowds and analyzing newspaper articles make him feel uncomfortable to play his golf and so he tries very hard to concentrate on his golf and that's how it came that in the press he was called "The Texas Iceberg"...
... After winning a tournament (beating Williams), Hogan became very seriously injured in a horrific car accident. Doctors hold out little hope for him ever recovering or even walking, let alone golfing again. But, during his convalescence, Hogan is amazed and grateful by the outpouring of regard for him from his fans and it inspires him greatly... Through sheer determination and the help of his wife and his fans, he recovers and goes on to win the 1950 US Open Golf Championship to become one of the greatest golfers of his time.
... With hardly anything going for him, except his sheer determination, Ben Hogan demonstrates, how to approach the impossible and overcome all sorts of obstacles ...  and whenever I feel a little "down", I watch again this film as a sort of "medicine" to feel encouraged and continue with my own efforts as best as I can.

My only MUST WATCH RELIGIOUSLY show is The Late Show w/Stephen Colbert

I like all flavors of NCIS, and Criminal Minds, though I have a feeling that Beyond Borders has been canned.
Bull, the new Michael Weatherly show is pretty good.
Amazing Race Canada has just started, I think it's in in 3rd or 4th episode.  I also watch the American version when it's on.
I've been DVRing Still Star Crossed and Salvation.  I like SSC, but I haven't started Salvation yet.

I like to watch people cook, so I tend to watch a lot of Food Network, especially on weekends.  I like the Pioneer Woman, Chopped, and anything Guy Fieri or Rachel Ray is involved with.  I also tend to watch the different flavors of Say Yes to the Dress, though only cuz my mom is watching it. *L*

My Netfix shows are House of Cards, Stranger Things, all flavors of Star Trek, the Dragons series (I think the last few seasons are called Race to the Edge). I also watched Agatha Christie's Poirot on Netflix.  I remember watching those years ago on A&E.  I watched The Crown, which isn't too bad.  Lately, though, I've been mostly watching cartoons and kids shows while in dialysis.

Oh, can't forget Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy.  I record Jeopardy on the Seattle channel, because the Boston channel will prempt it with some kind of football show.  I hate football.  The Boston CBS is all New England Patriots.  I understand covering the local team, but even when it's not football season, at least one story on the local news involves the Patriots.  It's annoying as.. well.. you know *L*

Totally Enjoying King Julian (EXCILED) on Netflix, Dreamworks genius and you wonder what the writers are smoking, so many nifty references to other films, genres and the odd healthy innuendo!

I power-watched House of Cards, which was really good. I have never seen The Wire so may get that from Netflix.
I also heard Once Upon A Time is addicting.
Any other recommendations?

I'm looking forward to MacGyver Season 2. This is the new MacGyver with Lucas Till and George Eads! I have already seen the original series and I am wondering if Richard Dean Anderson will make an appearance in this one!

For me its still got to be Dr Who

OK, that makes you the most intelligent person on this board :)

However since Dr Who is not on at the moment (except repeats, there are always repeats showing somewhere). The best show on TV at the moment is Lucifer (Fox in the US, Amazon TV in the UK). For those who have never seen it, the slightly mad plot line is: Satan gets bored with running Hell, so he moves to LA where he opens a nightclub (as you do). One of his favourite singers gets murdered, so he teams up with a female detective (who once stared in a soft porn {very soft porn} teen comedy) to catch the killer. He finds he enjoys this (misses "punishing" bad people) so becomes the porn star cop's unofficial partner. Oh yeah, and the devil has a psychiatrist too (he has moved to LA, after all).

Umm, when I said "Slightly mad plot", perhaps I should have left out the word "slightly".

It can occasionally be slightly blasphemous (for example season two featured God's ex-wife) but if you can live with that it does occasionally make good points about the religion too. And it is a very good show.

On my last visit to the UK, I binge watched "People Just Do Nothing", and I know no one else who has seen it other than the one friend who recommended it to me.  I tried so hard to explain it to my husband but utterly failed, and he very kindly bought the DVD set for me.  I couldn't believe that it's available on NTSC format!  I was so pleasantly surprised.

Netflix has just released the final season of W1A, which is a parody of the BBC (W1A being the post code for Broadcasting House).  It stars Hugh Bonneville, who was Lord Crawley in Downton Abbey.

We're also watching Vera on Netflix; we're halfway through season 4.

Looking forward to the new season of Peaky Blinders.

Almost through watching Ken Burns' Vietnam War.

Just saw a pilot for a TV show with a mad plotline. The actual series has not started yet, they put out the pilot as a sort of teaser advert for the main series. The plotline is: Jean Claude Van Damme was not really an actor (if you have seen any of his films, that much rings true). His films were really a cover story. In truth he was a "dark ops" type special agent. Location shoots were arranged to get him wherever the mission needed him to be. But eventually he got a bit too old for that life and retired.

Then a chance meeting with his on set hair designer from the old days reminds him that he really loves her. To get back in her life he returns to his old boss and gets his job as a special agent back. Trouble is, he is still a bit passed his best, and not really up to new missions.

Jean Claude Van Damme plays himself, brave, particularly as he plays himself as a bit of an idiot. It is no award winner, but funny in places, especially if you are old enough (and had lowbrow taste enough) to have watched Jean Claude Van Damme's movies in the 1980s, so that you get the in jokes. Will probably end up as one of those shows that I watch occasionally, when I have nothing else to do, but don't go out of my way to see.

Just seen something on TV that I never thought I'd see, a comedian that I thought "went too far". I'll not quote the joke because British TV allows a lot more than American TV, and this is probably not the place for stuff like this, but the comedian was describing his sex life with his wife, it was very funny material, and I was laughing, but as he described one particular messy act I suddenly realized "I don't want to hear this". And by the look on the audiences faces, they did not either.

Weee......Got Castle back. I am watching it on Amazon TV, they tend to charge (the equivalent of about $2.50 per episode) for the first year after broadcast, then give it free. Being tight I never pay, always wait (and even if I did, $2.50 per episode is far too expensive, cheaper to buy the series on DVD). This worked up to season six, but season seven did not go down in price to "free" when expected. So I waited. Then they started charging for seasons one to six too, so I assumed we would never get the last two seasons free (although I did not know they would be the last two seasons back then, there were still plans for season nine) and gave up on the show. Then a couple of days back I noticed that season one was free again, checked the others, and found that all episodes in all eight seasons are free.

So now I am at last catching up on the last two seasons of Castle.

(The day I discovered that the last two seasons were now free was my birthday. Do you think they did it as a birthday present for me? :) )

I'm watching the second season of "Occupied" on Netflix.  It's a Norwegian tv series set in the near future.

The PM of Norway has decided to end Norway's oil and gas industry and replace it with mining and processing a new form of energy, thus helping the environment.  Well, the EU doesn't like this at all, so they "invite" the Russians to "temporarily occupy" Norway with a view of maintaining Norway's oil and gas fields.

I really like it because when I was younger, I worked in London with a reinsurance broker for energy underwriters at Lloyd's of London, so I saw firsthand how big Norway's oil and gas facilities and markets are.  I have friends and colleagues still in Oslo.  I was there just a few months ago, and as a part of my tourist-y agenda, I visited City Hall (that's where the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony is held each year).  So imagine my surprise when I saw in the tv show that City Hall had been commandeered as Russian HQ.

And then when parts of Oslo started blowing up (in the series), it was really creepy!

So, if you have Netflix, I recommend this series.

We're also watching Jessica Jones, but I also like my half hour comedies like Modern Family and blackish.

We watched Roseanne the other night and loved it!

That's a really good show.  I was actually sorry to see it end.  There is a spinoff to it called "The Good Fight" which is also very good, and in it's second season.  Unfortunately, in the US, it's only available on CBS All Access, but here in Canada, it plays on the Women's Network.  You can probably check the Googles to see if it's available anywhere else.

I've started watching a new show, called Rise, about a troupe of high school theatre students.  It has a very Dead Poets Society feel to it

Not so much "watching TV" as "listening to the radio". We still have a couple of radio stations that feature "proper" radio shows (drama, soaps, comedy, panel games, news, current affairs, etc.) and I was listening to a panel game show called "Just A Minute" where contestants have to speak for a minute on a subject without deviating from the subject, hesitating (pausing), or repeating any words except those in the subject. The show has run for over 50 years with the same presenter (Nicholas Parsons) who, in 50 years has never missed an episode. There have also been three attempts to run it on television, one running for several seasons, and he presented every single episode on television too. Today, for the first time in over fifty years, he missed an episode, one of the regular panelists stood in for him.

I am thinking that with 50+ years unbroken record, the producers would have rather skipped a recording or two instead of breaking that record, so I would guess Nicholas Parsons is considering retiring, which would pretty much be the end of an era, but he is 94 years old, so I guess he is overdue for a rest.

Hello Paul,
thanks for the information about Nicholas Parsons. I have admired his wonderful acting skills for many years, especially in some of his films i.e. "Brothers in Law" together with some other favourites like Terry Thomas, Ian Carmichael and Richard Attenborough. .. and another favourite film comes to mind like "Too many Crooks", again with Terry Thomas and, not to forget one of the ultimate favourite films: "Carry On Regardless"...

After "Just A Minute" and "Sale Of The Century", the thing I most remember him for is Dr Who.

As to the films you mention: I used to love it when films of that era (both British and American) were shown on TV weekend afternoons. I miss the old stuff, but am too mean to pay £15.99 for the DVDs.

Hello Paul, I agree: £15.99 is a bit expensive for one DVD. But sometimes they are on offer and hopefully there is some luck coming along. Fingers crossed !
Many years ago I have taken some Videos of favourite films and all was well until the day when we needed a new Video-DVD-recorder and unfortunately this new Video-DVD-recorder does not "accept" the Videos I have recorded ages ago, it only "accepts" the bought Video-films.
So, with my old "self-made" Videos, it shows absolutely nothing on the screen, whereas with the bought Video-films it actually shows the film. I have been wondering whether that is a common problem with self-recorded Videos and what could be done about it?
Many thanks from Kristina. :grouphug;

My solution to the video problem was that when the popularity of videos died and you could pick up video recorders for £5 to £10 at boot fairs, I bought several to stock up, so that when one broke down I could throw it away and unpack the next one. Video recorders will play any type of tape, so no problem there. And it seems like a sound investment, because I have noticed that the price of second hand video recorders is shooting up, presumably because although demand is very low, supply has got even lower.

As to your problem that the DVD/video machine only plays pre-recorded videos, are your home recorded ones on a slow speed (e.g. six hours on a three hour tape)? Because that is the only way I can see that happening. A pre-recorded video tape has an identical signal to a home recorded one. There is no reason one should work and not the other. It is like saying "I have a car that works perfectly when blonde people drive it, but it refuses to start if redheads get behind the wheel."

Just started watching 'Cloack and dagger' on Amazon Prime. After 4 episodes I still don't get it, but it's well made, and Now I need to know how it ends. But Hubby starts early tomorrow and than there's the World Cup too..............

Just started watching 'Cloack and dagger' on Amazon Prime. After 4 episodes I still don't get it, but it's well made, and Now I need to know how it ends.

I'm up to episode 3 of Cloak and Dagger, it is really, really, slow. Usually my complaint about modern movies is "too much action, not enough plot", but this show has no plot whatsoever. Three episodes in, and we are up to where they should have been ten to fifteen minutes into episode one. I'm guessing they are basing it on a short run comic series (six or eight issues) and trying to spread that over five seasons of twenty two episodes.

and than there's the World Cup too..............

Did you see today's match? (If not don't read on, spoiler alert.) I know England were playing at their best, but Panama stil have to be really, really bad to loose to us by six to one. And they played dirty, so to loose six to one while cheating - really really really bad players!

I'm watching the World Cup!  The England v Panama match started a bit too early for me, but I dragged myself out of bed to check the score in the second half.  When I saw it was already 5-0, I went back to bed.  I've seen the highlights, and yes, Panama did make a meal out of it.

It's too bad because all of the teams that have already been eliminated have been non-European.  That's kind of a shame, really.

I've been watching more football than regular TV!  Football all day long, and then the Match of the Day type programs in the evening.  Sporting heaven! :yahoo;

I am curious to see what will come of what happened during Serbia/Switzerland on Friday.  Apparently after two of the Swiss players tackled the Serbian player near the end of the game, they made hand gestures that approximated the eagle symbol on the Albanian flag.  Serbia is up in arms as the World Cup is supposed to be politically neutral AND they got fined 8500 euros for spectators waving a WWII flag during the match vs Costa Rica.
Title: Re: What's your favorite TV show right now?

I saw that match.  Both goalscorers (Shaqiri and Xhaka) made the gesture when they scored, not during a tackle.  Shaqiri's goal was in the 90th minute!   I've seen both of those players play in the English Premier League, but I've never seen them use that gesture until the match against Serbia.  They may be banned for the final match of the group stage against Costa Rica if FIFA finds they've used "provocative" gestures.

On the other side, the entire Serbian FA is under investigation for their fans' behavior AND because of comments made by their manager, ie, that because the ref didn't award a penalty (and the ref should have, to be fair), he should be put on trial in The Hague for war crimes!

The World Cup IS supposed to be politically neutral (but it rarely is)!  That's why all of these people are under investigation!

Hello cattlekid and MooseMom,
... in the "old days" I also watched football and especially the World Cup and I thought it very entertaining. But these days I am not too sure any more, because all professional players are multimillionaires many times over and because of that, they don't appear to really bother that much about playing good entertaining football any more. I haven't really been able to detect the "old" passion for football any longer ... and it seems, that the multi millions in players salaries have slowly taken away the real passionate love for football and the urgent "need to win this game"  ... what do you think?

P.S. I do hope my comment does not come over as negative, but this are my honest feelings about the development of football these days and I do hope it is not as bad as I think it might be ...

Kristina, as someone who has loved all kinds of sports for decades, I certainly see your point.  I have grown weary of the multi-millionaire players and owners and how it is rare to find passion for the game where money is spent and earned so freely.

That said, this is exactly why I love the World Cup.  You have the huge stars who earn boatloads of cash with their club teams, yet here they are, representing their countries who are struggling on the world stage.  The World Cup showcases players we've never seen before playing for nations outside of the big European powerhouses.  There is a universal appeal for rooting for the underdog.  While I lived in England, there was of course loads of support for the England national team, but there was ALWAYS a great swell of support for a "Cinderella" team, usually from one of the African nations.

You get a superstar like Messi who has been a pillar for his club, Barcelona, but in the World Cup, he can't even hit a penalty kick.  Each year he has the opportunity to get Barcelona to the Champions' League, but he gets the chance to win the World Cup with Argentina only every four years.  He's never won it, and he probably never will.

While in many ways, it IS all about the money, it is still possible to find intriguing and bittersweet and heroic and controversial and just play inspiring story lines.  Despite the money, these are human beings playing the game, and those human beings all come with fascinating stories of their own.

Many thanks MooseMom for your thorough thoughts, I am so glad to read your opinion, which is so different from mine and it is quite true what you say!
It is most interesting to read your mentioning that all these football-stars are practically in the same boat, when they play for the World Cup and I like your way to watch the World Cup and see the human side of it and the great support for the "Cinderella" team... and I wish you great enjoyment and may your favourite team win ...
Thanks again and all the best wishes from Kristina... :grouphug;

Southgate (coach England) said before the championship started that that was the reason he would make sure that penalties would be the most focussed on in practise. Obviously paid of.

Tonight was France vs Belgium. Beautiful match, won by France.

And I should hope so, too!  Still, I don't want to see a penalty shootout tomorrow vs Croatia.

That WAS a good match today (or tonight, if you're in the UK).  Not much light between France and Belgium.  I suspected that the winner of that match will win the final, but gosh, you just never know.  That's why they play the game, right?

I'm also watching Wimbledon and am excited that Serena Williams has made the semifinals.  She has really been through the wars, and it has been nice to see her on court again.  Now, if only Andy Murray can recover in time for the US Open, I'll be happy.  I hear he's been joining Tim Henman in the BBC commentary booth.  That's hard for me to imagine.

England scored too soon.  LOL!

Croatia just had fresher legs in extra time, and England playing with 10 men didn't help.

But Gareth Southgate has put together a team that England should be proud of, a team that is young and that should be just growing stronger as the next international tournament (the Euros, I guess) approaches.  I'm really optimistic!

I'm still mourning the loss of "Lucifer".

You do that all the time in America. You create a brilliant TV show, then you cancel it. First it was "Haven", now it is "Lucifer".

In Britain we know how to run with a good series. We are soon to start a new season of (IMHO) the world's greatest ever TV show. A series that started in 1963.

Does anyone else here like "foreign" (non US) TV?  Anyone have any recommendations?

Our Arlington VA library system has a good collection of foreign movies (not TV) with new movies coming in throughout the month. You rarely will see the good movies on the shelves, as people I like my wife activity uses the holds system to get in the queu for popular DVDs.  The wait can be quite long for the forgien films as they might have only one DVD unless itís very popular.

On Amazon we enjoyed the three episode A Very British Scandal with Huge Grant. The first episode was a tad slow setting up the gay content and communicating the problems they encountered back when Buggery was a crime. After that it had more intrigue.

I recently caught up on the last season of This is Us.
Otherwise I mostly watch reruns of Frazier, Seinfeld, or Donít laugh- I will watch golden girls or Little house on the Prairie when I just need some background noise. . Or dumb reality shows like Chopped or House hunters.  .
I also watch reruns of I love Lucy while getting ready in the morning.
There really isnít much to watch. But I Look forward to Homeland coming back this winter.
Will have to check out some of the shows mentioned here.

Why would we laugh? Neither is a show I enjoy, but they were both hugely successful, so people like me must be in the minority.

Taste is a personal thing. What one person loves another hates, and vice versa. There is no reason to laugh at someone just because they like something that you do not.

(Except for people who think Star Trek is a better show than Dr Who. Those people are just plain insane!)

When I heard that Murphy Brown was being brought back, I couldn't wait, and I was not disappointed.

I loved the show as a kid, and thought it funny that it ticked off the Conservative govt at the time.

I love how they kept the running gag of Murphy not being able to keep an assistant and that they didn't write out the Jim Dial character, considering that the actor who plays him is in his 80s.

I am eagerly awaiting the second season.

I'm following so many different shows right now that it is difficult to finish any one series.

That said, I did finish "Jane the Virgin" which has been a bright spot on a bleak TV menu for some years now.

I'm also following HBO's "Years and Years" which is horrific on a whole different level.

I'm in Season 6 of "Orange is the New Black"; the final season 7 has just begun on Netflix.

Also on Netflix, we're watching "Dark", which is a pretty cool German show with time travel at the center of the plot.

I'm in the middle of Season 2 of "Big Little Lies" which I've liked more than I thought I would.  As brilliant as Meryl Streep has been in so many roles, her performance in BLL is her best work.  She's downright creepy.

It is really hard for me to find a free hour throughout the day to watch something on TV, but I do try to have some "me" time in the afternoon when it's too hot to get outdoors and work in the garden.

Summer season, rubbish and repeats on British TV, so I tend not to watch in the evening. During Dialysis I'm watching a Canadian cop show and a lot of quiz shows.

My favourite of the quiz shows is a show called Impossible. Like many shows it gives contestants a choice of three answers, with the twist is that one is correct, one is wrong, and one is impossible. EG "Which city in the USA is the nation's capital? A)Washington DC, B)New York, C) Vancouver." The correct answer is, of course A)Washington DC, the wrong answer is B)New York, the impossible answer is C) Vancouver, because the question states "Which city in the USA" and Vancouver isn't in the USA, it is in Canada.

If you get the correct answer, you win a point, get the wrong answer you don't. But pick the impossible answer and you are out of that game.

I enjoy it for two reasons. Firstly, I enjoy working out both the correct answer and the impossible answer (the actual questions are harder than the one I made up as an example) Secondly, the big prize is ten thousand pounds (about fourteen thousand dollars in good times), and if someone wins it, they don't get a cheque or a pile of paper money. They get ten thousand one pound coins. To give you some idea how big a load that is, throughout the show the money is displayed in a glass case, about two foot wide and ten or twelve foot high. If they win, the money comes tumbling out like a jackpot win from a gambolling machine, and the winner gets ecstatic. And I love watching them and thinking "Have you worked out how to get that home?"

(NOTE: this post was edited after Simon Dog replied, but it does not change his point, I was just correcting a typo that I saw in his quote from my post.)

(P.S. Anyone really, really bored and looking for something to do, can use this as a "spot the difference" puzzle. The script won't change the quote in SD's post, so if you are trying to kill time, "spot the difference".

Do you REALLY think it works that way?  My guess is they keep the coins for the next game and mail the check out in 3-6 months.  A former classmate was on Jeopardy and he was eventually paid - quite a few months later.   You would be amazed at the non-public stuff that is in appearance contracts for shows like that.

Taking home the cash as coins is about as real as those house hunting shows where the couple discusses and picks one of three house ..... which is actually one they already owned before filming started.

Spoilsport  :P

Actually I used to agree with you, but then the host came out and said that they really do give it in pound coins. And although I am not gullible enough to believe everything hosts say, there have been a hell of a lot of jackpot winners since the show started, and if he had been lying, Twitter and Facebook would have been awash with past winners calling him out. It wasn't. And I also doubt that the host would be stupid enough to say this if it were untrue, because he has been on TV long enough to know the career ruining media storm that might follow such a lie.

Just finished 3rd season of Ozark on Netflix. Some crazy plot twists for sure!
Now watching Chernobyl on HBO Max. Intense and incredible.
Watched a few episodes of Space Force. Some funny stuff, not sure if it's funny enough.
I might check out How to Get Away with Murder.

I've not seen Ozark but have heard lots of good things about it.  I'll get to it, eventually!

Chernobyl was very good, indeed.  I'm glad you're enjoying it.

I do like Space Force.  There is a goodness in it that I find appealing.  It's not high art, but is fun.

There are so many good things out there to watch and so little time to watch everything!

Hi MooseMom!  :waving;
I agree about Space Force. So topical right now, and silly.  :clap;

Hi, okarol!  I hope all is well with you and that no one in your family has the covid cooties.

Coincidentally, I've finished Space Force just last night, and again, there is a sweetness about the show that is comforting.  I do hope we will see a Season 2!  I suspect we will need lots of fun silliness sooner rather than later.

We are all good - super cautious in our self-quarantine bubble to keep Jenna and her kidney transplant safe. No contact with any outsiders until California numbers are greatly improved. xoxox
