Looks like the NFL is just as over-lawyered as usual. It's gotta hurt being a Lions fan. Quite a few of last year's playoff teams didn't looks so brilliant here in week 1. Maybe some new powers will emerge this season?

kitkatz, I don't blame you. I love B5 and have the whole DVD set. Truth be told, there are many times I'd rather watch that than the tedium that is engulfing the NFL. Too many rules, too many commercials. But this past weekend offered up some great stories. The NFL is rather like a soap opera...will Ochocinco and T.O. get along? Will Tom Brady father another baby? Is Michael Vick "rehabilitated"? Which head coach will be fired first?

It's a tough job, but someone has to be a LION's fan. I'm from Detroit, and have been an avid, lifetime supporter of the Lion's since I was a kid. You have to support your home town, even if they SUCK! :cheer:

YLGuy, I was hoping the Giants would prevail over the Colts, but they really had a rough night. Eli might have a tough night against the Bears' defense, and with Cutler and Mike Martz's new offense, the Bears are actually looking like an offensive force for once. The Bears' O-line is suspect, too, so it may come down to which QB gets better protection/runs the quickest!
Anyone care to comment on the Cowboys? I was the only one in our pool to pick the Bears in that game, so I came out looking mighty clever, but I just don't think the Cowboys are as good as the media would like them to be. I'm not sure what the problem is in Big D.
And the Saints. Everyone has been expecting more offensive fireworks, but that's not happening. Losing Reggie Bush is not going to restore their spark.

OK, I'll stick my head above the parapet on this one. I despise the Cowboys...always have and always will. Sorry to any Cowboy fans here (lookin' at you, Paul.Karen...), but it's just the way I was raised. My family had season tickets to the Oilers' games from the time they came into existance until I left for college (in 1975); I grew up in the Astrodome. My poor father was crushed when Bud Adams finally made good on his threat to move the team, and he died just a month before the first Texan game. He taught me my hatred for the 'boys, so I have no choice in the matter.
I think that the Texans are a better team right now, but on any given Sunday, it is not always the best team that wins. I know that the pundits have high hopes for the Texans, and with good reason, but it's still early days. I am waiting for Dallas to get it together. Glad the game is at Reliant.

Yeah, I knowChickenLittle, yesterday was a bad day all around. Texans v Cowboys was the nationally televised game, but up here in Chicagoland, we had to plow through Lions v Vikings. But tonight, well....yeah, the Pack v Bears; now, I don't use this word EVER, but it's gonna be AWESOME. I took the Packers in our football pool, but I'm hoping the Bears will win. They've played two mediocre teams so far, and this will be a big test for them.

As I was switching channels(there's on;y 3 and their all Mexican) I seen the rebroadcast of the game in Spanish. The problem is that I know very very limited Spanish. At least I seen the last 10 minutes of the game.

I am beginning to suspect that the refs are in some sort of a cabal whose raison d'etre is to screw the Lions. That team is jinxed. There always seems to be a flag thrown at the worst possible time for that team. It is bizarre.
That Bears/Giants game is gonna be such fun! I'm still not sure if the Bears are really a 4-0 team, and the Giants just have not looked very good this year. Another team that is a bit mysterious is the Saints...they do keep winning, but barely. They don't look like the same team that won the Super Bowl.
Glad to see the Texans held their nerve and beat the Raiders. I remember two years ago when they lost to the Raiders in a game they had no business losing, and that cost them their first winning season.

Oh no....what happened to my Bears. NINE Sacks in the first half. MM you are right that them being a 4-0 team. I hope that Lovie is going to have to do something about that offense now.Well at least there no more unbeaten teams left. Lets see if there is any changes next week when they play the Panthers.

Oh, didn't the Bears look awful? The O-line is a huge problem...so many young players having to learn a Mike Martz offense. I don't know why he kept calling plays that consistently put Cutler at risk. Is there no place for the run in his offense? I think Cutler was concussed way before the end of the half.
I wasn't particularly impressed with NYG, either...neither team showed me anything special. My husband remarked that it looked like a circus out there. Next week should be interesting because the Bears play so-far hapless Carolina, and the Texans go to NJ to play the Giants. The Texans allowed an awful lot of points lately.
And Jacksonville beat the Colts? What an ending to THAT game! Wish I had watched that one.

Well if the Bears don;t something the Panthers are going to win next week. I hope the Texans beat the Giants and as for the 'Boys well they can lose all their games.. As for the cubs well......Lets just say I am a 'glad Bartman stuck his glove out' kind of person. To many arrogant cubs fans in the family and friends.

I actualy cheered for Donavan Mcnab yesterday. Never dreamed that day would come.
I am glad the Redskins beat the Eagles. I can only imagine many eagles were thinking why did we trade donavan???

I'm not real sure what to think about Michael Vick. My stepson hates him because of what he did, and that's a viewpoint I understand. But I like to think that people can be redeemed and can benefit from a second chance. I hope that he will come back quickly from his injury. It was nice to see him and McNabb together before the game.

The Bleacher Report dropped the Bears rating from 1 to 10 because of the OL. MM, at least the Texans went from 8th to 7th and the 'Boys stood at 16th.

Hey chickenlittle, I've just heard that the Texans signed Mark Anderson who was let go from the Bears just a few days ago. He was awful; the Bears have a history of getting rid of people that become really good with a new team, so maybe Anderson will continue that tradition! I'm not sure how well Cedric Benson is doing this year, though; I haven't heard.

Jeez, I really don't know what to think about the Texans. I read a bit about the game, and I don't see how this team beat the Colts in the season opener. They are such an up and down team. You never know which team is gonna show up.
I bet Jerry Jones isn't a happy bunny today. Here he is thinking the Cowboys are gonna be in the Super Bowl so that he can have a big party there in Dallas, but I dunno about that. Unfortunately, I am so NOT a Titans fan, not after Bud Adams took the Oilers away, so I couldn't be quite as happy about a Dallas loss as I should have been.
I didn't see the Bears' game but I heard about Todd Collins' bad day. I wonder if he will still have a job by the end of the week.

Bears are ranked 5th(still holding on to the top five so far) at 4-1
Green Bay are ranked 8th at 3-2
Vikings are ranked 25 at 1-3
Detroit Lions are ranked 28 at 1-4. Is Brett Favre playing or isdoes he have his hands full.
Finally
In Texas the Texans are ranked 10th at 3-2. At least they're in the top 10
Dallas Cowgirls(ooops Cowboys ;D) are ranked way way back there in the bottpm 5th at 26th place for a 1-3 record

I think if it looks like it is being done on purpose fines need to be imposed. I like hard hitting football but nobody likes someone being injured, seriously injured.
Next Monday night the Giants(4-2) take on the Cowboys(1-4). The odds makers are favoring the Cowboys. What do you think about that?

Its hard to watch the cowboys when they are playing like this.
They are moving the ball last week almost 500 yards offense and a loss. Then sunday close again but no win. On top of that cablevision here in Jersey has a totaly blackout on channel 5 (fox) so we cant see any games nor the MLB playoffs.
The cowboys need a NEW COACH and Jerry Jones needs to stay off the field and live behind the scenes. They are playing like a new team which if that were the case would be understandable. But these guys have been together and should be playing like that.
Not every year can be a winniing year. So hopefully we will make some changes and start to get some wins. Giants Dallas is always a good game hopefully the blackout will be over and i can watch it.

$75,000 (James Harrison) and $50,000 (Brandon Meriweather and Dunta Robinson) are pretty hefty fines. They did say suspensions were next.

I hope you are right because this past weekend was almost painful to watch. It's going to be interesting to see how the refs identify and police the new rule. I am assuming that there will be official reviews?

I know this is off the topic of football but does anybody think that the Texas Rangers will advance to the World Series. Although I am a White Sox fan I am rooting for the Rangers. Despite their loss yesterday they are 3 games to 2. Just one more game :pray;

I am a Mets fan so I am not too big on the Yankees. My kids are though. I am not thrilled about the Rangers as I hate George W and he is a big fan as he used to be a part owner. I just want the SF Giants to beat the Phillies.

When I was young oh so long ago, my family had season tickets for the Oilers. At halftime, there was always a performance by a local high school marching band and the drill squad. On one particular occasion, the family of one of the drill squad (all female squad) had all come to the game expressly to see their daughter perform, and they were very proud. I could hear them talking in the seats behind us. A few rows behind THEM, a couple of guys who had had too many brewskis started hooting and hollering and slobbering over their daughter and her drill squad teammates, and it became very uncomfortable, especially for her dad. So ever since then, I've not really liked the whole cheerleader thing, but then again, being a lady myself, they don't do much for me. But so many women are NFL fans now, and I don't see why teams still have cheerleaders if they are "entertaining" only half of the crowd. But that's just me being a wet weekend, I guess.

OK, I cannot promise to ever watch a game (aside from half-watching the super bowl) but I am now an official Giants fan. I'll probably burst in here randomly to shout YAY GIANTS!!!!! and since I literally give no notice to football, it will probably be at some clueless time, like mid-April. You all stand warned! :rofl;

YLGuy, that's nice to know, but I have a confession to make. I am not a fan of the Giants. Well, to be more accurate, I am not a fan of Eli Manning because I remember how he royally snubbed the Chargers and refused to be drafted by them. That didn't endear me to the whole Manning clan, it must be said, and I had always remembered Archie with fondness because I saw him play many times when he was with the Saints. But I doubt that they take much notice of my tsk-tsking. :rofl;
The Bears got rid of the "Honey Bears" some time ago, thank goodness. The Oilers had the "Derrick Dolls", and I hated it...it seemed so pointless. Which other NLF teams don't have cheerleaders...anyone know?

Yes, he did snub the Chargers. I think Archie had a lot to do with that choice. He now has a Superbowl ring to show for it (MVP) so you have to admit that the decision worked out for him. If you remember the first year or two Charger fans said that they were happy that he did that as they preferred Rivers.

I am glad that YLGuy put some sense into you. Under no circumstances could even you have the thought going on in your head(except if the Bears were heading into the playoffs and one of the NFC North teams was tied with them and that team was playing the 'Boys then MAYBE)

Bears v 'Skins...geez, no one wanted to win that game. We giggled through the whole thing. It was just too weird. I hope the Bears aren't gonna fob off the Bills because they very nearly beat Baltimore today. And I bet les bon temps ne roulez pas in New Orleans coz de Browns done beat dem Saints.

Not NFL but it is football. My son's team played a Pop Warner playoff game today. The team they played won all of Orange County and all of the Western States Conference last year. They went to Florida to play for the National Championship. They lost last year. Earlier this year they beat my son's team 28-0.
My son's team scored first and it was 8-0. The boys did a GREAT job. At the be4ginning of the 4th quarter the game was tied 8-8. It was really bad. The ref's flagged my son's team 7 times and had not thrown 1 flag against their opponents who had flagrant holding, PI and facemasks. My son's team lost as the other team scored twice. It was a great game. I really wish the ref's were not so openly bias and let the boys win or lose. My son's team was seeded 8th and the other team is seeded 1st. The parents of the other team bought plane tix to Florida weeks ago which I think is pretty cocky. They almost had to eat those tix.

I guess I have been seeing a lot of NYG games because everytime I turn around, I see Kevin Gilbride. I actually have a Kevin Gilbride kidney story that may be of some interest to you. Years ago when he was the Oilers' offensive coordinator (during the Warren Moon run and shoot era, along with Buddy Ryan as d coordinator), one of the offensive linemen had an offseason job as a life insurance salesman. He convinced Kilbride to buy a policy, but first Kilbride had to have a physical. They discovered that one of his kidneys was cancerous. It was removed, and since the cancer had not spread past the kidney, he was OK. He had had no symptoms, so he was lucky it was caught. I loved the run and shoot...
The Giants very nearly lost that game...I think they took their foot off of the accelerator there at the end. Don't know what's gonna happen to the 'Boys because Kitna looked disastrous.

Bears are at in its bye week afer they stunk up the feild last week, I am not giiving up on them as yet maybe with this week off they can regroup for next Sunday when they go play the Bills I hope they do something with Cutler.

Viking are at 23rd with a 2-4 record. Oh Oh I think Brett Favre is out for the season with 2 fractures from last weeks game against Green Bay. Maybe he can retire at last.

Oh man, the Cowboys suffered the ultimate humiliation. I was flipping between their game and the Packers, and toward the end when I flipped back to the Cowboys, the network had already bumped them off and put on the Buffalo/KC game that went into overtime. OUCH!
I'm sitting here watching Favre, and you may hate the whole saga, but you have to give it to him...the man's a football stud. Forty one years old, broken bones in his ankle yet he not only STARTS at QB but nearly finishes the whole game before getting knocked out in the fouth quarter. They're carting him off now, and he is not looking good at all. I suspect his jaw is broken.
I will be absolutely glued to my seat watching Steelers v Saints. Not a fan of Big Ben, but am also tired of the whole Saints saga. I don't think they are that good this year.
Very surprised that the Chargers are beating the Titans. I hate the Titans...I hate Bud Adams. And I'm not a VY van, either. He thought he was entitled to be the Texans' QB for whatever reason. Houston needed beefing up on D and STILL DO. Don't see them beating the Colts, unfortunately. Very schizophrenic team, the Texans.

O Boswife, I will add the Chargers in next weeks ratings. WOW, Farve played today with broken ankle and all, now that a football player. Some fans of football fans may that is pretty dumb playing hurt. I wonder if He would play the next game with a broken jaw, would He mumble plays during the game. I think he's gotta go with Cutler. Cutler didn't look too sharp last week, but he'll have had a bye week to get fitter after his concussion. Plus, the Bears mortaged the franchise to get him, so you've got to use him. He's very talented, but he does need more protection from the O line. Also, they are playing the Bills, a relatively weak team, so it would be a good opportunity for Cutler to get in there and get sharper.

You probably know by now that he was picked up by the Titans; the Bears passed on him.
I'm not entirely sure why the Vikings let him go, but there were two things that were prevalent in the news. One was that he didn't seem to work very hard; I saw a play where Moss didn't seem to try to get to a long pass he probably could have caught. It really did look like he slowed up. But when I saw it in real time, I really thought that he pulled up because he was expecting to get a pass interference call against the defender. And then in the postgame press conference, he was waxing rather lyrically over the Pats and how he really missed his ex-teammates. Childress probably didn't like that too much. But I don't know...sports talk is like a guy's version of The View! Lots of gossip and yakking. :rofl;

I don't know about NYC, but here in Chicagoland, there's a sportstalk duo on The Score whose show is in the afternoon, and I think there is more giggling than there is insight. It's really funny. I find myself giggling, too. What I find particularly fascinating is the inordinate amount of time guys spend talkiing about how different players/coaches express emotion on the field, in interviews, in press conferences, in private, in public, in the locker room, etc. There's quite a lot of psychoanalysis going on in sports talk...just like, uh, on The View.

Oh, alright. I'll confess. I don't do fantasy football, but I am in a pool with 5 other people. I'm tied for third place so far. Very average. I've learned not to put too much effort into it as guessing seems to be as good as any method of picking a winner. Sometimes I pick the team that has the cutest QB. I always pick the Cardinals because I love love love Larry Fitzgerald, and I always pick against the Cowboys because I think Tony Romo dumping Jessica Simpson via text message was just rotten (along with the 1000 other reasons I am not a Cowboys fan).

I got the biggest shock last night. As I was watching the Cowweenies and listening to the national TV commentary (Chris Collinsworth and the other guy), I experienced a sensation that I had never felt before...a twinge of sympathy for the Cowboys. I know, I know, I know...I should be ashamed, but there you are. As the commentators continued to use words like "catastrophic" and "disastrous" and "embarrassing", I was horrified to feel just a tiny bit sad for some of those players. Look in their faces, and you could see hopelessness. They looked like they'd just been told they had to start dialysis. ::)

Well, I told my old tech on Friday that I thought this might happen. The Cowboys are now playing for their jobs. They are still very much in last place and the Giants are still in first place. Even if the Eagles win tomorrow night they will be tied for first. I do not know why the Giants did not put any pressure on their back up QB.

Da Bears went from 11th to 8th place at a 7-3 record. I am glad the beat Miami last Sunday. They are going to have a difficult time with Eagles(7-3) on Sunday. I hope they have a good chance to beat them since they are playing at home. Do you think that if the Bears win on Sunday that they might have a chance to go to the Superbowl(or least get into the playoffs? Well at least their no. 2 in blocking the rush.
Packers are right behind in 9th place with a 7-3 record and they are playing the Falcons(8-2). OH OH doesn't look good for the Packers. Those living behind the Cheddar Curtain will be doing a lot of grimacing on Sunday.
Vikings are in 25th place with a 3-7 record. Brett Favre said he wants to play until He's fifty.
Lions are in 30th place with a 2-8 record. nuthin' more to say on this team although they play the Patriots next.
Steelers are at 7th place with a 7-3 record. What happened to them in the past few weeks? They play the Bills.
Texans are 21 place at a 4-6 record and they play the Titans next Sunday.
Finally it the 49ers at 28th place and 3-7 record. I hope that they win most of their remaining games, I hate to see Mike Singletary get booted out. I hope if they do let him go that the Bears would hire 'Samurai' Mike in some kind of capacity.

Well, next week the Texans play the Ravens, and that's the last team they play who is in the postseason hunt. Dallas plays the Eagles twice and could do some real damage to them.

OK, another NFL weekend is here, and I suspect that the weather may play a part in some games. The Pats are in town to play Chicago, and the weather forecast here in Chi-town is brutal. High...20 degrees. Winds predicted to be 40 mph, coming straight down Lake Michigan from the frozen tundra. Both are cold weather teams so neither will have a clear advantage. I will be giving both teams my considered opinions from the comfort of my warm chair.

I would say the Giants should have no problem with the ViQueens but I think they have beat the Giants the last 4 meetings. The best I can say about another NFC East game is I hope the Eagles lose.

I've been reading on the Trib that the turf in Soldiers field is all messed up. The Bears are used of playing on that surface so maybe they might have a slim advantage over the Pats. They are both cold weather teams so, yeah, no one has an advantage there.
My favorite player is Urlacher and a distant second is Brett Farve. OMG did I type that.

Yeah, the turf is abominable. As you know, the stadium is owned by the Park District, and they are loathe to spend the money to put down new turf. Not only that, but all of the high schools have their championship games there, and that doesn't help the situation.

Actually my persons were players, my first person is Mike Singletary, coach of the 49ers, and second is John Elway, former QB of the Denver Broncos. I would follow Elway and the Broncs when I couldn't watch the Bears. He knew his limit after he won the 2 superbowls and retired. Wasn't he in the recent news talking to the Bronc;s owner about some position on the team management.

It always makes me wince when a bad play by one person, especially a rookie, hands the other team the win. Dodge must be feeling horrible. Well, it makes the rest of the games just that much more important and potentially exciting.
However, the Cowboys pulled out a win which was not what I wanted to see. It's been a generally sucky day. ::)

YLGuy what do you think the Giants playoff chances with 2 important games coming up. I read abd heard that the Packers may have a chance of getting a wildcard berth depending on what happens. I was a Houston Oiler fan for their entire existence, and I remember the Warren Moon days of the run-and-shoot. Man, that was some nice looking football. Anyway, back then it was such a big deal that there was actually a black QB in the NFL. It just struck me that in tonight's game, both QBs were black, and no one said a word, no one cared, no one thought it was odd enough that comment was warranted. I know there have probably been many games in the past several years where both qbs were black, but I didn't really think about it until tonight, I don't know why. But isn't it great? Now, once we start letting the ladies play.... :clap; Sorta like Sally Ride, the first American woman to go into space. Now you see women all over the place in space, and no one comments, no one cares, it's no big deal. That's great, too.

Yup, the Giants ended 10-6 and did not make the playoffs. They truly gave it away leading the league in turnovers. That will drive any coach crazy but I know that must have killed Coughlin. He helped Tiki with that. Made him carry the ball high and tight. I believe someone quoted Coughlin as saying, "imagine how we would have done with half the turnovers?" Ya, just imagine. lol

That said, yes, I will be rooting for the losingest team in the 2011 NFL playoffs on Saturday - The SEAHAWKS!!!! You know what they say about ol' Qwest Field here in Seattle - it's the loudest nest in the NFL!!! I didn't watch Sunday's game, but I heard on the radio it was one of the LOUDEST games in the stadium's short history, so I expect nothing less come Saturday! There have been some teams that come to play here that practice with loud cheering noises to help their team prepare. The 12th Man LIVES ON!!!!!

My best guess is that the Falcons are going to represent the NFC. I think that the Steelers and the Patriots will battle for the AFC. If I was forced to guess which one will win I would have to lean towards Brady.

Whoever they play in the divisional championship will have an QB on IR or some such thing, just you watch. Oh, what a tremendous game! They must be sick in NOLA! I really thought the Seahawks would blow it...too many 3 and outs in the last quarter, but they hung on for dear life and pulled off one amazing upset! Boy, was that fun to watch!! Congrats!!

I can tell you that those losses were pretty big ones! But - we (Seahawks) did beat "Da Bearz" in the regular season, Week 6, 23-20. Well, I DO have my Seahawks blanket that I actually brought to the bar with me last week! Hey, it worked!
I may be going to the same place to watch this game. We have a Boston's Pizza nearby, and they are opening early at 9am just for the game. It's a great place to watch a game, and they have good food. Who knows, maybe they'll offer a breakfast pizza?

We had a great day, thanks to this playoff game. We went to the natural history museum and saw a fascinating exhibit on amphibians - live ones. It was pretty empty. Then we went to the butterfly house. For long stretches of time, we were the only ones in there, which was especially nice because the butterfly house is tropical, and with winter clothes on, add in too many people and you start to feel panicky and claustrophobic. Then we came home, threw some nachos together, Gwyn ran round the corner for sour cream, and we sat down to watch the game, on tape, so we could skip the useless bits. We managed to (mostly) avoid scores throughout the day, although we did hear a 14-0 update at one point. It was so quiet in our neighbourhood, I thought for sure the Packers had lost. My son, who acts like he's been a football fan all his life, really enjoyed the game. Our younger boy stayed in his room to play on his computer.
In order to get 2for1 tickets to the amphibian exhibit, we had to wear Packers colors. We decided to really drive the point home (since we have none of their gear) by painting the G symbol on the kids' faces and spraying their hair green. Shower time!
I think we'll go sledding on Superbowl Sunday, or maybe to the ancient Egypt exhibit, employing the same strategy.
Gwyn is going to bring a load of questions into work tomorrow. There were calls that we really did not understand.

This is going to be a good super bowl I think. Bears didn't deserve to win the way they have played. They played bad last week with the Seahawks in the 2nd half. Pittsburg, that was a game in the second half. They didn't give up with the setbacks and pulled out to win.

Ironically, I think the owners might have preferred that the players' union stayed intact. Now that it has been decertified, the players can individually sue. Brady and Peyton Manning have already lawyered up. The owners may need that extra billion so that they can pay their own legal fees.

That's a good question. Yes, I probably would. Players don't seem to have much loyalty to teams these days. They go where the money is, and that's certainly fair enough. When your favorite player gets traded from your team, do you stop watching your team?
Many many years ago, I watched the Houston Gamblers when they were trying to set up an alternative summer football league. The QB was none other than Jim Kelly, and it was really fun to watch.
I can't escape the feeling that the players are sort of redundant. The success of the NFL seems to be grounded in the corporation of football, the culture, the merchandising, the cultivation of team loyalty as opposed to loyalty to a specific player, the TV rights and the incessant analysis. Not to mention the gambling!!! All of this could easily continue with "scabs" on the field. But that's just my opinion.

The draft is getting me excited for some football.
The Giants chose a CB, Prince Amukamara for their first pick. A defensive player, surprise, surprise. For their second round they chose Marvin
Austin, a defensive tackle. Their third round they chose a 5'9"wide receiver, Jerrel Jernigan. This is an interesting choice. Not only can he catch, he can run and throw too. He used to be a QB. I hope the Giants don't go to the wildcat offense.
We will have to wait to see who they pick in the 4th round. They do not have a 5th round pick but they have three 6th round picks and one 7th round pick.

4th round we picked up a huge kid. Offensive Tackle James Brewer. He is 6'8" 335. The notes say that he will probably put on another 15 pounds once he starts working out with the Giants. That is one big boy! We rounded out the draft with 2 linebackers, a safety and a running back.

I'm rather fond of redemption stories, so I am hoping that he will find a team if he is still good enough to play. I personally don't expect athletes to be role models (although cheating is unacceptable in my book), but I understand that other fans don't feel the same way. I just hope he gets rid of his guns. Hmmm...you can take guns into US National Parks, and in some states you can take them into church, so I'm not really sure that two years in prison for taking a gun into a nightclub is terribly consistent. But if that's the law, that's the law, and he should have known better.

Yeah, I have heard rumblings about an NBA lockout, but I admit to not knowing much about the issues. Right now, Wimbledon is the center of my sporting universe, so I won't care about any other sport until the fortnight is over.

I believe the Lions will have a really tough team this year! They have an outstanding couch in Jim Schwartz. He used to be Defensive Couch for the Titans, and we used to have some awesome Defensive's under him and the couch before him, Greg Williams. Of the two, I think Schwartz's is Brilliant!
They also got Kyle Vandenbosh from Tenn. Titans. That guy is GOOD. His motor never stops!
Now as for my team, the Titans! I think it will be a couple years to get use to the new couch! Mike Munchak. When Jeff Fisher left it was a shock, but as much as I will miss the Fish, I really believe it was time for a change! Time will prove whether it was the right thing to do!
I am glad that they released Vince Young! He definately has the talent, but whoever takes him, DO NOT BOO HIM when he messes up! He does not take kindly to that! The new pick QB, Jake Locker, seems pretty much a team player and leader, but we will see!!!!

lmunchkin, I'm going to be straight with you and warn you that I hate the Titans! I hate Bud Adams because he destroyed the Oilers and moved them to Tennessee. I had been attending Oilers' games since they started in the AFC; we had season tickets for years, and Bud Adams is the anti-Christ. :rofl;
I do, however, love Jeff Fisher; he was the Oiler's head coach in their last years in Houston. I wish him well.
Never did like Vince Young after he made it clear that he felt entitled to be drafted by the Texans just because he is a Houston native. He's talented but is also a bit of a head case, and after all of the flack the Texans took for drafting Mario Williams instead of VY, I figure the Texans got the best of that deal when all was said and done.
I used to watch Mike Munchak play; he has been with the franchise for decades! He's a great guy, a real football guy. He should do well for the Titans. Bud Adams doesn't deserve him. Boooooo! :rofl;

Yea I totally agree about Bud Adams! But Tenn has been wanting a team for years now and we were thrilled when we got one. I was not crazy about Oilers moving to here, but Texas wanted them gone, so Tenn saw the opportunity, and grabbed it! Bud Adam's will not be around for very long. I don't wish him harm, but I don't trust him either. I believe or I hope he will sell his team, and hopefully take it out of his family's hands.
VY is gone. We no longer have that problem! Don't know if Kerry Collins will stay or not, that is up in the air! He is not a dynamic QB like a McNabb or Vick, but he knows just about all offensives known to man kind. He could teach new guys the ropes.
I love the Titans! There are no longer any Oilers left on this team, so now we can become our own Identity. Only connection to ole oilers is BUD ADAMS and that is all. I believe he has gotten too old to be relevant anymore!
Yes, Jeff Fisher was definately unique! Not many coaches would go through what that man has gone through. He has very strong ties to the Nashville community. He loves Tennessee and has said that he is settled here. Very active in all charities of all kinds. He gets former players envolved, even retired players, in every aspect! They respect the man and are very vocal about it. He is not only a good coach, but he is a players coach!
When VY did what he did to the man, it shocked EVERYONE! One thing I will hand to Bud Adam's who was VY all the way, even he said VY has to go. Then a month later, The Fish, resigned. When he first came here in '99, he was this quite, handsome young man that was so excited about Tenn. and its fan base. He was exstactic by the responses of the people not to mention the beautiful stadium. Hey, he took us to the Super Bowl that year! Even though we lost, he still got us there.
Then the next year, I think we lost only 1 game the whole season! Got Number 1 seed, just to lose the first play off game to the Ravens! Talk about heart broke. But I could see the ware n tare in Fisher. He needs the time off

The 18 game season with only 2 pre-season games seems ok. It would not upset me either way.
NOW... 3 out of the 5 proposed realignments have my NY Giants moving to the AFC East. I do not like this one bit. The Giants are one of the oldest teams. They have rivalry's that are many years in the making. I hope this does not happen. If for some reason it does, I will still hate Dallas. lol

Re realignment, they say that the team most likely to be moved is the Texans. There are those who think they should move from the AFC to the NFC to be in the same division as Dallas :puke;; they want to create a Texas rivalry. I can see the logic in that, I guess, but I've been watching AFC football all my life, and the Oilers were one of the original AFC teams, so I'm not thrilled about that. I don't know why, but no one has called me for my opinion. :P
As for an 18 game season, I don't think I like that very much. The players are getting bigger and faster, and I think the injuries are growing. I don't feel desperately deprived at 16 games, plus the post season carries us all the way into February now. I'd be happiest with only two pre-season games and 16 regular season games, plus the post season. But everyone wants more money, and again, my opinion has not been sought.
Also, games last longer than they did years ago. Remember when most games started at noon and the afternoon games started at 3 (central time)? Well now the late games start at 3:15 because there are so many companies trying to sell us stuff. I don't think I need 18 weeks of football from noon til 11PM.

This is why I go out to watch Packers games here in Chicago even though it would probably be cheaper to get DirecTV and the NFL Sunday Ticket (drool) It would be very easy (and enjoyable!) to sit through both the noon game and the 3:15 game, plus the Sunday night game, and how can you forget Thursday and Monday! While I would enjoy every minute of it, nothing would get done around the house. ;D

When I was growing up, we had season tickets to the Oilers for years and years. The NFL was in my blood. I'm convinced I was born and raised in the Astrodome. Then I grew up and went to live abroad, so I missed quite a few years of NFL coverage. Since I have been back, I have become very aware of how different the game is, at least in the way that it is broadcast. It is over lawyered, over corporatized, over commercialized, over produced and I find to my horror that it quickly bores me. If I never see another beer or fast food commercial, it would be too soon. I think I'm just getting old. ::)

Ready for even longer games?
If an official rules a score (touchdown, field goal, safety or extra point) during a game, the replay official will automatically review the play. If there is any question as to whether the ruling is correct, they will buzz down to the referee and ask him to come to the monitor to review the play. If the replay official confirms the ruling is correct, they will buzz the referee indicating he is clear to let the scoring team attempt the extra point, or kick off if the scoring play was a field goal, safety or extra-point attempt. A coach will not be allowed to challenge the ruling of a score. The intent is to save the coach from having to challenge the ruling of a score and, thus, increase his chances of not running out of challenges or timeouts.

Do you ever notice how when officials huddle to discuss something, they get all touchy feely with each other? There seems to be an awful lot of cuddlin' going on in the huddlin'. IN the NFL, get rid of this political correctness crap and playball. When we played sports as kids, we didn't have all this crap and the game was played and done with within 2 or less hours in baseball, football, and probably basketball (wasn't my forteit and only played one season).
So in essence, more f'n commercials splashed over the screen or announcers pluggin away for some sponsor. I'd rather watch Sportscenter and just get all the highlights.

Members of the NFL Player Association's executive committee arrived at the trade association's headquarters in Washington, D.C., Tuesday, hoping to work through the latest round of settlement talks, NFL.com's Steve Wyche reported.

Well, I watched the Bears play the Bills tonight, and once again I was reminded of why the NFL broadcasts are so dull...all of those stupid beer commercials. You know those ads for Bud Light (I think) which bang on about how unmanly you behaved for not ordering Bud Light? Oh, I HATE those commericals, and if I were a guy, I'd REALLY be mad. You're not a "real man" unless you buy this beer...that's just awful. I don't know if I can endure another season of that crap.
Oh, and the Bears didn't get into the "red zone"...oh no...they got into the "Comcast Sportsnet Red Zone" or some such thing. The NFL is so corporatist; it's starting to really annoy me.

Yet our Comcast bill is higher, my mute button is getting worn out, I can't stand most of the products they plug anyway and they are annoying if I do not reach the remote fast enough. NASCAR is the same way and can' stand to watch it like when I was younger. There is to much political correctness and what made it famous is not allowed on the air by them. They plug the heck out of a fuel company that is not even in all 50 states, gotta thank every fricken sponsor before a real person that means something, and so on. Sports is not not worth watching unless you are there.

Watching the Texans tonight felt like watching the Bears, what with Danieal Manning and Brad Maynard on the squad. How bizarre. Even more bizarre is that the Texans' defense didn't lose the game in the final minutes, as was their modus operandi last season. ::)

What about Albert Haynesworth? After the way he treated Washington, he is lucky he got a job with New England. He really hated leaving the Titans, but he saw the big Dollar signs!!! Are you saying he might be slow due to diabetes?
If that is the case, he should not be playing because then there is something much worse going on and he would not be playing. Diabetes should not be used as an excuse, many other atheles who play sports in the major divisions do not have problems and play fine.

I don't think anyone believes Cutler's diabetes is slowing him down. The Bears' O-line is not their strong point, and Olin Kreutz's age finally caught up with him; I think Roberto Garza was playing center, but I am not sure who the starter will end up being. Cutler played only one or two series. I thought the second stringer Caleb Haney (sp?) looked good, but Mike Martz demoted him to third string for some reason that remains a mystery.

Hate it when players hold out tho especially just after a strike. I'm sure someone knows someone in the organization hearing if he has some better offers and if they don't want to meet his needs, cuts his butt loose, quit dragging it on and get the team aquainted so they can coherse smoothly with plays and signals. Hate when athletes get paid this big money that no one else makes and wants more. If you don't have a good personality and do not have endorsement deals, work on that!

Chris, Im with you dear! I read a comment that somebody said on facebook that went something like, " If you get to the Super Bowl with Chris Johnson, and you need 5 yards to win it,, would you bet a 13 million that he will get it?" I thought that was an interesting analogy! Yeap, he needs to be at the practices, but he has held out so long, if he gets the deal, it might just "bite him in the butt!".
Heck he could practice the first day and get hurt and be out for the season!!!! One never knows, but I do know he is not worth what he is asking! All it takes is a big man to squash him. The trick is you got to catch him first cause he is little and elusive and quick!
MM, I don't care to much for M. Marks. I think last year he put Cutler in some awkward positions, that he could have gotten knocked out! But Jay did good last year, I mean they made it to I think 2nd or 3rd round in playoffs.
Well, tonight's football game is Pittsburg and Philadelphia. Im gonna watch and see how VY does. I hope he does good,I really do! He has excellent talent and under M. Heimerdinger, he learned alot! I'm a diehard Detroit Lions fan, and we have been dying on the field for decades. HOWEVER, we took Cincinnati apart last week 34-3. But we stumbled a bit with Cleveland last night, 30-28. 15 PENALTIES for us in the game. We needed more discipline. While our passing game looks solid, our running game is a mess at the moment.

FOX does the same thing with racing too except they use a da** goffer Then they ask the stupidist questions or say something stupid. MM when you jump over to NBC5, they have to plaster you with Comcast this and Comcast that grrrr. And I use to think Frank Gifford was bad!

I suspect that I'll jinx the whole season, but I will take the risk...the Texans looked really good last night against the Saints. Their defensive line is so much better than in years past. It has taken them a long time to put together that particular puzzle. I remember very clearly the draft when VY, Reggie Bush and Mario Williams were available, and the Texans had the number one pick. Of course, EVERY pundit in the nation said they'd be taking either VY or Bush, but the night before the draft, I was listening to some football "expert" on a late night radio talk show, and he said that the Texans had to beat the Colts, and to do that, they'd have to draft Williams. In that instant, I knew that's EXACTLY what would happen, and lo and behold, it did. For YEARS the Texans were excoriated for that decision, but now we find that Bush is a shadow of his former self and has been traded, and VY is a headcase. But Mario Williams is getting better and better each year.
The secondary still makes me nervous, though.
I watched the game on the NFL network last night, and they obviously were just taking the Houston TV feed because doing the sideline reporting for the Texans was Bob Allen! OMG, he has been a sports reporter in Houston for decades! I didn't know he was still alive! And he doesn't look any older, really. Blast from the past.

OK, now, my main man is Larry Fitzgerald. I don't get to see the Cardinals play often, so I don't know much about that team. Anyone here a Cardinals fan? They don't seem to be a top tier team, and so I'm not sure why Fitzgerald would choose to agree to an eight year contract extension. Is it only because of the big bucks involved? Or is he just particularly loyal to that team and their fans?

Wow, YLguy, looks like the hit "Thomas" took ended his season! That is so terrible, but Tom is a good coach and will figure out a replacement. I just hate to see anyone get hurt. His own player got him, but it did not look that bad, but half time they found out the bad news.

I had to leave right at the end of the first half to go to my son's football practice. I DVR'd the 2nd half. I did not know that Thomas blew his ACL until I came home. Certainly not worth the meaningless win.
The Giants routed the Bears, 41-13, but lost Terrell Thomas to a knee injury in the process.

I would like to ask what may be a sensitive question, but it has been on my mind for eight years now, and I just have to ask. I do not mean to be disrespectful in any way, but I am curious to see what you all have to say.
I have been attending live sporting events in the US since I was 7 years old. I grew up in the Astrodome (yes, it was a long time ago), so sports is in my blood.
I went to live in the UK in 1985, and I attended lots of soccer, cricket and tennis matches over there. I still watched American sports, and when I would visit the US (at least twice a year), I'd catch games on TV.
I've always been used to the color guard and the singing of the Star Spangled Banner at live games, but now that I've returned to the US and have begun watching more sports on TV, I have noticed a distinct shift in national tone, and I am uncomfortable with it. I don't know if it is a result of 9/11, but it just seems for big, important team sport occasions (World Series, Super Bowl, etc), there are so many soldiers taking part in what looks like military exercises in a variety of pre-game pagentry. It feels like our sports have become militarized. I understand the concept of patriotism and sports, but when did patriotism become visually synonymous with displays of military hardware and soldiery? It just seems so inappropriate to me to mix sporting entertainment and military spectacle, like the trappings of war is entertainment, too.
The image that crystalized this discomfort for me was when there was a pre Super Bowl stealth bomber flyover. That just really creeped me out.
I was watching the tennis tonight, and before the women's semifinal, there was a ceremony where Marines unfurled a giant American flag on court. Now, it IS NYC and it IS 9/11 tomorrow, so I guess I can understand the symbolism, but why have Marines there? Why not have ordinary Americans...maybe friends or family members of some of the victims....or maybe just average New Yorkers who survived the day....instead of soldiers? What is the subliminal connection being made between the military and sports? I know we often hear football talk in terms of "war", but this is different.
Maybe I've really noticed it because of the long time I spent out of the US, but I've mentioned this to my husband many times. He is also an avid sports fan and has watched many a game on TV throughout the years, and he has noticed the same thing (once I pointed it out to him.)
So, what do you other sports fans think? I think there is a time and a place to reflect on war and remembrance, but I am not sure that the Super Bowl is the appropriate time. I am really curious to hear what you all think. Thanks.

Now, I've mentioned football. Baseball & football are the two most popular spectator sports in this country. And as such, it seems they ought to be able to tell us something about ourselves and our values.
I enjoy comparing baseball and football:
Baseball is a nineteenth-century pastoral game.
Football is a twentieth-century technological struggle.
Baseball is played on a diamond, in a park.The baseball park!
Football is played on a gridiron, in a stadium, sometimes called Soldier Field or War Memorial Stadium.
Baseball begins in the spring, the season of new life.
Football begins in the fall, when everything's dying.
In football you wear a helmet.
In baseball you wear a cap.
Football is concerned with downs - what down is it?
Baseball is concerned with ups - who's up?
In football you receive a penalty.
In baseball you make an error.
In football the specialist comes in to kick.
In baseball the specialist comes in to relieve somebody.
Football has hitting, clipping, spearing, piling on, personal fouls, late hitting and unnecessary roughness.
Baseball has the sacrifice.
Football is played in any kind of weather: rain, snow, sleet, hail, fog...
In baseball, if it rains, we don't go out to play.
Baseball has the seventh inning stretch.
Football has the two minute warning.
Baseball has no time limit: we don't know when it's gonna end - might have extra innings.
Football is rigidly timed, and it will end even if we've got to go to sudden death.
In baseball, during the game, in the stands, there's kind of a picnic feeling; emotions may run high or low, but there's not too much unpleasantness.
In football, during the game in the stands, you can be sure that at least twenty-seven times you're capable of taking the life of a fellow human being.
And finally, the objectives of the two games are completely different:
In football the object is for the quarterback, also known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his receivers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.
In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! - I hope I'll be safe at home!

For me, it will always be the 49ers. Who or lose. I have a close friend associated with the team. Then there is whatever team my husband's cousin happens to be coaching (Mike Shanahan). I could have tried to be a Bears fan when we first moved out here if it weren't for Ditka. Actually, I really don't "follow" football all that much. I just check the standings once in a while & cheer when the Bears lose!

I was just finishing digesting the news about the Texans' Matt Schaub when Jay Cutler gets an boo-boo. Anyone have any thoughts on how these two teams will cope?
The Titans really needed a win to capitalize on Houston's misfortunes, but gee, their QB goes down, too!
I am in two minds about Vince Young who replaced yet another downed QB, Michael Vick. He scrambles well and doesn't panic in third-down situations, but he looked pretty rusty to me. I hope he has learned to fare better psychologically.
The Colts truly are non-existent without Manning.

Cutler going down with a boo-boo is about the best thing to happen to the Bears and the worst thing to happen to the Packers. Caleb Hainie tried to come through for the Bears in the clutch last year during the NFC Championship game and all Cutler could do on the sidelines was ride the bike and look petulant. Cutler is not a leader by any sense of the word. I hope that Caleb Hainie has a stellar few games and Cutler slinks away during the off-season to some other team in disgrace. But wait....as a Packers fan, maybe I should hope that the Bears keep Cutler around? :rofl;
What I'm really hoping is that the Pack goes undefeated this year -- 16-0 would be an awesome accomplishment! 20 more quarters! :cheer:

Cattlekid, I can't say that I'm a Bears' fan as I am not from this area, but living here, I hear a lot of Bears' sports talk. I don't really understand why the media has caught this "Cutler isn't tough enough" narrative. None of his coaches or teammates have ever thought that. I mean, the guy has type 1 diabetes and has to check his blood sugar constantly throughout each game, yet he plays on and somehow manages to work within a very intricate Mike Martz offensive scheme.
He DOES have "jerk face", though! :rofl; He has that sleepy-eyed, jerk face look about him, but you know what they say about judging a book by its cover.
The Bears have more offensive weapons this year, so all Haney has to do is manage the game. For some reason, Martz has never really thought much of Haney, but Haney is who he has, so Martz had better start designing an offense with Haney at the helm. Devin Hester never really worked out as a reliable wide receiver, but he is still a very potent kickoff returner, so that is a valuable weapon. Matt Forte is pretty much the best at what he does, so Haney doesn't have to be Cutler in order to win. The Bears have a very easy next few games, all against the AFC West, so I see them making the playoffs with relative ease. I might be wrong, though. I can't wait to see them vs the Pack, although it is possible that GB will be resting their starters in that final game of the season.

Well, this is weird. Wade Phillips, the Texans' defensive coordinator, is going to be out for a couple of weeks because he is having some sort of operation on a kidney for a condition that is not life-threatening nor cancerous. I can't help but speculate what this "procedure" might be. Apparently it is a planned procedure but they've decided to do it now rather than delay it. What do you think is going on?

Okay, MooseMom, I need to trash talk ya about "Da Bearz". What happened to your team on Sunday??? My Seahawks trampled all over them in the 2nd half, after playing poorly in the first half! (Coincidentally, I didn't see the first half, I didn't know the game was on so early!) Marshawn Lynch is amazing at making Touchdowns. We now have a new tradition here of throwing Skittles at him after he makes one. Apparently, his mom used to give him Skittles after he made TD's as a kid, and it's stuck throughout his career. They showed him enjoying a bag of Skittles on the Thursday Night Football game after he made an amazing TD in the first quarter. He was in a mound of players, somehow managed to squeeze out of it and make a run for it. Pretty darn amazing to watch!

My family had season tickets to Oiler games from the very beginning of their existence. When the team left, my father was devastated. He died just one month before the Texans' first season began, so he never got to see them play. I am so glad the Texans won their first playoff game; my dad would have been so thrilled. I cried through most of the game, both from sadness and joy. It has been a confusing day.
I was hoping that the Lions would win tonight, seeing as that team and that city has gone through so many lean years, but they'll be well set for next year.
I'm very interested to see where Jeff Fisher ends up.

When he left last year, I really thought he would go into Officiating. He is on that board that determines rules & regulations! He knows all the rules better than the "Officials". When they make the wrong calls, he lets them know it, cause he KNOWS. But one thing I will add to that, he never disrespected them, he just said his Piece and dropped it!

Oh, don't get me started...
You know, I think the NFL has become over-lawyered. There is an inordinate amount of time spent on deciphering regulations, looking at multi-cameraed views and trying to discern whether on not the pylon was touched before the knee went down. When did it all get so complicated? And unbeknownst to me, it seems there is a whole different set of rules once the game is into the final two minutes. What's that about?
What do you all think of the new OT rules? I didn't know they existed, but I always HATED the idea that the first team could get the ball and just kick a field goal and win the game without the second team ever getting the ball. I think I like the new rules, but geez, it is STILL MORE RULES. ::)

Oh man...what could the Texans have accomplished if we'd had our starting QB? Well, at least TJ Yates had more going from him than did Caleb Hanie! Man, that Texan defense is so damn awesome...! And Arian Foster had a monster game...the Raven's just couldn't stop him. But a third string, rookie QB is going to make mistakes, and that was the game.

The niners won by 1 TD during the regular season. The Giants are a different team now.
The Giants’ turnaround is due to several factors. They are as healthy as they’ve been all season; almost every player on the roster practiced today, a rarity at this time of year. Umenyiora, Justin Tuck, Ahmad Bradshaw, David Baas, Mario Manningham – all of whom missed at least three games this season – have recovered from or are ignoring their ailments to become key contributors down the stretch.
The Giants are taking care of the ball. They have only one turnover in two postseason games and haven’t lost a fumble in six consecutive games, their longest such streak since they played the last seven regular season games in 2008 without a lost fumble. Last week, they had four takeaways against a Packers team that had 14 turnovers in 16 regular season games.
The team has run the ball better. Manning and wide receivers Hakeem Nicks, Victor Cruz and Mario Manningham have been in perfect sync (Hakeem Nicks has 280 yards and four touchdowns in two games and is the only player in NFL history with a touchdown reception of at least 66 yards in consecutive games in same postseason).
The defensive line has consistently harassed opposing quarterbacks and the coverage has improved. In the last two weeks, the defense held the Packers and Falcons to 247 and 388 yards, 129 and 17 yards under their season averages, respectively, and a total of two offensive touchdowns. Not bad for a unit that ranked 27th in yards allowed and 25th in scoring defense in the regular season.
You can attribute the 2 touchdowns to the refs.

I like this Jim Harbaugh guy, always have from his days coaching in college. But if you ask me, a first-year head coach turning around a team and getting them to the Super Bowl? I don't see it happening. What I can see is the Giants big playmakers making a difference. If Eli Manning gets good protection, that's an edge right there. I think we have a Super Bowl rematch from a couple years ago; Giants win. Oh baby, this is going to be a fun weekend now.

It was a little too exiting for me. I am glad I remembered to take my blood pressure meds. That was crazy when the game was tied and they showed the stat that both teams had exactly 288 yards in offense. They were very evenly matched I guess. The point spread of 2 1/2 was pretty darn close. It just favored the wrong team. Now we have to beat those darn Cheatriots again.

The Game:
I am reminded of the last time the Giants and 49ers met for championship purposes; Roger Craig fumbled the ball on the Giants three yard line during a off-tackle-right play. Had he not fumbled the 49ers would have scored for the winning touchdown. The Giants then went down field and won with a field goal. Walsh then cut Craig and ended his career.
Williams #10 didn’t just fumble, he kneed the ball on a punt return that he was supposed to back away from. With that mistake he ended an entire season of effort. The Giants took possession and scored.
Maddening. Upsetting. The regular punt returner was sitting on the bench with a small injury.
On the other hand, I am a Bay Area football fan and that includes the Raiders and the Cal Bears. I am used to disappointment; I have been led to the brink only to lose at the final showdown more than a person should bear. Yes, I recall when the Cal Bears were ranked #1 in the nation, for two hours. But the Giants won this time, congratulations to their fans and the team.
Yes, it was the Giants who back-cracked Montana in the first quarter of a play-off, thereby stripping the Niners of any desire to continue playing. And, yes, Frank Gifford once played for the Giants. Now there is a real-life whiner.
Giants won, see ya next year.

This is true, however, to be realistic, it is impossible to have true depth at every position. I mean, look at the Texans. Schaub goes down, Leinart comes in for ONE FREAKING PLAY and breaks his collarbone, and Yates has to carry the team the rest of the season. The Colts and the Bears were not so lucky.
I personally think the season is too long; it should go back to 14 regular season games. Not only that, but there are too many teams. They should eliminate 4 teams in each conference. This would help in 1. lessening the opportunity for injury by playing fewer games and 2. increasing the depth chart by not having so many teams. (Jacksonville...really?) I am tired of watching this game of attrition. I want to see as many healthy first-stringers at the end of the season as possible.

Yes. There is a lot of money behind this. The problem I have is that they are really pushing for this to happen next to the Staples Center in LA. I think that would be a disaster to get in and out of. One site considered is in The City of Industry which makes so much more sense. It has multiple highways around it and would be easily accessible form the Inland Empire, Orange County and LA County.

Injuries are a part of football. This is true from Pop Warner, high school, college & pro. It just is unfortunately.

I would just love to have the NFL here. I really can't believe there is not a team here anymore. I think they should bring back the Rams. Any team except the Raiders. I actually would like to go to a game and enjoy it.

Jeff Fisher is just the man to pull off another transition. He was with the Oilers when they moved to Nashville. Im sure now that he is with St. Louis Rams, he could move again to So. Cal. My brother-in-law, Tim, use to play football in high school and was really good. He went on to play at Spokane Falls Jr. College and was really good and went on to play for U of Idaho..... and was MVP. Then he started farming in the basin (in WA). Well, I guess he was nominated for the Hall of Fame in WA and won. After 44 years (he is 62) he is going to be in the Hall of Fame. Isn't that wonderful? He is trying to down play it but he is pretty excited. They are going to have him come to Pasco on May 31 to some sort of dinner/celebration.

Now Martinez, who coached at the College of San Mateo until 2005, when he retired for health reasons, is putting his own words to play.
Martinez, who suffered from kidney failure, found himself in need of a kidney transplant. For two years, the search for a donor has not been successful. Three months ago, Martinez's doctors told him he had only a few more months to live.
"I've been told I'm out of here, and I don't accept that," said Martinez. "I'm going to fight to the end."
That's why Brady has adopted that no-quit attitude to help his mentor Martinez connect with a match.
Brady is spreading the word through a banner he's been circulating online for the past four weeks through MatchingDonor.com, a nonprofit organization that can help interested living donors communicate their options.

The organization considers itself the first step to any type of organ donation, before donors ever agree to undergo the transplant. Those in need of a transplant post their own profile for those interested in donating to look through. Once they find a recipient they may want to help, they can start an initial conversation, which can potentially lead to testing through the recipients' transplant center coordinator to see if the interested donor is a match.
"We don't like to promote one person or another," said Dr. Jeremiah Lowney, medical director at MatchingDonor.com. "If Tom Martinez is helping people get to this site, then that's great."
Martinez met a then 13-year-old Brady at a quarterback football camp Martinez led in California. Brady has come back to learn from Martinez every year since.
"He's one of the fiercest competitors I have ever known," said Martinez. "He wants to do things 100 percent."
But Brady and Martinez's relationship is better than a great throw.
"Tom is, you know, not giving up on his coach. I can't express it into words my gratitude," he said. "That was the greatest thing he could have done for me because it brought forth people now that possibly we have a chance to get a match on."
Nearly 90,000 people in the U.S. are awaiting a kidney transplant, and nearly 3,000 people are added to the United Network for Organ Sharing national waiting list each month.
"Every time he puts one out, we get about 300 people come in to see if they're a match," said Paul Dooley, CEO of Matchingdonors.com, in Canton, Mass.
Even if they are not considered a match for Martinez, these volunteers may potentially help save another life, Dooley said.
"The waiting list is getting larger and larger," said Lowney. "I think we need any help we can get."
Many people hesitate to become living donors because they fear that giving away a part of their organ while they're still alive could create health problems for them later in life, Lowney said.
But studies that have tracked donors over decades, including one published January 2009 in the New England Journal of Medicine, found that living kidney donors were just as healthy as many in the general population who are not donors.
"People need to know that you can do this as a live organ donor," said Lowney.
Martinez, who has coached more games to victory than he can count and has mentored more athletes who continue to depend on him, seems to always find the best to say about his athletes such as Tom Brady.
"He obviously is the summation of everything you attempt to teach," he said. "I know him well enough to know that he's a much bigger star off the field than on the field."
But when asked about his own condition, and the hope for finding a kidney, Martinez depends on his teammates in life -- Brady, his family and potential donors -- to help him make it through.
"I always tell myself, just another challenge, just another bump in the road," Martinez said with tears in his eyes. "And I'm a proud person, so I try to go over the bumps by myself, but in this case I needed help going over the bump."

I'd never claim Geelong were the WORLD champions even though they won the AFL Premiership last year (the aussie rules football equivalent to the Super Bowl). Nobody else plays the sport except us....

This article was written in 2009, so it is rather old, and there are even more foreign-born players in the NFL now. As a matter of fact, during the Super Bowl today, there was mention of the fact the punter for the Patriots, Zoltan Mesko, is from Romania. There was also a Canadian, a German and a Brit playing. There seems to be a fair few from places like Samoa, and it seems that there is always one team that has an Aussie ex-rugby player as either a punter or a field goal kicker.
Baseball is much the same, but the numerous foreign players (and coaches) are mostly from Latin America and, increasingly, Japan. So, baseball is truly an "American" game in that it spans all of the Americas. The Dominican Republic and Venezuela are probably the two most fruitful spots for MLB scouts. If you want to be at the top of the sport, you have to go to the US, just as if you want to be at the top of the basketball world, you have to play in the NBA.

MM - yes, I remembered Canada plays NFL professionally afterwards. Also we have a few MLB players in the local Australian baseball league - which I did not know much about until recently, but apparently a player for Perth, who are in the final this weekend against Melbourne, has been denied permission by his MLB club (Minneapolis??) to play in it..... And yes the Japanese fascination with baseball is unusual, but I suspect goes back to post-WWII.
And yes, many countries have aussie rules played there by expats and interested parties, including the USA.
All I'm saying, without trying to flame a war or anything, is that I think it's a bit rich to claim "world" champion status when the teams play against teams on the same continent.
As for the game itself... I could not see it live - was at work and all I had was a score updater thingy on nfl.com which I looked at while working, so my comments prob don't mean much but it seems that not a lot happened in the first half - NY seemed to storm out of the blocks and get a fair lead early, and then right on half time after a timeout NE struck back with the TD to take a narrow lead - the 3rd was a bit see-saw but really all the action from what we could tell (and the reactions of my co-worker with his money on Tom Brady which was more entertaining than the broadcast probably was!!! :rofl;) was in the last quarter....
anyway for those happy with the result.. WOO... and for those unhappy.. BOO!!!

Thought of you last night, Marc! Aidan got it into his head that he wanted the Pats to win because the Giants trounced the Packers. (I did not point out to my sweet little guy that using this calculus, he would always be backing the team from the other division, but whatever.) I reminded him that he was pro-Giants when this same competition was played-out 4 years ago and he said "I was young then!" (He is the positively biblical age of 9!)
Anyhow, he did tell me several times that he wasn't all that emotionally invested in the game, and when it seemed pretty obvious that the Giants were going to win, I mentioned the friend in California who invited him camping and how happy this was going to make him, and he said 'OK. Yay, Giants!'
Don't know that I won you another convert, but I tried.
Oh, and I think someone has been slipping into my home at night to secretly teach Aidan the rules and the strategies of football. I caught the game-winning touchdown and Aidan explained in great detail how that was actually a mistake and left the door open for the (slim) possibility that the Patriots could win. He also explained what a safety was as I guess there was at least one of those in the game. The rules seem to have changed so much since I last attempted to really follow a game. Were safeties always worth 2 points?

The NFL will begin its 2012 NFL season on a Wednesday night in order to avoid conflicting with President Obama's nominating speech at the Democratic National Convention.
Roger Goodell made the announcement that the regular season will begin Sept. 5, one day earlier than the traditional start on the first Thursday of the month. The defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants will host the opener.
It will be the league's first Wednesday game since 1948.
Obama is scheduled to make his nomination speech on Thursday, Sept. 6 at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, N.C.
This marks the third time in five years that presidential politics and the NFL opener have overlapped. In 2008, the league moved up its Thursday opener between the Giants and Washington Redskins to 7 p.m. ET in order to avoid conflicting with John McCain's nominating speech at the Republican National Convention.
Last year, Obama did the adjusting, switching a scheduled jobs speech to 7 p.m. so it wouldn't bleed into NBC's coverage of the Green Bay Packers-New Orleans Saints game.

Other than that, yep, I'm ready for some football! It's like a soap opera...."All My Quarterbacks". Oh, the fiasco in NYC with Sanchez and Tebow; they both looked abysmal. Can Matt Schaub stay healthy for an entire season? The Bears finally have some real offensive weapons, so will Cutler lead them into the playoffs? Payton Manning in anything other than a Colts jersey? How weird is that?
OK, I have always hated the Cowboys. In my family, it's genetic. But now my most hated team has to be the Saints. Like most of the country, I loved their success story after Katrina; it felt so right! But after seeing Drew Brees on Leno or Letterman, whining about the "too harsh penalty", I hope they crash and burn. I know victory is sweet, but to purposely try to injure a fellow football player is so incredibly disrespectful to the sport in general. That team had been under suspicion for several years and had been warned by the commissioner, but they disregarded the warning and continued their dastardly ways, so they got what they deserved.
Apologies to any Saints fans out there, but if you do the crime, you do the time.

I just got into football last year almost at the end of the season.. So this is my 1st real season, from start to finshed and I'm still learning all the rules of the game. So here hoping on my boys to make it all the way to the super bowl this year!!

As a Packers fan, and a fan of football in general, I can clearly say that last night was the worst officiating I have ever seen. Not just the last call, but the phantom offensive pass interference earlier in the game.
Goddell needs to get his head out of his :sir ken; and get this lockout over with or the whole season should be stricken from the record books.

I have to say that so far, this has been a very entertaining season. So many games have been so close!
That game last night between the Cardinals and the Rams...who would have thought that the Rams would have beaten the undefeated Cardinals who had looked so good the week before? I've always been a fan of Jeff Fisher, so I'm happy for him, but my fave player is Larry Fitzgerald, so I was disappointed, too.
And the Jets...what a soap opera that is up there!
The Cowboys...it was great to watch them crash and burn on MNF. Gruden spent three quarters kissing Romo's butt, but that stopped after Romo's 40th interception. LOL. I was reading the Dallas paper's online edition on Tuesday morning; did you know that they've just opened a Victoria's Secret at the new stadium? Maybe that's what's wrong with the Cowboys. Jerry Jones is concentrating less on his football team and more on creating shopping opportunities for the fans. If the Jets are a soap opera, the Cowboys are a circus.
Payton Manning looks like he might well turn the Broncos around. Can't wait to see them play the Pats.
Living as I do in Chicagoland, I'm getting well and truly sick of hearing about Jay Cutler's demeanor or Cutler's body language or Cutler's tone of voice or Cutler's jerk-face. It's getting damn weird listening to men constantly psychoanalyzing Cutler.
Can you believe the Saints are 0-4? I suspect that might change this weekend, although I hope it doesn't because I am tired of Drew Brees's whingeing.
Is anyone tired of hearing the pundits talking about "RG3"? Especially when older announcers use that nickname, it sounds like they're trying to be really cool. I can barely stand to listen to ESPN anymore.

I missed the entire first half of Texans vs Jets because...wait for it...my husband wanted to watch "The Voice".
Neither of us had ever seen this show, but somehow my husband got hooked on it. So here we were, sitting in front of the TV with him oohing and aahing over De'borah and me wanting to see who was QBing for the Jets, and I was thinking, "What's wrong with this picture?" :P (Although she WAS very good! And Sanchez wasn't.)

The Giants are leading the NFC East by 2 games. They play a big one Monday night against the Redskins.
This is where fantasy teams go haywire because they don't always play their starters or don't let them play the whole game.

I think Foles will be OK. He's young and needs time to mature but he's more of a traditional quarterback. That's something we haven't had in Philly for quite a while. Vick will be another teams problem next year I believe. :bandance;

I'm picking Bengals (to win, but at least taking the points), Packers, Colts (I don't trust Flacco, and Andrew Luck went to my high school. I remember watching his dad play for the Oilers. Does that date me or what?) and Seahawks.
It's going to be great fun watching THREE rooking QBs in the playoffs!

As for my Giants not making it...they really did not deserve it. Finished the season 9-7. We never knew what team was going to show up. They either played great or horrible.

Yes, I have concerns about RGIII, too, and if he aggravates an injury, that'd be a shame. I much prefer to watch playoff games where the teams have not been decimated by injury, but that's the nature of the NFL, I suppose. If he is too injured to be effective, I think Seattle's defense may well have a good day.

The Texans' offense performed just like I thought they would, ie, pretty lame, but the defense/JJ Watt smacked down whatever momentum Cincinnati had coming in. I really thought that the Bengals would at least cover, but they looked awful. (In Houston, they call Watt "The Milkman" because he's white and always delivers. LOL!)
I don't think the Vikings would have beaten the Pack even with Ponder, but Joe Webb looked woeful. Then again, I believe he'd only thrown three passes all year, and it is very difficult to win a playoff game at Lambeau under those circumstances.
With this being Ray Lewis' last game, that might be the emotional kick in the butt the Ravens need to be victorious. However, the Colts have their own emotional chess piece in Pagano.

There are many football fans here that already hold alliances to other teams. There is still a huge Raiders fan base here. I do not want the Raiders though.

The city votes on stuff even though the residents object. With concerts, soccer, flea market, special events and college football, it's already a major traffic problem. Plus people will park in front of homes, drunk, and pee in your bushes. It's fun! LOL

I have been listening/watching quite a lot of the post game analyses on different channels, and not once have I heard any criticism of this horrific move by Carroll. I'll have to find the online edition of the Seattle newspaper and see what they're saying. I was rooting for the Seahawks all the way, but when this fool tried to ice the kicker, well, I couldn't believe it. I hope this ends this terrible habit of coaches pulling this stunt. It's just so stupid.

I love the NFL and especially the Denver Broncos. My first picture, is of my mom's pregnant tummy painted orange for a game in 1969 before I was born. When we lived in Colorado I loved going to the games. When I was young I actually got scared by the rocking of the old Mile High Stadium. I never miss a game on TV. It must be genetic cause my daughter is as much a fan as I am. We love to watch together. This year was her first year managing a fantasy football team and she won our family and friends league of 16 teams.
We are a bit bummed about the Broncos losing to the Ravens but it was a good game. The team did better this year than we expected.
I actually growled at the nurse who tried to ask me to take my Broncos jersey off this past Saturday....My wife intervened so there were no casualties...

Oh, that was the most exciting game!! It was such a shame that either team had to lose. Peyton Manning is a godsend to the Broncos. I'm not sure that Tim Tebow will be able to cut it in the NFL. Let's see what he does in J'ville. He might be brilliant for all we know.

I truly believe the Giants will be in the mix this year. They need to tweak a few things, but are basically a real solid team. Im partial to them because of the Manning brothers. Ely is a better QB than his brother, but his line is getting better in the protection field.
I sure hope my Titans show up this year. Can't afford another year like last year!

My Niners got robbed... It was overtly clear that the NFL wanted "Killin' Ray Lewis" to go out on top. How do you call it a fumble when the guys facemask is being ripped off. Id drop the ball too if you twisted my head around. Though Harbaughs call to kick a field goal at the end of the half in the redzone didnt help matters. That's ok. We will be MUCH better next year.

As much as I love football, I am not quite ready for it because...
1. I'm hoping the Sox will get swept by the Astros. Chicago sports talk radio is at its best when a local team sucks eggs.
2. I'm a relatively new hockey fan and am really loving the Stanley Cup playoffs. Two OT games between the Hawks and Bruins. I've decided there are few things more exciting in the sports world than sudden death ice hockey.
3. Can the Spurs win one of the final two matches at the Heat? Can't wait to find out!
4. Wimbledon! Need I say more! Starts on the 24th, the same day as my one year post tx anniversary, so I'm pumped!
5. While living in the UK, I became a Formula 1 fan. It's not as easy to follow here in the US because of the time differences, but did you know that the US Grand Prix (the Formula One schedule doesn't always include the US) will be held in Austin, TX this year? It was held there last year and was such a success that I am hoping that it will be the established venue for all US Formula One races in the future.
6. Oh, and the English Premiership season begins 17 August and will be shown on NBC's sports channel. Crystal Palace was promoted, so I'll actually be able to see them on American TV!!! Amazing!
So, I have lots of sports to watch before I can begin thinking about the NFL!

I was born and raised in Texas, but I've just spent a week in the UP and would very much like to be an honorary Yooper, if that's allowed! Can't wait to go back.
As for the NFL, I can't believe I'm going to say this, but after the completely amazing Stanley Cup playoffs, I just can't get into the whole NFL circus. I am a relatively new hockey fan, and there is just something so, well, "pure" about the sport, at least in the way it is presented. I'm so tired of the corporatization of the NFL that I'm becoming a little jaded. I've been a sports fan since I was 7 years old. But it just seems that the three major American team sports (NFL, MLB and NBA) have become nothing but long running soap operas. If I hear another season of Chicago's sportscasters blathering on about Jay Cutler's body language, I'm turning the dial.
Still, I've turning in my picks for week 1, but my heart just wasn't in it.
Still hate the Cowboys, though! Still hope they crash and burn. LOL!

I spent 7 weeks in NE Wisconsin, just 6 miles from Yooperland. I crossed the Menominee River almost daily. You bet ya...!!!!! I had to travel 70 miles to the south to go to a Fresenius Clinic although there was a Baxter clincs just 10 miles away. I went to the Baxter clinic when I was there in 2011 and was not happy there. Plus this time I am using the Liberty cycler and they would have had to switch me over to their cycler and then what would I do with it when I left?

Well, the last time the Giants started off 0-2 they won the Superbowl. They definitely have multiple problems to overcome this year. Luckily it looks like they are playing in the NFC Least Division.

As for the rest of the NFL? It has been very exciting I saw a stat that was how many of the games played the first 2 weeks were decided by less than 7 points. Unfortunately it was not so exciting for me. :'( (See previous post)

Brady is upset he has no decent receivers. The idiot Patriots let Welker go and didn't re-sign others , and Hernandez is in JAIL(not doing dialysis), and Gronk is hurt. Now Amendola is injured and they have 3 rookies. Brady is probably angry at Belichick for all this but is taking it out on the kid receivers. The Pats will keep winning for now with their defense which is decent.

The Seahawks had a 4-0 pre-season record (yeah, I know, no big deal there) and now have a 2-0 record in the regular season. Whoo hoo, we beat the 49er's in our house w/an almost 1-hour lightning delay!!!
The 12th Man was there in Full Force, and they broke the loudest stadium record. A local radio station created a song to commemorate the event:

If you're wondering about the worst division in football, look no farther than the NFC East. The division went 1-3 during Sunday's action with only the Washington Redskins saving face with a win in Oakland — their first of the season. Meanwhile, the New York Giants dropped to 0-4 with a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, the Denver Broncos ran all over the Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys fell to the San Diego Chargers.
NFC East teams are a combined 4-12 this season and there's no doubt that part of that can be attributed to their matchups against the surprisingly powerful AFC West. The two divisions have played eight games over the first four weeks with the AFC West holding a 7-1 edge.

Why would anyone harass a teammate like that, someone who is supposed to be on your team, helping you on to victory? And what kind of head coach can't see what's going on?
I just don't feel real good right now about being a fan of the NFL. Ugh. :'(

Seattle Seahawks now have the best record in the NFL 11-1 as we enter Week 14 of the NFL regular season. We have broken the "Loudest Fans" record twice, most recently this past Monday for Monday Night Football. Now we hear stories that the San Francisco 49'ers have to send their season ticket holders letters on how to cheer ( :rofl; ). I am not the biggest football fan out there, but I must admit I LOOOOVE all the hoopla here in the Seattle area when our team does good. It's a fun energy! To add to the fun, 2 co-workers in my department at work made a bet. If the Seahawks make it in the top 4 of the playoffs, the non-fan has to wear a Seahawks Jersey every Friday. If they don't make it that far, the rabid Seahawks fan has to wear a tutu. I get entertained either way! :beer1;

Some of you may have heard about a little promotion a local car dealership did here in the greater Seattle area. Jet Chevrolet of Federal Way decided to run a promotion to have a raffle for 12 people to win $35000 each (in honor of the Seahawks "12th Man") IF they were able to shut out the NY Giants in their home stadium. They purchased an insurance policy to cover it, and the insurance company said it was about a 60-1 chance that that would happen.
The game was phenomenal! (Well, for a Seahawks fan, that is....) Incredible defense, 5 interceptions - one of them at the NYG TD line which prevented a TD. I kind of wish I was at a local bar watching it instead of at home, but it was a 10am game! I didn't want to get up that early!
Anyway, here is a story about this promo. It highlights one of the winners - a husband and wife and the wife has kidney disease. She has a lot of medical bills, but they also needed a new car. I am so happy that this worked out for them! It's nice to see a good luck story every once in a while ;D

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. -- Twelve lucky Seahawks fans became $35,000 richer after the team’s 23-0 shutout win against the New York Giants Sunday.
Federal Way’s Jet Chevrolet offered any customer that purchased a car or looked at one a chance to win the money if the Legion of Boom prevented their opponent from scoring any points.
“Minute by minute we were like come on clock keep ticking keep ticking,” said Tom Lovorich, who purchased a truck and qualified for the drawing.
“It was unbelievable normally during a shutout game you kind of quit half way through but we couldn’t quit watching because we knew we were in the drawing,” said his wife Rahna.
The Seahawk’s defense intercepted the opposing quarterback five times, preventing late scores in the game.
“Legion of boom I’ve got to thank those guys if I win I’ll send them a Christmas card and some candy,” said Michael Morris, who bought a car last week.
Morris’ wife is suffering from Kidney Disease, winning the money would help pay off amounting medical bills.
“It’d help out a lot,” he said.
A total of 29 people accounted for nearly 1400 entries. If a person purchased a car they received 100 entries, if they just looked they received one.
Morris learned he was one of the lucky winners.
“I can’t believe it,” he said.
He immediately shares the news on the phone with his wife, who’s been suffering. The couple can finally afford her wish.
“She wants to go to Hawaii,” he said
Morris says the feeling is like winning the Super Bowl.
“Thank you Seahawks, thank you so much,” said Morris.
While the dealership paid out $420,000, all but $7,000 of it will be covered by insurance.
“We do different promotion, newspaper ads, TV but never in our wildest dreams did we think we’d get this much hype,” said Jim Johnson, co-owner.
According to Johnson, the giveaway may have never happened. The dealership intended to run the promotion for the Seahawks vs. 49ers game, but couldn’t get the legal clearance for it in time.

OK, it's Wild Card Weekend, and already we've seen two remarkable games.
I am tired of hearing that KC's loss was the result of the second biggest comeback in playoff history because I remember all too well the biggest comeback, and that was that asshat game in 1993 when my beloved Oilers were beaten by Buffalo after being ahead 1,000 to 0. ::) But what a game by Andrew Luck. Two little bits of trivia: Oliver Luck, Andrew's dad, played QB for the Oilers, and Andrew Luck went to my high school.
I hate the Saints. After that whole debacle that resulted in Sean Peyton's year long suspension, Drew Brees went on Leno and complained that the NFL was being too harsh. Whine and bitch, bitch and whine. So I hated to see them win tonight. Still, it was an exciting game. Well, we had TWO exciting games tonight!
Anyone have any thoughts on all of the coaching firings/hirings that occurred this past week? Lots of drama!

Seattle has some serious Blue Fever right now. 12th Man flags are everywhere, and just about all anyone can talk about is Saturday's playoff game against NOLA Saints. Also, the Seahawks have a special relationship/appreciation for their fans. They always thank the fans for doing their part in keeping the stadium LOUD during key points during the games. When legions of fans line up to wait for their busses at Seahawk HQ, they're all looking out their windows taking pics and films with their phones, smiling and waving at all the fans. I don't know what other cities are like during big game times like these, but I have to say, I sure do love Seattle during playoff time!

49ers are coming to Seattle to do in the Seabirds. Yes, they have Petey Tweetie as coach. Say, isn't he the guy who escaped from USC after getting caught by the NCAA for a half dozen rule violations?
These two teams split 1-1 during the regular season. The 49er loss to Seattle happened when there were major injuries - at Candlestick the 49ers had their full roster for the starting team. The Sea-pooping-birds lost that one.

SIXTEEN HOURS TIL KICKOFF!!!!!!
My friend and I went to a 12th Man Fan Rally today in an outdoor shopping center, then drove over to the city to catch the sights of all the "12ing" around town. I LOVE how this city gets so into it! Drove to Kerry Park (a famous view of Seattle on the Space Needle side) and to West Seattle (another famous view of the city skyline). Made for a nice day!
This city/state is SO excited for the big game tomorrow!!! The energy around here is infectious and amazing! GO HAWKS!!!! YOU CAN *DO* THIS!!!!!

I have been following the game while at work as best I can and that seems like some sort of game- mostly tough going from what I could see, and it seemed like a real arm wrestle for most of the game with scoring difficult. They often say these finals are the best games to see, though I can bet for fans of either side real heart in mouth stuff.
So definitely going to support Seattle in the Superbowl!!! :)

That game was pure NFL drama entertainment!!! We were down come half-time, we missed close TD's, but we came back with a vengeance, and we held it, too! It was beautiful!!!! I watched it with friends in a nearby pizza place that has a great bar set up. LOUD and PROUD fans were we!!!!
If you ever wanted to come to Seattle - stop by during these next 2 weeks! It's gonna be Cah-RAY-ZEE out here!!!!

Two bad calls determined the game: wrong roughing the kicker call; the fumble the Niners recovered on the one yard line and the referees gave the ball back to Seattle. Both calls gave Seattle touchdowns. The NFL did say these calls were wrong, but it'll have to wait until next year when the Owners get together to review rule changes.
I hate it when referees determine the outcome of an entire season for a team by making bad calls. I recall the Sacramento Kings in the NBA playoffs against the LA Lakers. The Kings had it won but the referee let Shaq step over the free throw line eight times. The game was won by LA by one point. This referee was investigated and found to have taken bribes and was fired before the next season.
If the referees in the game cannot make the call, what is the point of watching the game?

I think Sherman was brilliant! What drives me crazy is this: all season long, we've been told what a big rivalry this has become. For the entire damn week before the game, it was drummed into our heads that this was a bitter rivalry because it was so bitter and it was such a rivalry. ::) Each day, the bitterness and the rivalry-ness grew and grew until it became this great behemoth. Harbaugh vs Carroll, etc. BITTER RIVALRY!!!!!! Oh, this is the stuff the media loves and promotes so that we can all work ourselves into a lather about the bitterness of this rivalry because it is, after all, so bitter. And these two teams are such big rivals, in case you've forgotten. Not to mention bitter.
Yet when one player, after making what was probably the biggest play of his life, engages in some trash talk when a reporter deems it appropriate to stick a mic in his face less than a minute after victory, everyone gets a case of the vapors. If anyone was surprised by what Sherman said, then they don't know a damn thing about this "bitter rivalry" and don't have my permission to opine upon the subject. :P
I listen to a fair amount of sports talk radio here in Chicago, namely 670 The Score. Last week during an analysis of the upcoming game (uh, I mean, THE BITTER RIVALRY), there was a guest on who was talking about his pick for the game. I will not post his name because while I am 95% sure I remember who said this, I am not 100% sure. Anyway, this guest is a very frequent analyst for the NFL and is on The Score most days, sometimes even hosting a show. He has been around for a long time and knows both Harbaugh and Carroll personally, and he actually said that he was hoping the 49ers would win because while Harbaugh is crazy, he's at least a good guy. However, Carroll is not a good guy and "I personally dislike him." Now, I thought THAT was rather more stunning than what Sherman had to say.
The righteous indignation over Sherman's comments have, unfortunately, diverted our attention from two issues that I find to be disturbing. Am I alone in thinking that there seem to be more serious injuries to players' legs/ankles/feet than usual? While I applaud efforts to minimize head injuries, it seems to me that one unseen consequence of these efforts is more blows to the legs. There were a couple of really horrible injuries, yet the network primly stuck a commercial in our faces, mercifully shielding us from actually seeing what can happen to the human body during a game that is played for our entertainment.
Yet we get all whipped up over Sherman's comments. Talk about perspective...!
The second issue, to which someone has already alluded, is the declining quality of the refs. OMG, it's terrible. The NFL has become overlawyered with rules so complicated that now the networks have had to engage the services of a retired head ref to explain things to us! Surely the NFL makes enough money that they can employ refs on a full-time basis! Penalties that should have been called. Penalties that should not have been called. It's really frustrating.

Resident Seahawk fan here! I bought a nice, fancy, stitched Sherman jersey from a nice gray-haired man at a fan rally on Saturday, the day before this game. I think it's irregular, but I figured that with it being Sherman, it's still a good investment. I love his story about growing up in the rough streets of Compton, graduating high school w/a 4.2 gpa, then going on to succeed at Stanford, both on and off the field. I also love that he has a foundation that he uses to help kids in his old 'hood, and in 'hoods around the Seattle area - kids who are growing up poor, w/o a mom and/or a dad. He even gives them his # so they can call him! I think Richard Sherman is a class act. Like MooseMom said, he didn't insult Erin Andrews, or use any swear words. It was a passionate moment after the biggest play not only in his life, but in Seattle sports history! And I don't know how much you all know about Seattle sports history, but I'm here to tell you that it doesn't take many pages to tell! Also, here's a funny thing. On the radio station that broadcasts the Seahawk games, Sherman of course was the hot topic of the day. They were taking calls about it, and the vast majority of people who called in were women! And they all were defending him!
Seahawk fans have a serious love affair with their team, and that feeling is mutual! I have no idea what it's like in other cities, but up here, it is truly an incredible thing. I love the meaning of the 12th Man, and the 12the Man Flag that is raised before every home game, and the significance of it and who raises it. I love that we have a fan from the beginning we call Mama Blue, who has been to EVERY home game since the beginning, decked out in her blue wig and blue and green gear. She was one of the first NFL fans to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton OH. I love stuff like that!
Then there's our QB, Russell Wilson, who visits Children's Hospital every Tuesday. As long as he's in town, he's at that hospital, visiting the children there and spreading smiles, laughter, and happiness. I learned on the radio today that he's comfortable in hospitals, and one of the first things he did when he arrived here in town was he went to Children's and signed up to volunteer. I think that's beautiful, and I am so happy to have a man like that as the leader of my NFL team.
I have only been to one game, which was this season on Nov 3rd. I love the energy out by the stadium leading up to the game, and everything about it! I know I won't be going to too many, just because of the cost, or the weather. But, I do love what the Hawks have done to this area right now. I can't wait to see how it ends up!

49ers are coming to Seattle to do in the Seabirds. Yes, they have Petey Tweetie as coach. Say, isn't he the guy who escaped from USC after getting caught by the NCAA for a half dozen rule violations?
These two teams split 1-1 during the regular season. The 49er loss to Seattle happened when there were major injuries - at Candlestick the 49ers had their full roster for the starting team. The Sea-pooping-birds lost that one.

Congrats to Seattle!
I was at work so only caiught the nfl score updates when I had moments during my work but it was a pretty convincing win by the Seahawks for the Superb Owl as Colbert calls it.
I was pretty darn happy. Plus I'd also had a small investment on the win at $2.10 :)

I took the Seahawks to win, but I had no idea that they'd win so convincingly!
They utterly trashed the Broncos. I mean, how embarrassed must those players feel today? The Seahawks so totally dominated that game that in the final quarter, with the score at about a billion to 8, on their last two possessions they could have kicked easily made field goals, but instead they invoked some sort of mercy rule and went for it on 4th and whatever. I mean, when a team decides not to run up the score one you, and when it's the freakin' Super Bowl, you know you have been well and truly humiliated.
I was listening to some of the pre-game hooha on the radio, and I heard Larry Fitzgerald (my fave player) say that defense wins Championships. Word!!
Oh, and did anyone notice that we didn't see any shots of Archie in the luxury lounge?

Even I have to admit, it was a complete dismantling of the Packers. I have a feeling that the same thing will happen to any team who dares enter CenturyLink field this year. Was that field specifically designed to capture all the crowd noise and send it back down to the field because that definitely looks like what was happening.
And BTW, did Pete Carroll have any "work" done during the offseason? He looked vaguely....shiny.

Just to be clear, when I say I will be taking the Hawks at home all season, I am referring to the football pool to which I belong. I do not think I could tolerate that much noise for three hours, but then again, I am not a Seattle fan. I guess if you have a Super Bowl winning team, you can tolerate just about anything.

The thought of the NFL recognizing Breast Cancer Awareness month in October is the height of hypocrisy.
On The Score (a local sports radio call-in show here in Chicagoland) this morning, they were asking amongst themselves whether or not female fans would boycott. The general consensus was "no", and several women texted in that they'd keep watching. Well, I called in and declared that I would not. I've been going to NFL games since I was 8 years old. I practically grew up in the Astrodome. But I can't stomach it now. I love football but I despise the NFL. Roger Goodell is the face of the NFL, and he must go.
The Score asked me to leave my phone number with their producer; they plan to check back with me in a month to see if I'm still boycotting. After I hung up, I turned the radio back on, and the general consensus on the show was that no, I'd not be able to stay away from the TV on game days.

The breast cancer awareness month drives me bat shit crazy anyway. I'd say it was already hypocrisy.
I wish you the best with your boycott. I'm not, but that's because there are plenty of players voicing their disgust over this matter, so I don't feel so alone. I'm a feminist and the fact that this got people talking and the commissioner wanting feedback from fans, makes me think there is hope. I don't know how I feel about Godell. I think he should probably pack up after this horrid incident, but it isn't the first incident regarding assault of some nature, so him getting it wrong (and possibly lying about things for self preservation) isn't exactly shocking.
*le sigh* Here's hoping Janay Palmer's life isn't in complete shambles.

Whatever Aaron Rodgers did to "RELAX" earlier in the season after the Packers crappy start, he needs to do again and twice as much during the bye week. We need to be 150% to ensure that we put the Bears in their place as usual. No mistakes and no mercy.
Speaking of the Bears, how in the world do you celebrate a sack of a 2nd string QB when you are down almost 30 points and injure yourself so badly that you are out for the season? Marc Tressman is too nice a guy as the Bears coach. Even though I am not a Bears fan, they need to get some of the old-timers to come down to Halas Hall and give the current guys a good ass-chewing. I've continued with my season-long boycott of the NFL because of that monumental liar, Roger Goodell, but today I was watching the rugby match between the USA and the New Zealand All Blacks, and the TV commentators mentioned the fiasco that is the Bears. The match was played at Soldier Field, hence the reason to mention the Bears. Anyway, the All Blacks are an incredibly disciplined team. They attended a Bulls game, a Blackhawks game and also watched a Bears practice, and the commentators expressed the hope that the Bears' coaching staff and players asked the All Blacks for some tips. LOL!

With their luck, Jay will suffer an injury himself during next week's game and Tennessee will completely turn their backs on him.

Even though I am a die-hard Packers fan, I have to admit that I was very amused yesterday when George McCaskey (current chairman of the Chicago Bears) had to admit during his press conference that his mother, Virginia McCaskey (Bears owner and daughter of George Halas) was "pissed off" about the Bears performance this year.
I guess it finally took Mama Bear's anger to get the organization off their collective :sir ken; to make some changes. All I can say is "You go, girl!" :rofl; :rofl; :rofl;

I am so glad the Pack pulled it out. My husband had very kindly bought us tickets for Christmas to a play at our local community theater, but he didn't think to look at the date. ::) Of course the play was at 3PM the afternoon of the Cowboys/Packers game, and at the time we had to leave, the Cowgirls were ahead. At intermission, he found someone who could find out the final score, and boy, was I relieved!

That was truly the most amazing football game I have ever watched! My sister thought the game was over in the first half, but my friend and I had hope, which was not easy to hold on to as a Seahawk fan during that game. Just totally, completely, incredibly amazing and *STUNNED* at how that turned out!
For any of you Green Bay Packer fans, just keep in mind, if the Seahawks beat the Patriots, that will make the Packers look BETTER. To lose to a team that beats the Patriots isn't as bad as losing to a team that loses to them. Think about it.

When they went for 2 field goals when it was 4th and goal, I said to my husband, "This will come back to haunt them." And it did. I've never seen such a good team make a mistake at just about every single step of the way.
Neither team played well. It was a comedy of errors, but someone had to win, I guess.
The cheeseheads melted bigtime.
The Seahawks are going to have to really up their game if they are to beat the juggernaut that's the Patriots.

I just learned this season that teams have their own footballs. The New York Times says about this deflated ball thing: "The game was played in what at times was driving rain, and deflated balls would be easier to grip in the wet weather. According to N.F.L. rules, each team is required to make 12 primary balls — inflated to 12.5 to 13.5 pounds per square inch — available for testing by the referee 2 hours 15 minutes before kickoff. The referee is the “sole judge as to whether all balls offered for play comply with” league specifications. Some balls are designated for kicking only." This charge is still being investigated by the NFL. I think the referees can tell pretty easily if the ball is not inflated properly--hence the delay that swapped a kicking ball for the game ball. The kid in charge of the balls looked about 12 years old. My opinion is that this is much ado about nothing but I love my team and am biased.

Just for the record this would be the third time belicheat has been caught. Videotaping a closed Rams practce before a super bowl, video taping jet coaches during a game to steal play calling, and now if true deflating balls. After the Jet incident the Patriot owner asked the coach on a scale of 1 to 10 how much of a advantage did he gain and he said 1 the owner replied then you are a smuck. If the NFL didn't think it was important why hand the ref check all the balls. Personally I think the NFL needs to send a clear and effective message about following the rules. If you don't like the rules get them changed don't break them.

I so seriously doubt that Roger Goodell is going to do anything to anybody, certainly not during the week before the Super Bowl. This is a proverbial tempest in a teapot that everyone will forget about once they start heading down to Arizona for the week-long orgy that is Super Bowl week.

They Cant ignore this as much as the patriot fans want the nfl to ignore this sordid affair. For one half the patriots clearly flouted a rule that is there for all teams. The other problem is that the nfl knew about this prior to the game and should be able to reconstruct what happened by watching the video of the game and the stadium cameras. Since all the balls were deflated the same amount this had to be a time consuming procedure with a pressure gauge. For those hoping it was a accident the 11 ball were reinflated during half time and had the correct amount of air at the end of the game. Quite clearly this is a rogue organization which did not learn its lesson in 2007 when belicheat was fined 500000 dollars and they lost a first round draft pick. This time it should be a million dollar fine and a first round pick this year and a first round pick next year, keep doubling the penalty and maybe they will stop this stupid cheating.

My friend and I joined many other 12's in the big Seahawks Super Bowl Send-Off! That has become a big thing around here now. They close a street from the freeway exit all the way to the back entrance to the airport. Cops are everywhere, helicopters from the big 3 local news channels, all sorts of craziness! Nothing but a big sea of people in their blue and green, blue 12 flags waving everywhere, 12th Fan signs, painted faces, Skittles being tossed. The energy is awesome!!! I love being a part of something so happy and celebratory, and I love how it's a distraction to real life. It's like an excuse to take a break from it all. I love the guys who make up my team, all their personalities and character. We have an awesome coach who has a different philosophy, which I think is a huge contributor to the success of this team. There is an article in the Seattle Tines regarding the brotherhood that is strong in this team, and I truly believe there is something to that. It certainly showed in the end of that NFC Championship game.
Win or lose, I will be there to welcome them home come after the Super Bowl. I am taking that Monday off, so I won't have to worry about waking up early for work! It has become tradition for me now, with this being the 3rd Seahawks Super Bowl, for me to go to the send-off, and take the day after off from work. I'm lucky that I've been able to do that these 3 times!

That will be the question of the ages. Carroll is taking the blame and so is Wilson. I have not heard why the fight broke out. That will be interesting. It was a very entertaining game. I about died at the end. I'm still so sad today.

Yes, it was a very disappointing end to a well fought game. But, I couldn't help but notice something about the Patriots...
When time came for the Lombardi ceremony, and speeches were made - not ONE Patriot player (or coach, if I remember correctly) thanked their fans.
If the Seahawks had won, any player with a microphone shoved in front of him (except for maybe Lynch, but he has a rep to protect when it comes to the media, and yes, he even has expressed his appreciation for the 12's) will praise the fans for their dedication and show appreciation. It just how it is up here. I find it strange that the same is not true with other teams. The fans are even mentioned during a loss. It's like one big family up here in our corner of the country. Is it really not like that for other teams? I find that sad, because really, any team that doesn't have that kind of relationship with their fans - those fans are really missing out. Sure, a lot of it is probably a marketing thing. I get that. But, no one can deny the power it has and the feeling it puts in a sports community.

The Patriots are hugely grateful to their fans. They have thanked them in many interviews and on social media. As soon as weather permits they will have a parade through the streets of Boston for their fans. I know in years past they have had thank you parades in cities in other of the New England states--not sure about this year since I've moved to enemy territory (NY) and am out of the loop much of the time. I think most teams are tuned in to how important it is to mention the fans (doesn't mean network TV will show it). It was a great game, hard fought by both teams.

Oh, the general feeling is it was the wrong call and Beast Mode (Marshawn Lynch) should have been able to run the ball. Most people feel that way. We love our Beast Mode out here :)

My Patriots get beat up too much on this thread. I couldn't handle it. Thick skin required but since I don't have thick skin but I do love football I just check in from time to time. I hope you are right about the Patriots getting to the SB. Go Pats!

Well, I spent three years building the Steelers stadium in early 2000s and Dan Rooney treated me like a son.
So as long as he is alive (although I hate his politics and his quarterback is a criminal) I will root for Steelers.

Hey I don't blame you. I grew up in Buffalo for the first 12 years of life and have been to quite a few games. I was with them before the super bowls and will stay with them. You gotta stay with the team that makes you happy.
I was just joking on ya too ya know. I'm just razzing you because my bills are out of it now and besides ribbing back and forth can be fun at times. Sometimes I will pick the other team just so we can razz each other during the game.(not when Bills play)

The NFL is quickly becoming overlawyered. I don't even know what a catch is anymore. "Oh, I don't know, Troy. I think the receiver's thumb was out of bounds, so they might call that back."
My family had season tickets to Oilers' games since, well, they were the Oilers, so I have to back the Texans, but sheesh, does the AFC South look more like a pillow fight than anything? And since I'm now living in Bears' country, I'm being forced to watch a lot of pretty bad football. "Parity" has become "Mediocrity".

I'm not sure why they should be. They've lost homefield advantage as a result. I can't see any advantage to losing to the DOLPHINS in such an important game, especially if they end up having to go to Denver for the AFC Championship game.

My only thought is they are trying to keep Tom healthy and gave up potential home filed for that. He has been getting pounded lately with the changing offensive line problems they are having.

I've heard that he's just been diagnosed with an ankle sprain. I didn't get to see Pats/Fins game; did he play the whole game? But you're right, their O-line hasn't been very good lately. I'm sure he'll be ready to play in 2 weeks.
The big surprise was the return of Peyton Manning. Didn't see that one coming.

Tom did play the whole Miami game except for maybe one snap (I was listening to the radio broadcast and multitasking) but the Pats are so banged up and Tom had so little protection that it was a tough game to listen to. If there's no running game and you can't protect your quarterback no good will come of it.

This has become a big quibble of mine. Injuries. I don't know what can be done to prevent injuries in the NFL, but it just FEELS like there are more and more players missing games, and we are reduced to watching the third stringers. This becomes a problem for the playoffs, especially if your starting QB is hurt, which is more often the case. Sometimes I see games where I don't recognize anyone.

If I was Tom Brady I would be remembering how my career really got started and how Drew Bledsoe's ended. I agree with you MM about the strangers in some of these games. It takes time for players to work well together and there isn't time right now for that to happen. Some of these players get one game to prove themselves and if they don't they're gone. Years ago I had read that part of minimizing injuries was in good conditioning and preparation during the off season but it seems like the game is getting more violent and no amount of prep can help. Someone suggested that if players didn't wear helmets the game would be less violent, no false sense of being protected. I do know that every season I question if it's time to stop following football.

I agree with your every work, SooMK! To your point about how it takes time for players to work well together, the same can be said about coaching staffs. Owners and fans alike want to win NOW.
Also, I get the impression that mini-camps, RTAs and pre-seasons are not being utilized correctly. It goes to your point about good conditioning and prep during the off season. While I can certainly understand a player's not wanting to risk injury during those times, it seems to me that with more competent training staffs, a player's fear might be minimized. I don't know why no one is calling me for advice! :P
I, too, wonder each year if my time might be better spent doing something besides following the NFL. I do know that each year, I watch less and follow with less interest. You can't take a deep breath without it being followed by a commercial.

All I can say is - I am so thankful I'm a Seahawks fan with a real man as QB, and not a Panthers fan with that poor excuse of a sore winner as a QB. We may be out, but at least my team has better men!

I am surprised the Hawks had such a poor first half. I expected far better of them.
They played very well in the second, but that first was just too much to make up.
Catch up is hard to do, in any game. I'd still give them an A for the second quarter effort.

I always tend to give Denver an edge. Training at Mile High is a distinct advantage as the development of a cardio-vascular system within a deprived oxygen atmosphere makes a tremendous difference when they play at the lower altitude stadiums.
Anyone that has hiked/hunted in the high mountains can testify to the huge differences in altitude exertions and rapid onset of tiredness.
Go Denver.

I will probably watch the Super Bowl. I do think it will be Peyton's last game and I want to see this Cam Newton. I'm glad Tom isn't playing. The Pats played a good season especially considering all their injuries and ended It losing by a small margin to a respected opponent.

As a Packers fan, I'm disappointed in our team this year. They can't seem to get it together on both sides of the ball for the same game. I've heard rumors that there is trouble between Rodgers and McCarthy, which is fueling the fire for those who wish McCarthy to be shown the door.
Of course, then there are the Bears. I think John Fox is a seat-filler. The McCaskey family needs to clean house from Ted Phillips on down. But again, as a Packers fan, I love every minute of the dysfunction.
Personally, I would love to see a Lions-Oakland Super Bowl. I don't think it will happen but I have a soft spot in my heart for Matthew Stafford. If the Packers can't win the division, I'd be happy to root for the Lions.

I wouldn't mind seeing a Raiders/Lions Super Bowl! It would sort of echo a Cubs/Indians World Series.

I loved the Bushes' coin toss. Brought tears to my eyes. Lady Gaga's half-time show was respectable. She left politics out.
Then I get to dialysis and there is too much snow on the dish (on the roof) and we get no reception. We had to listen to it on the radio. I could not believe the Falcons lost. I know how the fans feel. After what happened to the Seahawks....

My, how time has flown! Has everyone been having fun?
We're already 5 weeks into the new NFL season. How is everyone's team doing? Any general thoughts about how the season is progressing (no, let's not get into all of the protest stuff; that's a different thread!).
I'm becoming more and more turned off by the seemingly increasing frequency of catastrophic injuries. My Texans suffered two in just a few defensive series. JJ Watt, who has meant so much to the City of Houston during a very trying time, is out for the season; he missed much of the 2016-17 season due to injury, and now it's a recurring nightmare. Whitney Mercilus, one of the defensive triumvirate of Watt, Mercilus and Clowney, is also out for the season. I'm just waiting for Clowney to go down. The Texans have gone from being one of the most entertaining teams to watch to being a team you're just waiting to implode in on itself. Deshaun Watson, though, is a joy to behold.
Speaking of rookie qbs thrust all too early into the spotlight, the Bears' Mitch Trubiskey is still most decidedly a rookie. He had flashes of brilliance on MNF last night but also had flashes of rookieness.
In London I watched the Dolphins v Saints, and I can truly say that in all of my 50 years of watching the NFL, that was the most stupifyingly boring game I'd ever seen. All the games I've managed to see this year have been either very exciting or mindnumblingly dull.
So, how about you all? Any insightful thoughts about the season so far?

Oh, that's terrible. I'm sorry to hear this. I've always liked football, but I have to say that lately, I've gone off it a bit. My husband and I have constant disagreements about the NFL vs boxing. He can't understand how a sport whose goal it is to knock someone senseless should even be legal. I can understand that, but what makes it so different from the NFL? He counters that the intention in the NFL isn't to purposely hurt your opponent. I think that's irrelevant because there is not a week that goes by where an NFL player hasn't had a season ending injury, and it happens so often that we forget how life-altering this can be. Whether the injury is intentional or not doesn't really matter.
