:flower; hello to all of you here at IHD~~ my mom and i started training friday for CAPD for my dad who will be 75 next month. he has
been a brittle type I diabetic since 1954~~54 years, and most of those days in that 54 years he took 3 or 4 shots.
he had a heart attack and 6 bypasses in 2001
in dec of 2006, my husband committed suicide and i came home for a while~~dad was not feeling well then and has continued his decline
in early july, he went into a diabetic coma that mom couldn't get him out of and the ambulance was called
there was a weekend doctor at the local, small hospital and ran a complete blood workup and he told
us that dad was in End Stage Renal Failure, he scheduled us an appt with a nephrologist for August 11
On July 8, we returned dad to hospital because he couldn't get a deep breathe and was having chest pains
he was admitted to Arkansas Heart Hospital for Congestive Heart Failure
On July 10, he went into a 6 hour diabetic coma and had a stroke while his blood sugar was below 50 almost the whole time, regardless of what
actions was taken. It affected his right side
dad would no longer be able to manage his diabetes due to right arm and mental confusion
mom learned how to give my dad shots after 52 years of marriage and a wonderful diabetic doctor at Arkansas Heart Hospital found a formula of insulin for dad where he is given 2 types of insulin, a total of 4 shots a day
he was admitted to the hospital on August 5 for total kidney failure and received his first of 3 dialysis treatments in the hospital
this brought dad's weight down to below 130
mom and i started our training on August 15 and return to north little rock on August 18 for further training
i am so proud of my mom, she will be 70 in a couple of months and has bravely taken over dad's care
while fighting bladder cancer herself
She beat stage 3 breast cancer in 1996
i am so happy that i found this sight
i will most likely do the most posting,
but mom will also
:bandance; we are glad to know this place exists
and i have learned so much from reading the post
that i was able to pass my tests 100% before training
even starts
We are the Fread's~~like bread or fred flintstone
Charles is the patient
mom is main caregiver
with me doing backup,
research and helping her with dad
dad is in a motorized wheelchair and can take a few steps~~remember those toys "...weebles wobbly but they don't fall down..." that's kind of like
dad except he does fall down sometimes
dinner is just about ready so i will close this post
see you soon

Welcome to our community! This is just the place for you to be! You have certainly, as a family, had more than your share of challenges. But I am always amazed at the strength of the human spirit under pressure. Sometimes it even brings out the best in us. Well, you just got yourself another family - the IHD family :grouphug; You are guaranteed information, support, fun with a wonderful group of caring, sharing (and daring, as Twirl says) people, who are with you for the long haul. this website has been a real weapon for many of us in dealing with this renal challenge, as well as many others that we face. So take advantage of all that this site has to offer. Read and read and post and post. Looking forward to hearing much more from you :flower;

There are many 'ifs' and they vary widely for each patient due to their circumstances and the way they maintain their situation. Try not to get frustrated when there's not a definite answer available in any form and just flow with them. It's knowing where those 'if's are that's the important part.

Welcome Charlene and your family to ihatedialysis.com,
Your family has been through a lot of rough times, but the real lesson here is your family faces these challenges together and that is an honorable trait. You have learned from your Mom and maybe someday you will be rewarding her by being there for her when and if it would ever be necessary. Sorry to hear about your husband, I'm sure that had to be rough on you. We are here for your family any time day or night, so ask all the questions you need and I'm sure you will get the answers you need.
