Title: Flat Stanley anyone?
Post by: MIbarra on December 11, 2008, 07:44:55 PM
My class just finished reading "Flat Stanley" by Jeff Brown. Stanley is a cool little guy that gets squished flat when his bulletin board lands on top of him one night. Stanley has many flat adventures including posing as a kite one day for his little brother and being shipped to California to a friend's house when his family doesn't have enough money to send him via train or plane.

Now my class is in the process of making their own Flat Stanleys (or Flat Stanleyettas) and we are mailing them out to family or friends - as far as we can get them to go. Unfortunately many of my kiddo's parents have not returned a mailing address to mail their Stanleys to. Many of the kids do not have family out of state or even out of the town they live in.

Sooooo, what I am wondering is.. Would anyone be interested in taking in a Flat Stanley? Usually what participants do is take pictures with Stanley in their hometown and write a letter back to the kids about what Flat Stanley did on his "vacation." Sometimes they include little items like brochures from the tourist or convention center of their town. The kids (and their teacher especially of course) would really appreciate anyone's involvement that is interested in our little project. I have about 11 students who do not have an address as of today.

If you are interested, please PM me or write a reply here on this post.

Moderators, if you feel this is inappropriate or need to move this, I understand.

Do you want a letter back from Flat Stanley or an adventure story, or a box of stuff from CA for your kids to look at?

Last year we had them done a few ways.. One grandma wrote about Stanley's adventure in the mail slot and on the truck, and then sitting in the mailbox waiting for her, etc. It was great! Other's write letters about what Flat Stanley did. Some send pictures, others send information about their hometown. We even got some with souvenires from their city's sports teams. A couple visited classrooms. One Flat Stanley even went snowmobiling and ran into a Flat Stanley from another state! I've really enjoyed Flat Stanley and his adventures and the kids have to.

Oh I remember my son's Flat Stanley - he really got around! The photos he got back, and the travel log were so much fun to read. I am happy to help.
I will PM my address. What grade are the kids?

Thank you!

I have second graders - who are very bouncy this time of year. Making their Flat Stanley's tomorrow will keep their teacher from pulling her hair out.

3 Flat Stanley's down!

Thanks so much!

The kids finished making their Flat Stanleys or Flat Stanleyettas today. We are going to write our letters next week and take pictures with our Flat Stanleys before we mail them off. Then we'll pack them all up and send them off on December 19th. They are all so excited.

I recieved Flat Stanley today!  Although, it must have been a long, warm trip, since when I opened the envelope he had taken off 2/3 of his buttons and both his eyes!  I've heard of being tired, but taking your eyes off to sleep is a new one on me!  :rofl;

Stanleyetta arrived the other day, everything was intact!  We were hoping to get a picture of her in the snow, but the rain melted it away!  My son is very excited to bring her around.  I'm thinking she'll become a New England Patriots and a Boston Red Sox fan in no time!

:2thumbsup;  Great pics of Flat Stanley Boxman. Angel will love the snow.

Sluff, with all the rush of Christmas and travelling, I have about 4 Flat Stanley's that have not made it out because I have to buy manila envelopes. So sorry. He will be soon on his way though.

KellyT, I think I had enough addresses to take Flat Stanley. But there is another teacher at school doing the project and she may need someone to take in a homeless Flat Stanley. When we get back to school, I'll ask. I'm sorry if I didn't respond to  your PM. Things are crazy here!

If anyone has any questions, please let me know.

mine must be one that needs a travel "crate" (manila envelope) because he hasn't arrived as well.

mibara even though it would mean a late arrival back to you i would be glad to send my stanley to kellyt after he visits my sister's classroom in oregon. he would be on his way to becoming a world traveler. what do you think?

:(  I fear our district workers may have taken vacation before they got all of the Flat Stanley's mailed.

I'm sorry guys! I put them in our district mailbox on the 18th and 19th. The administration building was supposed to be open which means the district post office should have been to. They should then be out next week.

Okay.. All Flat Stanleys have left the district "post office" unless I PMed you. If you don't receive yours by Friday of next week, please let me know.

Here is the list of people that I have with Flat Stanley's arriving or have arrived:
Sluff - had to change your little person, but it should be arriving
G-Ma
Paul.Karen
Okarol
Kitkatz
Jess 21
Mikey
Grammalady
Boxman
Skyedogrocks
Rose (who when finished will send it to Lola - if you don't mind Rose)
Del (who will send to Romona - if of course you don't mind) This is the one I have yet to ship out because I ran out of Flat Stanley cut outs before I put them in the district mail. They will receive a "class" Flat Stanley.
Twirl, I have a new kiddo and I want him to get in on the experience so as soon as he makes a Flat Stanley, I want to send his to you.

So, if you have any questions, let me know. We received one Flat Stanley back this week and she visited Maryland. The kids loved hearing about her trip.

i think what carlyn is planning on doing is have her class send oregon postcards to people first, requesting a post card for their map. but i'll check with her and let everyone know. i know she would LOVE a card from austraila. thank you ever so much.  i think i'm having as much if not more fun with this than the kids.

Stanley will be leaving the UK tomorrow (Monday) and winging his way to Lola.  Because of Dad being so ill I haven't been able to do quite as much with Stanley as I'd hoped but I think the children will enjoy seeing what he has been up to - well I hope they will!

Despite everything that's been going on I've enjoyed having Stanley to stay, I'll miss the little guy  ;)

Flat Stanleyetta misses Thuy so I am sending her back on Monday is a Priority box, since what she collected at the bookstore will not fit in the envelope anymore!   We bought Thuy her own set of Flat Stanley books.  Don't tell her! Stanleyetta wants it to be surprise!

Thursday, Sarah, Stanleyetta and I went to lunch and shopping...bookstore first...yahoooo did we have fun, yes it will be a box also for S Etta, because she came so late and missed the first trip to the Mts, I'm keeping her a bit longer so she can have pictures in the mountains.  We sent a note to Erin today.  I think we are all enjoying this more or as much as the children.    :cheer:

G-ma, take your time! I'm glad you are having fun with Stanleyetta!

I went overboard!   Again! I just can't help it!    Thuy is getting a box coming to her at your classroom addy. It will be mailed Monday afternoon, I hope. There is a set of Flat Stanley books, a little fairy child knickknack in a hello kitty bag. Plus around 14 or 15 California postcards and a California pin.   Flat Stanleyetta was put on top. I hang head in shame, but I loved getting every bit of it with the Stanleyetta.  Did you know this Stanleyetta likes to read and loves bookstores!

I can send you the pics I have if you will give me your real email addy. My printer is acting strange and will only print when it wants to.  What a pain! Tell Thuy, Stanleyetta will be coming priority mail next week!

A few Stanleyetta photos.
She hung out in the Christmas tree for awhile.

She got burgers, fries and shakes at in-n-out burger.
Stanleyetta had fun going to the Renal Teen Prom too!

flat stanley has spent a week in my sister's classroom, hiding in a bag behind her desk (carlyn has been sick) but he came out and said hi yesterday. the entire class is sending letters, telling how stanley was with them for the inauguration and a teddy bear parade. the class has decided they all want flat stanleys of their own they need some addresses (if anyone is interested you can pm me) the are going to request post cards so they can mark a big map in the hall of all the places their cards have come from. my stanley will be returning to texas next week, after i get home.

Ok,.. we've received several Flat Stanleys. We are busy opening them, sharing them, making copies for our book, and writing thank you letters to send back. I wish I could post pics here of the kids with their letters and Flat Stanleys, but.. it would be against policy. I was also hoping to put up pics on our website and send you the link. However, 2 weeks ago they changed web maker services or whatever and now all it says is "we are under construction" and we are not allowed to put anything on our website yet because they want conformity! Goodness!

So, just know that we are ALL enjoying opening the Flat Stanley letters and gifts and exciting things.

I'm also working on sending some of them back out to enjoy another visit.

My bulletin board right now says, "Where in the World is Flat Stanley?" and we are marking each Flat Stanley that comes in.

Kitkatz,

Yes, Thuy got her package! She loved it!! We enjoyed looking at all the post cards and I told her I also had pictures to print out.

We have about 8 more to open so far. We keep getting boxes and boxes. The secretary brings me a big box at least twice a week! She's amazed at what is coming in! I think I'm going to try and "rent" a bulletin board in the school and put some letters and pictures up so everyone knows what we are doing. We are outside in "trailers" so the "insiders" don't see a lot of what 2nd grade is doing. But I'd really like them to see the wonderful responses we are getting.

I don't know what it is about them but I love those old buses.  A relative of mine had one of them when she was a child and her Mom gathered the kids up and was leaving her husband at the time, (long dramatic story) anywho they were trying to get out of town and some how she hit some ravel and rolled the VW over totalling it out. Just a few minor injuries. I felt sorry they tottalled the VW.. :rofl;

Flat Stanley arrived in the British Virgin Islands!!  But his trip took very long!  It was posted since early Feb, and only just got here.  He arrived just as we were moving to our new apartment.  We took a picture of him with the view of the first apartment, and will soon be taking some of him in the new apartment.
I will bring him to work at the Cruise Ship Pier with me very soon and will take
some picts.
He will have to stay with us a bit longer than 7 days, but he will be soon on his way.

Here are some picts of Flat Stanley in the British Virgin Islands.  He admired the view from my first apartment, then got to know the other view.
Disney Cruise had an inaugural visit, so I took his picture at our cruiseship dock.  There were stilt dancers and he got to dance with them.
He went to my grandson's primary school and got pictures taken there.  some of the kids wrote a letter to Katy who had sent the Flat Stanley.

Do recall a few years back, some activity with  Flat Stanley. Did take it to the center and got a few pictures.
Events got out of hand, and never was able to follow through with it.   :Kit n Stik;

Is this still an active project with the schoolers ?

If anyone is interested, and on facebook, there is a Flat Stanley type program on the go for dialysis patients.. there's a group on facebook called The Misadventures of Flip the Dialysis Bird... it's the same idea, we kind of just pass him around from dialysis patient to dialysis patient.. take him on little adventures, take pictures, and post back to the group... he comes with his own passport, and everyone who has him fills out a page with a recap of his time, your name, and town where you live (I put Riki and Joan *mylastname* on mine when I sent it off).. it's actually kind of a neat idea...

This is a picture of me, Flip, and the Prime Minister, though you can only see the top of poor Flip's head in the shot.. Mr. Trudeau was actually holding Flip...
