Hi everyone. My name is Sophie B.
I am a 44 year old female and have been on dialysis since 2003. The first two years of treatment, I was on PD, but after multiple infections and limited success, I switched to hemo. Like many others, I hate dialysis – the way it makes you feel, the time it takes to complete a treatment, and the emotional and financial stress on the family, among other things. On the flip side, thank goodness for dialysis, for it is what keeps me going.
A bit about myself… I am happily married with no kids. I live in the SE corner of Washington State, USA , right on the Idaho border. I am a computer geek by trade, and a part-time classic rock disc jockey from 2000-2005. I owned a computer biz for several years but closed it down when I began dialysis at the clinic. I have been an insulin-dependent diabetic since the age of 11. Diabetes is what caused my kidneys to fail. I’ve had diabetic retinopathy in both eyes since 1984, which has left me blind in the right eye, and with no peripheral or night vision in the left.
I am so glad to have found this website. I was beginning to think that I was losing my grip on ‘dealing” with dialysis until I read many of the threads and posts on this website. Now I feel like I have found a pot of gold: People just like me who understand about being on dialysis I am a firm believer in communication and I hope to learn and grow from reading and participating on this site. I am looking forward to communicating and sharing experiences and thoughts with the others on dialysis and their families. I intend to make this website known to both the patients and staff at my dialysis clinic. I’m not sure how it will go over with the staff and admins but I’m sure the patients will love it.

Hi Sophie, :welcomesign;
This is a standout place & the family atmosphere is what makes it. Most other boards are technical with good info, but IHD is real people going through what you are going through & sharing experiences.
Most of all you find very quickly you are not & never will be alone. Feelings are out in the open, never judged, but shared. You have truly found love & a home at IHD.
