Title: having sex while on dialysis
Post by: CAPD on October 01, 2005, 09:52:37 PM
Do you ever feel you've loss sex appeal (assuming you had it in the first place) because of being on dialysis? How do you deal with body image issues such as fistulas, dry skin, distended stomachs (if you dialyse over night) when trying to appeal to the opposite sex?

Obviously you are a guy.  And your problem might be trying to get "Miss America" when you may have to lower your standards.  Start thinking with your head.   The one on your shoulders! There are a lot of nice women out there "on dialysis" that are smart and loving.

Yes I know I do. I am always seeing woman looking at my snake of a fistula. Plus I am in a wheelchair so that makes them think I probably can't get an erection (I am in a wheelchair due to broken hips) so that makes me self conscious. But luckily in my situation I met my wife about a year before my dialysis career started, so I really don't care what other women think of me. But still I am a man and I do get self conscious.

As for lowering your standards as "Rerun" mentioned well there may some truth to that. You may need to be more realistic in the types of women who would be interested in you.

By the way welcome to the board and I hope you come and post often to help us get this site going. As you can see we are a new site and we need regular posters. Please do me a favor and go to the "Introduce Yourself" section and make a NEW topic to introduce yourself to the others. let us know your story and your background. Read some of the others introductions to get an idea of what I am talking about. Again welcome to the board.

Rerun, hi, what's "Miss American"? I am from England. Is it like blonde hair, blue eyes chicks? Sure, yeh, everyone likes blondes. I wouldn't say my standards are high, they're pretty much umm...normal. Pretty for me is like Monica Bellucci and ugly is like Renee Zellweger. No offense, but I don't fancy the women I have seen on dialysis (and I have seen a lot of them). I feel, just b/c am on dialysis doesn't mean I have to fancy a dialysis woman. I am friendly with some dialysis women, but I don't want to have sex with them or anything. Is that you in the pic? You look decent.

Epoman, hi, it is lucky you met your wife pre-dialysis b/c those of us who haven't are pretty much, excuse my French, f*cked. The thing is Epoman, I'm a perfectionist and I don't want to lower my standards. I like my standards as they are. Why do I have to get the "not so pretty ones"? Life isn't fair. Thanks for the welcome, Epoman.

I wish you would go to the "Introduce Yourself" section and tell us your story. All I know is your possiblely on CAPD and 24 years old. Anyway you mention life is not fair and I believe truer words were never spoken. Life is very unfair and sometimes life will beat the hell out of you.

Also I do not mean you have to get the "not so pretty ones" you need to re-evaluate YOUR beauty. Bottomline is unless you are handsome or have alot of money, pretty girls like handsome guys. Plain and simple. Don't use dialysis as an excuse either your handsome or your not.  ;)

Epoman is right.  Don't use dialysis as an excuse. Sounds like you may be too fussy. Give women the chance to meet the real you.If they don't want to know you because of your renal failure, they are probably not worth knowing. Looks aren't everything. I myself was on PD for 8 months and it did take a while to feel comfortable in front of my husband, but eventually it was o.k. I am lucky to allready have a partner. Surely there are some pommie girls who are nice. Good luck with it all. Liz ;D

You can easily have sex as a dialysis patient but I can't answer some of those questions as I am not a man. But I just wanted to say that you can talk to your dialysis social worker or if you don't want to you can just remember that you may have less energy or sexual interest depending on your hemoglobin level / hemocrit and iron levels. Plus in general we all feel more often crappy than healthy people.

Sorry I can't help you more. I find with sex I get tired easily .. so instead of 3 hour marathons it may be easier to have a lot more quickies ;)

Sex? What's sex?

I am so tired when I get home from teaching and dialysis three days a week you can imagine what happens at home.  Nothing.  The sex drive is busted, broken, gone with the wind.

Not only can low hemoglobin levles reduce libidio, but also, the high toxin levels which dialysis cannot clear often cause the pituitary gland to become unable to signal the testes and ovaries to produce sex hormones, which can cause impotence and infertility in men, premature menopause in women, and low or totally absent sex drive in both genders.  The low hemoglobin problem can be partially corrected with increased EPO, but since most patients cannot be brought up all the way out of anemia, this remains a negative influence on libido.  The low hormone levels can be corrected with hormone supplementation, but it seems that most nephrologists, who already feel themselves overworked just keeping their dialysis patients alive, never bother doing this.

For men there is the further problem that the accelerated development of arteriosclerosis and atherosclerosis during dialysis, as well as the influence of dialysis in promoting neurological disease, can cause erectile dysfunction independent of low libido.  In some patients this can be corrected by Viagra and related drugs, though many require papaverine injections or surgical implants.

Most men on dialysis will have some sexual dysfunction at some point.

This is caused by a few different things.

One thing is the medication that men are most likely on, which may include beta blockers which make it a bit harder for the heart to pump blood where it's needed (ahem!).

Other blood pressure medications may affect this as well.

The big thing though (and the one the doctors don't seem to talk about) is all the other stuff being pulled out of your body during dialysis.
It's not uncommon at all for men to have perfect sexual function - but no drive.
It's perfectly normal, but can be worked around.  Half the battle with "drive" is to just start.  You know, just like push starting your car when the starter's out! :)

Talk to your doctor about what you might be able to do to treat this.  Unfortunately for most young male dialysis patients, both fertility and drive go out the window.
Very difficult for those of us who are married and wanting to start a family.

To answer the next obvious question - yes, having a transplant typically reverses these issues (both fertility, and drive).

There was a great thread on this recently at the DS_Support list (http://members.dancris.com/~dalee/).

Kitkatz - my first reaction was the same as yours. But here´s my 2 cents anyway. . .
    Maybe they´ll have to put the right armed fistulas in front of the left arm fistulas for things to work out!  >:D.  But, I tend to agree with you, it would be very hard with the needles in our arms. As for the audience  -  it would be a lot more entertaining than TV and 4 hours might pass very quickly!   :popcorn;

Yeah but you would have to admit.  Watching a couple having sex in a dialysis clinic while one is hooked up to the machine would be very entertaining to watch but after 4 hours of watching, I'm more then sure that there will be a lot of horny patients going home that evening.  ;D

This thread is getting interesting so it begs another question.  I would have to ask it of those who are on home hemo.  I don't want to exclude those on PD but I just don't see how THAT might be possible.  Someone with a home hemo machine has to have been first.  You've heard of the mile high club, what would we call an exclusive club for dialysis patients?

Sex on dialysis?  All I can say is "yes, please."   ;D

I have to agree about the drive, as well as the function.  I'm on nitrates for high blood pressure, so I'll have to change my whole regimen to take advantage of the popular prescription aids.

Keeping the post PG, I counter that such activity only totalled maybe half of the fun, though.  So, now I just have twice as much "half the fun."

But, to quit with the levity, I can't deny it's sorely missed.

I have had sex while on PD as well. Wasn't so bad since I wasn't about to go 4 years without sex! I was on the Cycler every single night and he (my ex that I lived with) was a truck driver so not like I could dictate when it would be.  I was soooo afraid he might get caught on the tube. Seriously now I have known male dialysis patients that have conceived children with their wives while on (probably literally off) hemodialysis, so I can fairly state that yes men can have sex and reproduce.

I guess you can't believe everything you read.       ;)

We all have different experiences.  But as my Nephrologist told me when I began hemodialysis at age 24, "whatever you are able to do before starting treatment, you'll be able to do after treatment has begun."  He was right.  If you're in your 20's or 30's, you'll have fewer problems than when you are in your 40's and 50's.

Interesting topic (and yes I had a laugh at the literal interpretation of the topic line... hey I only wish I had good looking nurses in my unit... although the first dietician I saw is a cutie.... ) :)

Anyway getting back to serious stuff... my experience is mixed... I don't have a loss of drive and I have no problem with the equipment per se... so no need for any little blue pills... but I have found that my energy just drains out on me and usually at the worst time! And the worst part is it just goes all of a sudden so I'll be in the middle of.. well you can imagine and then all of a sudden it's like a super drain on the battery and the energizer bunny just falls in a heap. It really sucks! And not just for me of course but for the lady I am with.. This doesn't happen all the time, but also something I do find is.. gee I hope I won't get in trouble for being too explicit here keeping in mind the various audiences but I didn't see a rule against it :) anyway.. whn I orgasm I find thatejaculation is really poor.. like a little trickle rather than a flood (you know what I mean, right?!)... I don't really worry about that so much as I am more concerned with my partner's enjoyment, but I guess it is another sign of the various problems caused by kidney failure.

Just back to the light hearted side of things.. I find when on hemo and the BP is dropping a little too much and I fear I am in danger of entering the Cramp Zone I tend to try to think of similar themes to the above to get things... ahem.. moving (no, I don't need a blanket!)... sometimes it helps! (blush)

I find when on hemo and the BP is dropping a little too much and I fear I am in danger of entering the Cramp Zone I tend to try to think of similar themes to the above to get things... ahem.. moving (no, I don't need a blanket!)... sometimes it helps! (blush)

I just now saw this thread.  :-[

Girlfriend, i am hearing you with the tape allergy situation (and it was me that felt like the waterbed) :P  lol,  you should try using Medipore - Soft Cloth Surgical Tape.  When i was using the other tapes, paper and plastic it literally made my skin raw, now it has cleared up and this tape is wonderful.  I hope you find it and give it a try,  keep us posted k,

Thanks goofynina, I'll check into that tape!! I've been so-o-o-o gunshy about tape since I had such a horrible reaction, that I decline even band-aids after blood draws and have been wearing men's "wife beater" T's under my clothes and cutting holes in them and taping my tube to them ever since!! <-actually it works out pretty good, but along with the men's underwear I've been wearing because I found that they are the most comfortable-the waistband hits "just right" beneath my exit site, and all that's left to do is to walk around scratching my ass, burping the alphabet, and grading the deadly potential of my farts and I will have become my brother!!!  :D Ya know...Hubby HAS seen me in this get up...maybe the lack of zeal isn't merely due to the mechanics of the tube??? :o -just kidding!

Sex and dialysis treatment

It is possible that the tip of a peritoneal dialysis catheter might lie low in the pelvis and that sex could cause discomfort for a woman, but this does not seem to happen often. It is said that it is best to tape down a peritoneal dialysis catheter, or have some clothing over, in case your partner grabs hold of it during a moment of passion.

Research in Coventry (UK) has shown that people on peritoneal dialysis and haemodialysis both report similar sex lives (scoring 40/100 on a questionnaire). People with functioning kidney transplants did better, scoring 59/100. Although these scores do not sound very high, the general public do not score anywhere near 100.

I have no sex drive!  >:( Well i'm single right now anyways, so I guess it don't matter, but it still bother's me. I don't have any sexual urges or desires... this has really been going on since a very young age and I have been told before it was due to being on prednisone from age 12-17 non-stop, high doses and IV doses... I have 2 kids, but honestly, I actually had sex to please my partner, I didn't actually "feel the need" to have it... or want it. I feel so, wierd and left out I guess of the actual pleasures of sex and such.

I wanna talk to a dr about hormones and see if that could help me, but I dont even bother with it right now while on dialysis since I am single anyways... but just curious to what others think?

Sex? What's sex?

I am so tired when I get home from teaching and dialysis three days a week you can imagine what happens at home.  Nothing.  The sex drive is busted, broken, gone with the wind.

I'm with you!  Sex is the last thing on my mind...unless I'm watching the show "Lost".  There is way too much beefcake on that show not to at least think a little about sex!  But then again, anyone on the island is cured of whatever health problems they had when they arrived.  Where can I find an island like that?

WHAT THE.....  Grabs hold during a moment of passion..  :rofl; :rofl; :rofl;  I think there are few other "items" someone may grab hold of at that moment and my catheter is NOT one of them!

Fresenius supply a little pouch that is made of cotton,elastic and velcro. I keep this on at ALL times and it definatley looks after my catheter in those moments of need.  :P  :cuddle;   ;)

That comment sure doesn't boost anyone's self esteem. I think it's great that the people can get over the self conscientious of the tube associated with PD. It's a fact of treatment with this type of dialysis.

Kathleen as long as your hubby is still saying that ... i am sure you are happy to see him. It took me along time to get use to the cath hanging out of my belly. My husband has never cared but I did. My self-esteem went down hill fast. Trying to resume a "normal" life on dialysis is not always easy. Slowly I learnt not to worry anymore.   ::)   8)

When i was on dialysis the first time i was married. I had a catheter i always called "tubage". It was in my chest and hung out a bit. I was very self conscience about it. My ex wife and were not having sex at the time. I knew she couldn't stand the tubage.  I did notice my sex drive had diminished a bit. Although the Sports Illustrated swim suit issue still gave me a thrill. Now i am on dialysis for three years. I haven't had any sex in six years. I asked for some Viagra but was told it would hurt my heart. It seems blood pressure meds. and dialysis hurt the sex drive. Now i look at a sports illustrated swim suit issue and think "They might as well be farm animals in swim suits." The only "thrill i feel is in my fistula!"

Lucky you! :)

I was put on prednisone when I was 12, before I developed a sex drive, so the prednisone, while it didn't "ruin" it, it produes a hormone in your body that your body is supposed to let out to say "hey, your horny.." but b/c the prednisone makes it, your body thinks it already let it off, when it actually didn't so,  don't get the signal saying "hey, your horny!" lol.... I have to have a hormone Dr do blood tests and give me a hormone, however I don't even have a partner at the moment, so thats last on my list of things to do.  :lol;

I have already though of having sex on dialysis when I start it at home.  Don't know if my fiance will be game for it though.  The only thing that scares me is all the tubing.  I think having sex while hooked up to the machine is the ultimate way of saying "Screw you...you think you can keep me from doing what i want, when I want.  Dialysis is not gonna keep me down"

I've never done it while hooked up, that would be way too uncomfortable, but I have done it just after and just before!

Kit. You don't do it side by side. You do it one on top of the other. With that, the chairs
would be just wide enough to do it. They DO have curtains too. Of course there may be
some loud noises, but considering what's been reported by other members, I'd say it
wouldn't be any worse that that. Depends upon how enthusiastic you get, I suppose....

i don't think anyone is seriously asking about having sex while on dialysis, literally, that is,
but is more seriously asking about the possibilities of having sex as a dialysis patient.

that said, i suggested to my wife, after i started peritoneal dialysis, that we re-invent our musical duet, (Novak and Wilson) and go on a tour, calling it 'The Novak and Wilson Dialysis Tour.'
I could do an exchange while we played, i suggested, and it would raise awareness, be a novel and original experience for the audience, and keep us playing music, at least.

She hasn't gotten back to me on that one....yet... :popcorn;

But seriously, folks....heeheee :P

for me, the expansion of my belly since i began on peritoneal dialysis has been rather un-nerving...and, a little depressing, really. i guess i was a little (?) vain about my belly. i used to have a six-pack, now, i have a keg! i think the tube turns her off, too, so we just put sex on the back burner, i guess. sometimes, i get the old 'urge'- to tell the truth. but, i haven't really found viagra much help, and it does cost too much, with the income we've been reduced to surviving on.

i believe it would vary widely, from patient to patient, and it probably depends a lot on one's previous attitude towards sex and the importance of it in one's life.

i'm hoping that the night-time 'cycler' will change that aspect for me, somehow... but, time will tell, as it always does...

I'm hoping that the night-time 'cycler' will change that aspect for me, somehow... but, time will tell, as it always does...

Light, there is no need to put sex on the back burner. Kathleen and I haven't slowed down at all and you shouldn't either. The heck with your six pack it's sex pack that counts. Get back on there and ride. ;D

Mister your lucky its your Birthday...  :cuddle; Or else... :-X

I guess I should have asked before I posted. Sorry :-*

i don't think anyone is seriously asking about having sex while on dialysis, literally, that is,
but is more seriously asking about the possibilities of having sex as a dialysis patient.

that said, i suggested to my wife, after i started peritoneal dialysis, that we re-invent our musical duet, (Novak and Wilson) and go on a tour, calling it 'The Novak and Wilson Dialysis Tour.'
I could do an exchange while we played, i suggested, and it would raise awareness, be a novel and original experience for the audience, and keep us playing music, at least.

She hasn't gotten back to me on that one....yet... :popcorn;

But seriously, folks....heeheee :P

I've never been self conscious of my body when it came to sex with my hubby. We've always had a very active sex life, and nothing's changed since I began dialysis. Like someone before mentioned, timing is everything, just before, and just after. Granted some of the mechanics have changed a bit due to the tube hanging outta my belly, but we've "worked" our way around it!! LOL!! Sex to us isn't solely about intercourse anyway. It's knowing that we desire one another, still finding each other sexy, it's holding hands, hugging, stroking one another....it's the suggestive words and behavior, we've found that foreplay is as satisfying as sex even if the actual act never takes place--it's a mind set!! (I guess I feel that way 'cause I'm gettin' plenty!!-lol!!) We actually did it for the first time while I was connected last week (our timing was a bit off, and the urge struck...what was I gonna say? No? NOT EVEN!!) We waited for the dwell cycle, when we knew we had atleast an hour, and I was curious anyway...I'd advise anyone to take care of business before or after though--rapid breathing tends to be a bit difficult with a belly full of fluids, and the mechanics become increasingly more difficult, but the tubing once situated was the least of my worries! --feeling like I was having a heart attack was first and foremost on my mind!!! *blush* I think that's enough said about that! LMAO!!

if it's been asked i'm sorry in advance. i didn't read all of this thread because i was laughing my ass off.

i'm a lesbian on dialysis. Hemo in -center. I am having trouble having sex, not because I don't have the drive but (and this is embarassing to say) because the toxins i guess just make the smell to bad.  if anyone knows what i'm talking about and knows how to fix it please help me? I really don't want to talk to my doc about it. ya'll seem to know more anyway.

HELP ME? :'(

Sorry Jellybean, i would definetly talk to the doc or find yourself a female nurse to discuss this with, maybe a douche would be ok?  I hope you find a solution (and if you would be kind enough to share it with us)  This is an open board honey, we talks about anything and everything so no worries, k? k!  :cuddle;

well, what kind of doctor should I ask? my neurologist doesn't really pay enough attenton to me for me to ask that kind of question to. My general is a very good doctor and I could ask him but he's a male and I am not to comfortable with it. I'm also having other problems but that has to do with the fact that I'm horny and can't get any. (shes guna hate me for saying that)

my doc wants to switch me to PD. do u think that will help it any? I was 11 when I was on PD last so I don't really know if it had this effect.

chemical smells? must he a hemo thing...I'm on PD and I don't have that problem....??? I'm still urinating, and my urine smells horrific, but haven't noticed any other odors...curiosity got the best of me, so I called my PD Nurse and asked- she was finishing up lunch with some of the other Nurses, including a couple of the hemo Nurses, so she posed the question to the group while I was on the phone. The general consensus was: it's a gyno problem not related to dialysis, possibly a yeast infection. To their knowledge, no one has complained of a vaginal odor related to dialysis, chemical or otherwise...body odor could be attributed to possible uremia, and odorous urine caused by renal vitamins. My suggestion would be to see your gyno and rule out any possible infections, and then pose the question to your Nephrologist if it persists. That's what I love about this board!! Everyone has a unique perspective, no questions are off limits, and we all learn as we go together!!!

Padda, I know exactly how you feel! I went on dialysis two days after my honeymoon...you can guess how romantic that trip was, since I had been ignoring symptoms I shouldn't have. I'm thinking we now need to repeat the honeymoon (Negril, Jamaica...any excuse to go back there!!)

You really should go again. I know you feel about being sick on your honeymoon. The first day we got to Vegas on our honeymoon, I ended up throwing up all night. My husband ended up taking me to urgent care, where I spent the netire next day on a gurney hooked up to IVs.  It took me 2 more days to back on my feet again. What a way to start the honeymoon! I feel for ya!

Yeah, it was better. We weren't to thrilled with Vegas itself tho. To crowded and too much pushy sales of a timeshare condo every time you turned around.

I threw up an average of once a day. We were at an all-inclusive resort (all you can eat and drink; non-motorized water sports; and entertainment), and I didn't get to enjoy any of it. The food was too rich, I certainly didn't feel like drinking, and all I wanted to do was lay on the beach or in the room and sleep.

My body chemistry was changed when i got sick. I used to love Brut deodorant when i was a kid but once i got sick it no longer worked for me. I was way smelly.
So i do know chemistry does change. I also notice i dont get any, if at all, insects bites while everyone around me gets them. Im sure they can smell the chemicals.
Natural repellent. Funny thing is that i had various females tell me i have a really nice natural aroma. They swear i had some lotion on or something. Go figure.

I also noticed the insect bite thing while i was on the big d. Before my kidney failure I used to be the one that got bitten to pieces, and when I started to get 'smelly' from all the toxins etc, I noticed that I hardly got bitten. One of the bonuses of kidney failure !

Ive been on dialysis since 98 and have plenty of sex, It hasn't affected my sex drive one bit,at times its even made me feel like I'm on Viagra,no joke. Like when they had me on a Epo Study, i was hard all the time. Every since 06 when  they put this AV Graft i have now in my abdomen, its like off and on, sometimes i feel like i need some Viagra and other times i feel normal but I'm still sexually active,that'll never change. I just wonder if my access has something to do with it, like maybe its stealing my blood supply

   Gonna be blunt so hang on.
   It comes in waves (being horny) Some days just the thought of seeing a vagina makes me cringe while other days I can't stop thinking about it.  Take advantage when the mood strikes.
When I was a teen I asked my doctor about floppy pecker syndrome. He said it had something to do with my fistula and the amount of blood flow.  So take it if ya need it..

                       Good Luck  :bandance;

I don't see why the Tech had to be fired or the patient transfered. If they are both consenting adults and it was not in the center, what is the issue?

It is difficult enough to meet a partner in life. If you are a dialysis patient it just becomes more of a challenge. Apart from the lack of energy to "put yourself" out there, there is constant negativity regarding the way your body looks. I am sure I would have them knocking down the door once they saw the tube hanging from my stomach to below my knees. Lucky for me I was already married before dialysis and my husband is a gem.
Title: Re: having sex while on dialysis
Post by: nursewratchet on December 11, 2008, 02:14:04 PM
The tech was fired by the Dr.  A boundary issue.  Other patients could have percieved that patient was getting "special treatment" from her boyfriend.  First on, extra time, etc... and there were complaints of him putting her on first, paying more attention.  The patient transferred to another clinic after he was let go.
Title: Re: having sex while on dialysis

He or she ought to have asked for a transfer as soon as they decided to go on a date.
Title: Re: having sex while on dialysis
Post by: RichardMEL on December 11, 2008, 07:52:52 PM
yeah I can see this from both sides. If I ever dated someone at the unit I'd guess I'd have to transfer out because you can see it. Even if you both agreed to no special treatment etc if the word got out you were dating even the IDEA that it could happen would spread.

Heck at my unit some old guy complains when I get put on earlier sometimes. Why? Not because I'm having sex with anyone there (ugh, no candidates anyway despite them all being absolutely lovely LOL) but he comes in way earlier than he should, so then whinges when I come in on time and get on because he's been waiting longer. Well duh dude.. if you come in extra early on the off hope a spot will be available (sometimes yes, sometimes no) and there isn't a spot you will have to wait longer... how you can then complain that I got better treatment because I got on when I come in is stupid... but you know what? This one time they told me to go and wait even though my chair was ready because they didn't want to upset the old guy who complains. I felt like complaining about THAT but decided to not stoop to that level. Sheesh!!! Luckily another time this happened the nurse that was looking after me said screw that. The machine's ready and put me on.....

Ive never even considered doing that, although it would be very easy for me. i have my AV graft in my abdomen and have to lower my pants and lay all the way back in the chair the whole treatment,so all she would have to do is hop on me and ride. My husband says the catheter is just one more good reason to wear a sexy corset!  Before I got sick he was always coming up with good reasons to wear corsets - he's soooo thoughtful!  We have no problems with the logistics of it (I'm on a cycler and it doesn't make any difference - just have to make sure you don't get hooked on the tube) but there's definitely a problem with my tiredness.  Interesting reading back over this thread about the hormones etc.  I might look into that.  I'd like to 'want to' a bit more often!! Ha ha.

I think you could do it in a dialysis chair - but you'd have to be very brave about everyone watching ha ha.  It can't be that much more difficult that the back of a car...ooops I'm giving away too much information here eh?  I'm only talking about sex with a PD catheter in - I think it's a mental problem more than a physical one.

Interesting thread, coming from the spouse here though, I can say that it has officially been 3 1/2 years since we've had sex.... at least in the traditional sense.

Dialysis for a man can be difficult in that way from what I've heard. We've tried Viagra and all the others, with no success.  With that being said, there are many things you can do as a couple to have intimacy and fulfillment.

It can be difficult for the spouse, who's sexual desires have not diminished. But the key is to create intimacy in every area of your life. And as we all know, intimacy is so much more than just "sex".

Sexuality and Intimacy on In-Center Hemodialysis

Being on dialysis can affect how you feel about how attractive and desirable you are to your partner. Changes in how your body looks because of dialysis and not feeling physically well can make you less interested in being intimate. But relationships are more than just sex and intimacy can take many forms. Holding hands, taking quiet walks, remembering and sharing special moments can help both you and your partner to remember what is really important in your relationship.

Talk with your partner about how dialysis makes you feel about your body and how you think it affects your partner. Don’t assume that if your partner doesn’t approach you that it’s because he or she no longer finds you attractive. They may not know if your doctor has told you that having sex is okay. They may be afraid of hurting you or damaging the catheter if you have one. Talking things through can help you and your partner to discover new ways to be intimate with each other.
Men with kidney failure may have problems with lack of desire for sex or with erectile dysfunction. This may be somewhat less likely with nocturnal hemodialysis than with conventional hemodialysis, because you get about twice as much treatment. Kidney failure can lead to reduced levels of testosterone. This can be measured with a blood test, and treated with injections or a skin patch. Even though it can be hard to talk to someone about your sexuality concerns, your doctor and social worker are trained to listen and provide advice and referrals to other professionals that can help you. Fertility can be reduced in men and women who have kidney failure. If you want to have children, talk with your doctor before you attempt pregnancy. He or she can evaluate your current and past medical history, offer options or refer you to a specialist if necessary. Men with kidney failure have fathered a child and women have given birth. Every person’s situation is different, however. If it’s not physically possible for you to have a child, it’s important to remember that there are many ways in which you can make a difference in the life of a child.

:o So..It's been a couple of days since I checked in, I'm scanning the posts, and THIS is the thread I fall into?!!  :lol; I'm a "brand new" PD'er, so I don't know how much my  :twocents; will weigh in- but here goes!! -Will admit that I haven't "hooked up" while hooked up, but am thinking that I would have to agree with the other PD'ers--it's gotta feel like a waterbed? Only I'm thinking I would feel like the waterbed mattress, and one of us would end up sea sick??!! I find that mine and hubby's "appetites" haven't changed, but the mechanics certainly have!! I'm nearing 6wks post op cath. insertion, so the exit site can still be a bit tender it seems, and WHAT THE HECK ARE YA SUPPOSED TO DO WITH THE CATH?? (jus' lettin' it swing ain't the thing, and I've developed a SERIOUS tape allergy!!) *LMAO  I'm LOVING these forums!!

ok as a young PDer i must say, have done the dirty while hooked up, find its better to do during the dweel, i never had really high volumes so ddnt get the waterbed effect, unless i ate a lot of salt...  hubby wouls take the tubing and use it like horse reins, as long as wee ddnt pull on it it was all good....

Actually, a couple of the nurses at my center give me enough smiles and looks to make me feel attractive, even though I'm a bald, 59 year-old man.  It must be my blue eyes.  My wife says they look good with a blue shirt.  People put way too much emphasis on looks.  I dated a lot of attractive women with hearts of stone.  My friends say my wife is ugly, but I love her no end.  She is the best person I have ever met in my life.  If you are alone I'd advise you to cast a wide net.  The more you fish the more you catch.

I don't worry about it because I've been happily married for almost 17 years..... Who else am I trying to impress anyway?  My husband knows me inside and out and that's all that matters to me, I'm not out there trying to impress anyone.   A central venous cath has been sticking out above my left breast for over a year now because of dialysis and my husband doesn't seem bothered by it one bit, he loves me regardless, he even offered me one of his kidneys   last year      :)

I LOVE a sense of humor, I think that's how I've survived through all of this, having a wicked, funny and  warped sense of humor-it helps to make things a little easier.     ;D

I am new to the boards here, and hoping I don't offend anyone. My husband (the soon to be dialysis patient) and I have enjoyed a very active and frequent sex life our 39 yrs of marriage (we were high school sweethearts). His issues with diabetes, weight gain, and health getting worse over the last few yrs have made it not as frequent. He worked out of state as a contractor for 16 yrs, so when he was home we made the most of what little time we had together over a weekend. Since his job her became permanent, he has had many health issues piling up in the last 3 yrs. Sex still happens, but for a while we had to find different positions that worked with his back pain and stuff. Before it got to that, we had found using a vibrator for foreplay worked great. We also started using lubricants that we found at a sex store (gasp, I was so embarrassed going in them). We also have a running joke about me using household appliances and objects as sex toys when he wasn't home so we laugh about it a lot and my daughters say I can't go into Home Depot unless I have someone with me to keep me out of trouble. Vibrators are a big help. I prefer the ones the drug stores sell that don't look like a sex object and aren't very big. I gotta say, out of trying to be funny and make my hubby and daughters laugh, I felt the vibration yesterday on my husband's new fistual. I was wondering if theres a way to make it more powerfull so I can use it for my pleasure?
Yeah I am sick, and so is my hubby. Love the discussion that has been going on here.... :yahoo;

Hi folks. I am brokenpole. I am the husband to that woman known as smokinbeaver. You know, the one that talked about using farm implements.

We have joked for years about her using everything from door knobs to jack hammers. But you haven't lived until you have seen your wife trying to get "frisky" with a ceiling fan  :rofl;  :yahoo;

do not pay attention to that man behind the curtain (Brokenpole). The wizard has not seen me try to use a ceiling fan. Its just something we have told someone once and a few people actually believed it. I do think the chairs at the dialysis center might work for some people, and for a few folks it could be entertainment, but for me having a crowd watching, it would be distracting. I agree seeing the techs and nurses getting all upset running around trying to stop a couple would be funny. Be a great way to p.o. a center if you don't like the staff. Don't most people like using blankets because they are cold? At least you can hide the nudity....I bet you could get a story coverage in the newspaper or some internet site would pick it up...

Hey grumpy, just a vibrator and brokenpole's pole now, lol. He had a chest catheter put in and started dialysis at the hospital while they are waiting for the fistula to heal. The chest catheter bothers him sometimes, and we;ve been afraid to have any "fun" since he started the dialysis. He has had 3 hemo treatments at the dialysis center here so far.

I'll let you know Grumpy, we haven't tried it yet since he started dialysis. I suspect his libido will be effected though. Hoping its not gone completely, but we did find out his testosterone was down several months ago. I think dialysis would remove that even further. I have heard about Viagra causing heart and blood pressure problems and being contraindicated with anyone on center heart medicines. He doesn't take either one.

speaking of low testosterone, is there anything natural, like foods that make it higher? or something besides medication?

A little known fact: When Viagra was first created, it was for bp management. Unexpected side effect changed marketing plan and now you know it as the blue pill.

hey it would be a curious situation, maybe others could self stimulate watching and some folks would be surprised they rose to the occassion. In some centers where folks are older, it could be fun for them....I can see the nurses and techs having a fit trying to get the couple to stop and checking the dialysizers on all the patients as alarms go off....

smokingbeaver - you paint a great picture - clinic techs running all over the place to reset alarms, a couple in a chair with a blanket bouncing up and down.   If I ever have to go back to hemo, I think I'll try it - even if the wife and I have to fake it.  Would love to see the reactions.  Grumpy

I went to the dialysis center yesterday while my husband was in the chair to talk to the dietician the first time. Turned out to be nice understanding lady. Didn't learn much that I haven't already found out at this informative site, and what I've found searching the internet and books. She did say my husband can have tangerines, and gave me info on how to soak potatos the night before to cook them for dinner so they have less potassium. She took me in to visit with Jon afterwards. The nephrologist came while I was there. Husbands labs are good, postassium and phosphorous are low. Jon asked him if he should stop taking the potassium pills he has had him taking. He needs more iron and Epogen.  While I was there I also got to talk to the 2 technicians, 2 guys. Didn't see any nurses. I went and got a tech to ask him if I could help my husband pee in a jug. The problem he is having during dialysis is that 4hrs is a long time waiting for it to be done to go pee. With Jon being handicapped, and attached to the machines, its hard for him to do it without help. He is a sit down kind of guy now. So they brought screens and untaped the lines so he could stand. I assisted him, and then we both told them the discussions on here about a couple having sex while in the chair. They thought it would be hilarious!!! So i :yahoo;ts a real relaxed place with people working that have a good sense of humor. The guys enjoy my husband because he jokes around with them. They said they would leave the screens up for us if we wanted to try. :)

Chris, I like your idea of lights, hand puppets doing a show on the screens! That would be something to see. Some folks did that to Jon and I when we were out camping once. They pulled their trucks up behind our tent and turned the headlights on while we were engaged...we didn't get mad, but it was distracting...Glad I was wearing a long flannel nightgown.

Found this on NKF:
SEXUALITY AND CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE
Many people think that sexuality refers only to the act of sexual intercourse. Sexuality includes many factors, such as how people feel about themselves, how they communicate with others and how willing they are to build a relationship. In addition, sexuality involves a wide range of pleasurable sexual activities that may or may not include intercourse, such as touching, hugging and kissing. Being a sexual person is healthy. Lovemaking may provide a way of feeling "normal" for people who are chronically ill.

How can kidney disease affect sex life?
Kidney disease can cause physical and emotional changes that may affect your sex life. The chemical changes that occur in your body with kidney disease affect hormones, circulation, nerve function and energy level. These changes usually lower sexual interest and/or sexual ability. Physical changes may cause people with kidney disease to feel less attractive sexually. Many of the medicines used to treat high blood pressure may affect sexual functioning.

Use of steroids may cause weight gain, acne, and unwanted hair growth or loss. Surgical scars can cause patients to feel unattractive. Medical changes and changes in self-image may affect sexual interest and functioning.

Is sexual intercourse safe for kidney patients?
Patients and their partners may worry that sexual activity could cause the patient's death or harm the dialysis access or transplanted kidney. No limitations need to be placed on kidney patients sexually. If sexual activity does not place pressure or tension on the access site, it will not cause damage. After receiving a transplant, it is important to wait until the scar has begun to heal. Once the doctor says it is all right to resume sexual activity, there is no reason to worry about damaging the transplanted kidney. Fear can cause people to avoid sexual activity needlessly.

For some couples, sexual intercourse is not possible. Some may feel that sex is not as important as it once was. Activities such as touching, hugging, and kissing provide feelings of warmth and closeness even if intercourse is not involved. Professional sex therapists can recommend alternative methods.

Will a child's sexual development be affected by kidney failure?
This depends on the child's age when kidney failure occurs. Young children with kidney disease are usually smaller than other children their age. They are also slower to develop sexually. Children who are on dialysis probably will have slower growth and sexual development than children who have kidney transplants. If a teenager has kidney disease, sexual development may slow down or even stop. For example, teenage girls may not have periods. Changes due to kidney failure and treatment may make the teenager feel different from his or her friends. Parents should express their concerns about growth and sexual development to the doctor. Parents of a child or teenager who is ill must fight the impulse to protect their child from the pain of growing up. Self-worth, independence, and sexual identity are important for teenagers. Parents need to talk openly with their children about physical, emotional, and sexual issues. Support groups for children and teenagers with kidney disease can be helpful. Contact a renal social worker or the National Kidney Foundation to find out if support groups are available near you.

Can you get AIDS from a transplant and risk giving AIDS to your sex partners?
Kidneys for transplantation and blood transfusions are now routinely tested for the AIDS virus. The risk of getting AIDS from a transplant or transfusion in the last few years is very small. Therefore, the risk of giving AIDS to a sex partner is small as a result of a transplant. Most health departments and health clinics can do a simple confidential blood test for HIV. Until the results of this test are known, use of a condom lowers the risk of passing the AIDS virus to a sex partner. Practicing safe sex is important for everyone.

Can a kidney transplant from someone of the opposite sex affect me sexually?
No. The sex of the kidney donor has no physical effect on the recipient's ability to function sexually or on sexual preference (heterosexual, homosexual, or bisexual).

Do transplant patients have fewer sexual problems than dialysis patients?
Generally, transplant patients have fewer sexual problems than dialysis patients because they may have fewer physical problems that affect their sex life like fatigue or anemia. But, having a transplant does not make them less prone to sexual concerns. The level of interest in and ability to have sex varies with things like the quality of the relationship, age, stress level, and physical conditions.

Will sexual problems get worse the longer dialysis continues?
This depends on the person. Having kidney failure, like any other chronic diseases, means that the body is in a weaker overall state of health. However, as the body adjusts to the treatment, the kidney patient should feel better physically and emotionally, and interest in sex may return to its earlier level. It is important to be patient and allow time to get used to the kidney disease and treatment. Being flexible and having a positive attitude about yourself and about sex may lower the chances of having severe sexual problems.

Can you tell whether sexual problems are due to physical or emotional causes?
Yes. This requires a complete medical, psychological and sexual history of the patient and his/her partner. Medicines should be reviewed for sexual side effects and changed if possible. Blood tests should include hormone levels and blood sugar levels to check for diabetes. Men can be checked to see if nerve and blood supply to the penis are good and if they can have an erection. If no physical problem is found, an emotional cause must be considered.

What can be done if the problem is physical?
Several options are available for men whose penis will not get or stay hard (erection). Penile implant surgery places inflatable or semi-rigid rods into the penis. In some cases, surgery can improve blood flow to the penis. If the man does not want surgery, male hormones may be given. Oral and injectable medications can cause an erection. External suction devices can make the penis hard enough for intercourse, but they require time and hand strength. Doctors with special training in impotence can give information on all options as well as their advantages, disadvantages, and side effects.

Women patients usually have less vaginal wetness and may have pain during sexual activity. Lower hormone levels can cause vaginal dryness. Use of a water-soluble vaginal lubricant can lower or stop pain associated with intercourse. Do not use petroleum jelly because it can increase the risk of infection. Some women may be unable to have a climax or may need more time to get "turned on" because of loss of energy, hormone changes, or medications for high blood pressure. A change in blood pressure medicine or extra hormones may be needed. Your doctor can provide information on options.

What can be done if the problem is psychological?
Feeling worried, anxious and depressed is normal when faced with a serious loss such as kidney failure. These emotions can cause loss of energy and lower interest in many activities including sex. If a sexual problem does occur, embarrassment and guilt often follow. Fear that the problem will happen again may cause the person to shy away from sexual situations. Relaxation exercises can help to control these fears. Regular physical exercise and activity help keep the mind busy and can improve physical condition and body image. If sexual problems continue, sex therapy can help. Even if the problem is psychological, some of the treatment options mentioned for physical problems may be helpful.

Can sex therapy help?
Sex therapy deals with the sexual problems of couples and individuals. The first step in sex therapy may be sexual education for the individual or couple. The therapist may assign activities to be done at home. These include communication exercises, stress reduction activities, and practicing ways of improving skills in giving and receiving enjoyable touches. Sex therapy can help with problems such as low sexual interest, trouble in reaching climax or reaching climax too soon, pain during sexual activity, and erection difficulties. Therapy also can help a person work through the effects of chronic illness on sexual functioning.

A sex therapist can be a psychiatrist, psychologist, physician, or social worker. Look for someone who is licensed and who has advanced training and experience in sexuality and sexual problems. Charges vary and may be covered partly by insurance.

What can kidney patients do to help themselves?
Take an active role in learning about kidney disease and treatment. Follow the prescribed diet and fluid limits. Take all medications properly and tell the doctor of any side effects. Ask for an exercise program to help muscle tone, strength, and endurance. Your doctor and dietitian can suggest a weight gain or loss program, if needed. Lead a healthy lifestyle. Be aware of other things that could affect your sexual functioning, such as drinking too much alcohol and smoking.

When I still had that someone special I experienced what your talking about.  I couldn't do much but it seemed after I climaxed that I was having a heart attack.  I think it's just basically that having sex increases heart rate and finishes can cause blood pressure to raise and drop and not having much energy to begin with its just rough on our bodies.  Having sex is not much different physically then trying to work out to some of us.  I found when I was diagnosed in my twenties and on dialysis it wasn't as bad but now that I'm back on dialysis in my 30's it's a lot more exhausting.

Goth - you bring it up the same way you did here -"I have a concern that when I have sex I get extremely short of breath."  your doc has probably heard the same concern from other patients many times.  If you have an OB/GYN it might be easier to talk to him/her. but if it's connected to your kidney disease or dialysis your neph would be the one who would know what to do to fix it.  I'm really lucky with my neph, he's very easy to talk to and always asks how things are going in what he calls my non-CKD life.  I hope you have a doc that you can discuss this with, I know it's a hard topic to bring up.  I think we'd all be a little embarrassed, but it will be worth the embarrassment to have an answer and a solution.   :cuddle;

Do you see a gynecologist regularly?  Perhaps that would be easier.  Bodies are made to function and when they aren't running smoothly we have to overcome shyness, fear, embarrassment etc. to get answers.  Doctors train for years to work with bodies, all the parts of bodies and their functions and sex is just a normal part of what functioning bodies are designed to do if the owner of the body wants to.  Same goes for pooping, peeing, breathing, eating etc.  Please ask your doctor.

Is this thread about having sex during dialysis sessions or about the way dialysis effects sexuality?  I've only had sex ten or twelve times while getting dialysed.  The circumstances were unusual.  Dialysis does not seem to have effected my libido or my physical abilities.  I am now in my seventh month of a transplant and sex, as aways, is good.  I was fortunate to be able to maintain my good health while on dialysis.

Because our home Nxstage machine is part of our family and sits right next to the dialysis chair. We just couldnt feel ok about having sex in front of the "family".
I think the machine might disaprove anyway. Or it might get jealous and ALARM loudly.

I still worry about being able to have sex. My husband's fistula is finally healed and working with dialysis after more surgeries. He found his testosterone is the lowest this dr had ever seen, and the dr inserted seeds of testosterone in is butt, but so far they aren't working much yet, even with Viagra. He gets erect, but its hard to sustain long enough. Maybe that's how it is with having diabetes many yrs, and dialysis after a yr? We aren't giving up, keep trying, but it hurts him. Do guys get where they can't even climax anymore? I had never heard of that. The desire is still there, but after a while a guy gets tired and frustrated it seems. I feel badly, like I have failed. Should have known this was coming I guess. He will be 60 the end of January, and I am 59....Hopefully its better for the younger girls and guys.

If erection is the issue you can ask the doctor about Caverject (if your husband is willing to inject himself). It is more effective than viagra and works quicker(immediate). It is not painful with the very thin needles used and unlike oral meds has few side effects. Also a better erection may lead to easier orgasm .
If only orgasm is the issue, then it could be the meds he is on . Many meds cause anorgasmia. Also there are meds that can help achieve orgasm such as the anti depressant Wellbutrin . Talk to your doctor about the problems. Dont give up if it is important . There are ways around most issues.

Instead of joining the discussion on penis problems, I would like to comment on the attractiveness of women - even if you have a fistula.

Once upon a time I thought the ideal female should have big mammary glands and a wide farkle (butt).  Tain't so.  I discovered that I am attracted to intelligent women who are well informed on a wide variety of topics, enough so we may engage in meaningful conversation.   There is nothing attractive to me about a women who is submissive and wants me to lead her around.  I also quiver when in the company of "earthy" females.  That's right, I am not a subscriber of political correctness.

Where do you find these females?  In everyday life, provided you get out once in a while.  Socialize.  Don't hunt.  In the everyday life , I get along with women far better than men.  I don't know why that is.

GLM

seriously hun try to not feel embarassed about talking to the docs about this kind of thing - trust me, they've heard it all before!! And also seriously yeah it feels funny to discuss that stuff, but it is a health issue for you and related to your kidney disease/dialysis. There's nothing to be ashamed or shy about - I mean you don't need to discuss er.. positions and stuff, but generally the concerns. I've been there myself having to ask questions in that general area, and to a female doc no less.. but really it's better to discuss it than not.. even if they can't help it is important to know, because it can often relate to other issues - eg: breathing - heart exertion  - blood pressure etc... it could be important to let them know.

Anyway like some others have said I've had the "power outage" kind of issue while involved in the deed and trust me, when you're the one doing "most of the work" (as you put it :) ) it's even more embarrassing for a guy!! Still, had to accept that is life and find other ways to.. do things.

the breathing issues could also be related to weight or other factors that you may need  to consider. Also if you feel more comfy discussing with an obgyn (I think poppy suggested that?) that could also work :)

good luck!

ps: GLM - shy?! OMG I don't believe it!!! :) jk

Alright so...a couple of years ago, I was actually led to the forums via this topic from Googling something along the lines of "sex drive and dialysis". I remember being humored by some of the posts, saddened by others and feeling a little more knowledgeable about the topic as a whole. I wish I had joined up then but...I won't go into my reasons for procrastinating in this thread. Sometimes I would come back and stalk. xD

Sex and dialysis has been a major issue for me. The psychological effect that having a 2 foot long tube hanging out of my stomach had on me was pretty devastating. I was 29 and had never experienced body issues before. I remember looking in the mirror at it for the first time naked after it had healed for about a week..thinking well, it's no so bad. It could be worse. And then it did get worse when they added another foot of the extension onto it. I recall asking the nurse with a little nervous laugh, "This comes off after my treatment is over, right?" Aaaand...no.

When I finally was well-enough to get back into a somewhat normal routine, I started dating again. I had lost all the swelling in my face and stomach and was able to fit into my jeans again. My first adventure in dating as a dialysis patient was with a really great girl (yes, I've dated men and women and don't have a preference. down boys.) she accepted me for who I was but had some issues of her own which made her very self-absorbed and was never really interested in mine. We only had sex once but I was so worried about my catheter getting in the way that I couldn't focus. I don't wear the PD belt. It's clunky, uncomfortable and shows beneath anything I wear and is really not something I want even touching my own body during sex especially. Just my dressing to cover the exit site and a bit of micropore tape to anchor it to the inside of my hip. The length itself simply runs down the side of my leg and I don't really notice it unless I roll onto that side in bed or it's flopping around with nowhere logical to hide during sex. I WAS working on a skin colored "slip" like a tube top for the waist that is made out of a barely noticeable material like panty hose nylon to cover it up discreetly and keep it safe. But other things got in the way and my inspiration retreated.

 I was briefly with a man who was great in the sack. Attractive, nice body, interested in learning about my ESRD. It was difficult to keep up with his energy but I somehow managed. He asked me questions about my catheter to make sure nothing would get injured. Took it easy when I needed. I would get a little winded, but not too much. He said the catheter or its appearance didn't bother him at all so that was a slight comfort. We didn't work out because it turns out he was hell bent on getting married and having kids...not something that's on my radar at all.

Another guy who I had on-off relationship with in the past was going through some health stuff and we got close again. I will tell you, even if you are not a kinky person in the bedroom...having your partner blind-folded does wonders for the problem of catheter/fistula-anxiety. And..I don't want to get into too much detail, but due to medications possibly, dryness can be an issue. There is absolutely nothing wrong with using a little (or a lot) of water-based lube (don't use silicone). Incorporate it into foreplay so you aren't fumbling for it later. Another thing I'd noticed after about a year that was really bothering me, was odor. I started realizing that since I still make some urine, the odor would just er..cling to the moss and what little urine output I do have tends to be very strong smelling now from all the meds so simply wiping with dry TP wouldn't get rid of it. OBG found nothing wrong. I tried some moist wipes for a while, but the fragrance ingredient was causing irritation. I don't know if anyone else has had this issue but the solution for me was to just mow the grass and sometimes do a quick pat with witch hazel. LoL, I hope that wasn't too graphic. My first neph was squeamish about my lady-issues, especially at the detail with which I would present them because dammit I wanted them fixed.

My drive gradually began to decline though, to the point where I didn't even think about sex anymore unless I'm feeling remiss about not having it. I think it was part physical and part depression. My current partner who I have been with for quite a while is a trooper. She's very patient and generally doesn't pressure me. But I feel guilty often because I know that she has a normal libido and misses being intimate. My catheter doesn't bother her either though and I know when I'm ready again body issues will be minimal.

Guess I wanted to share my personal experiences in hope that it could help someone afraid to ask. Because I sure as heck am not afraid to tell it (with my red face hidden behind a screen that is) And this coming from the realist often mistaken for a pessimist: There are still compassionate individuals out there and people do have a way of finding each other even if it takes some time. Hell, I bet somewhere out there is a person with a total fetish for fistulas or stomach tails. "Just let me give it one push..just one little squish, please?" Ha. I would pee myself with envy for the person who caught that one. Sex doesn't have to be totally off the table (i used to find it more comfortable ON the table actually...har har, i know, throw tomatoes) It just needs a little biit more strategy at times. Now for the folks here discussing tales of sex WHILE in the MIDDLE of their hemo treatment AT the clinic...that is some hardcore kink right there. If you can manage that...well, goes to show there IS something for everyone. I've taken my ambien for the evening so I am getting out of here before I start going off on some really bizarre stuff.

Cheers!!

Thank you for being so honest and forthright. Very interesting post.  Without getting too graphic , my wife and I are in our 60s and been together 33 years. Even with her hemodialysis and my cancer damage we have more and better sex now then ever.,   .  I believe it is really a mindset. We have had to over come a lot with both of us damaged in some ways. We just became creative and that kind of thinking and talking about it only made it BETTER.
Without getting too intimate here, I will add that odors like you mentioned are often a womans fear. Yet many men (or in your case men and women) partners really enjoy the natural scents down there on a  woman. As long as it is not from an infe4tion , the odors were out there in a way to attract partners. Nature used the scents to attract mates . I think we as a society and to sell deodorants have made the natural female scents some kind of "bad" thing.  Its too bad as it actually can be a turn on to many partners. Try to relax about it. I love everything about my wife and that's as far as I will go there , but you get the idea.
The most important aphrodisiac is really TALK and Communication. Talking about sex to your partner opens up a whole aspect of the relationship , improves sex, and can be a real turn on. Being open about your fears, what turns you on, what you enjoy, even going out on a limb and admitting any 'weird' stuff you like can be very freeing. It may turn out you open up a whole new world. But without talk you never get there.
 All I CAN ADD IS MY WIFE AND I laugh at the usual line that married sex or monogamy after 33 years gets boring . We seemed to have missed that. It only gets better if you WORK AT IT. Of course that is true of anything in a relationship.
Keep posting all you want about this topic. I bet there are a lot of people out there quite interested in this /.

Natural female scents...I have zero issue with. :angel; What I was describing was something that I feel is actually unnatural as it is caused by the by-product of medications leaving the body. It doesn't originate from the vag, but the urethra. As I said though, an easy fix. That's awesome that you and your wife have been together for so long and still maintain a great sex life through all your struggles. I can say I greatly envy those who find a partner and get married while on dialysis..and even more so those who were already married prior to being sick. I think that out of ANY of the advantages someone could have during this trial, the best one is a partner you can share anything with and know they aren't going to go running and screaming for the hills.

What a great post KidneyThief :bow;
Made me laugh also :) but you got great guts being open on the subject. Thanks!

I'm having a partner for 6,5 years and sex is somehow not so nice for me since the coming of the stomachtube. I find it disturbing that it could be swinging around on the rythm of our bodies. So we just fumble around underneath the blankets and don't have wild sex, but just gentle and soft and nice and I like that a lot so... i don't have the guts (yet?) to show myself naked though I used to be very happy running around naked before al this. My relationship is great and I know for a fact that he doesn't get bothered by the catheter as much as I am, but everything takes time and I need time to like myself again. Losing weight is helping though :cheer:

For years now my libido is declining, but during vacations or holidays we would have more sex because there is more time to do it naturally (instead of quick quick in between work and sleep). During our last Summer holiday my boyfriend was eager all the time and I was only tired and had zero feelings that way. He was disappointed and questioned my love at the end of Summer: why wouldn't I answer his affection? I didn't knew either.. When I got diagnosed in September it al fell together and for him it was quite a relief too that is was because of the kidneyfailure! Now we have good talks about it and I think we get through this.

..but I also look very much forward to kidneytransplantation  :bandance;

Do you ever feel you've loss sex appeal (assuming you had it in the first place) because of being on dialysis? How do you deal with body image issues such as fistulas, dry skin, distended stomachs (if you dialyse over night) when trying to appeal to the opposite sex?

Try to appeal by your friendly manner and sense of humour, but sex while on dialysis
is not recommended.   :rofl;

 :bump; This is pretty personal but since dialysis I don't think about sex too much! (darn) I used to think about it a lot! Someone here best explained *why* in an earlier post. Does this mean we have lost our sex drive?  :o Mine has always been high, especially with a partner. Right now I am single and the thought of sex, well, should I be having sex right now? (dialysis-wise) It is baffling to me where my drive went but it must be the fluid they put in us. Or maybe the kidney makes us feel too ill? What else can explain the sex drive taking a nose dive? I hope it corrects itself  :guitar:

I don't think there is one single reason why sex drive decreases while on dialysis. There are the physical reasons such as generally feeling ill or tired, toxins in the blood, blood pressure concerns/blood pressure medication contributing to lack of interest and then the exhausting nature of dialysis. Then, there are the mental reasons, such as change in appearance. Some dialysis patients simply are middle aged or older and naturally experience a natural decrease in hormonal drive. The brain is key sex organ so sometimes if you have other more serious issues on your plate, sex gets pushed aside.

It's different for everyone. I had a regular and active sex life during the majority of time on dialysis. It didn't change anything to be honest. I had some concerns over appearance (ugly looking fistula arms or a catheter that had to be pushed aside from my breast). Some female patients complained about uncomfortable dryness due to fluid restrictions etc (yes, there is always lube) but I literally had none of that side effect.

The only time my husband and I had a sex drought was a short time prior to transplant. I wasn't getting good clearances so I didn't feel good. No interest in sex whatsoever. That obviously taught me that when things are going stable with the best possible levels and a clear mind, sex is a natural thing, even while on dialysis. After transplant, we had the mandatory 6-8 weeks of no sex due to the surgical incision. We had some issues during that time but that's another story for another time.

It's obviously not the same as sex while on dialysis but definitely, after transplant, it's better. I thought we had a good sex life before ( maybe 5 times a week on dialysis) to an increase from that now. Maybe it wasn't as good on dialysis as I thought... it's all relative, so who is to say?

I am happy to say my body seems to becoming more responsive. I was worried. It's been a couple of months that this dialysis-life began. I guess I can't expect 100% right away. It's a slow process.  :flower;

A couple of thoughts.

I am always so tired I need a Nap BEFORE Thinking about Sex.

Used to be I'd see some Sweetheart jogging along the sidewalk and I would think 'Nice' B____!       Now I wonder how she can make it look so easy to move her legs.

I'm still too stubborn to get that walker out of the back of my truck.
