Title: Swish and Swallow???
Post by: donnia on August 23, 2008, 07:27:49 PM
Are any of you that have had a transplant on the swish and swallow?  I have not been, but my neph just gave me a prescription for 10 days because of the sore I have on my tongue.  He also gave me the lidocane thick gooey stuff that makes me wanna hurl    :puke;   ... but it does take the pain away.

Stephen did the swish and swirl at the beginning - a few weeks, I think.

I never had that one before.
I had the swish and swallow at the begining of my transplant. Not great tasting, but easier than the pills you suck on till it disolves.

Jenna had 10mg Mycelex, 4x per day, an anti-fungal lozenge for the first 3 months after her transplant to avoid any thrush or sores.

Oh yeah- my hubby has Nystatin liquid. It's cherry vanilla flavored. He does take it 4 times per day.  One thing we learned- don't drink alot of Orange Juice or fruit juices while using that. It works against each other and does cause some mouth discomfort. My hubby noticed his throat and mouth were irritated. So he quit the juice and it made his symptoms go away.

Chris... be thankful you didn't get the Lidocane stuff.... eeewwww! It seriously makes me want to toss my cookies!  Nas - tay!

Thanks Gram2twinz!  I dont think I have had any fruit juices.... hummm... except for today, I had grapecranberry.  I will stay away from them.  I wonder if acidic vegetables do the same thing.... I do eat alot of tomato.

Yep, did the swish and swallow with Nystatin in the beginning of both of my transplants.  Tasted terrible, but it's better than getting thrush.  Lidocaine will definitely give you the "technicolor yawn'.  Hopefully you will be off both of these meds soon.  Best of luck!

donnia, Len was on Nystatin for the first 6 months. He got to the point he could barely swallow it. He was glad when it was gone. You might try cutting back on the tomatoes until your sore is gone. Hope that doesn't take too long.  :cuddle;

I just replaced my Nystatin with a shot of whiskey. Still tasted bad, but I liked the buzz!

I am just kidding.

LOL Ramona!

I started the swish and swallow stuff yesterday and it seems that my sore isnt as tender.  I have only used the Lidocane nasty stuff twice since it was prescribed 'as needed'.  The swish ans swallow stuff I will only have to take for 10 days... good thing cuz it is gross too!!!  If it helps though, I won't complain too much!

I can't remember the name of what I was on post transplant, but it was an anti-fungal and it was a nasty yellow liquid and I could swallow or spit, and I SPIT!  Then I had to swish and spit with water to keep from getting a yeast infection in my mouth (Thrush).  I'm glad that was only for two weeks post transplant.   NASTY!

I was on the clotrimazole lozenges. They weren't too bad, I guess.
