Title: My scooter crapped out, but there's a happy ending
Post by: Adam_W on August 09, 2008, 12:37:41 PM
The last few months I've been having problem after problem with my little motor scooter that I was so excited to get. The engine won't run smoothly, it has a fuel leak in the carburetor, and recently part of the frame that supports the seat broke at a weld. So, it's pretty much ready for the junk pile now, after having it less than a year! I had mentioned my problems to some of my friends at church, and some of them were there when my throttle stuck wide open when I was trying to start the thing in the church parking lot. I almost had a runaway scooter heading straight for the glass doors of the church! I managed to grab the handlebars and kind of flipped it over to stop it from moving, then I was able to kill the engine and unstick the throttle. If it had gotten away from me, I would have been putting A LOT of money in the offering plate  :lol; Anyhoo, word spread, and my pastor and his son picked me up, and WE WENT SCOOTER SHOPPING! The church had come together and raised enough money to get me a brand new scooter. It just blew my mind, especially when my pastor handed a check for $1000 dollars to the dealer. It just goes to show that there are still a lot of very kind, loving and caring people in this world. My new ride is currently sitting at the front of the sanctuary at church, and the "formal presentation" will be done tomorrow at service. I rode it a little bit today, and it rides like a Cadillac compared to my old turd-mobile. Here is a picture of the model that I have, even though mine is gloss black and silver. I'll try to get some pics of my actual scooter later.

Your story made my day Adam.  You deserve this scooter and the fine people at your church deserve credit for doing a really good deed.  Ride safely and be well.

What a nice group you've got at church! Prayer is great but making the extra effort to help someone out is a big deal. Bless them!

Great that people helped you out in your situation.
Guess it would have been bad to ask for a kidney also :rofl;
Sorry my bad, morbid humor.

Here are the pics of my actual scooter. I rode it a little more today, and at one point I actually hit 50mph. It was so smooth, it felt like I was standing still (except for the wind hitting me and whistling through my helmet). It's also nice to have enough speed and acceleration to keep up with cars, and be able to change lanes when I need to. I love it!

I love it and know you look cool and hot riding it >:D &  8)

my son had a basketball coach in high school, he came to see Bubba baptized twice-- the first time he came was the wrong date-- He came my aunt's funeral, she was like a grandmother to my children------ a very nice man
he has been down on his luck and called us today as we were returning from college station
he needed my husband to meet him at Walmart to fill his gas tank
he did not have the money or gas to get to work tomorrow
we were glad to help even though money is tight
Bubba's rent is killing us..
but, we needed to help him so we did
that is what makes this a good place to be

Do they call them mopeds still thses day's?
Nice bike, atleast if the frame cracks on this one, at least there is a warranty (I hope)
Can it really reach 80 mph? Never been on one and just can't imagine it going that fast.

They are sometimes still called mopeds, even though most do not have pedals. As for the speed, the primary measurement is in km/h, it has the mph in smaller numbers under the primary gauge. The mph only goes a little over 50mph.

Here are a couple pics of me riding it, and one with me and my mom sitting on it (using the heavy duty double legged kickstand). It is capable of carrying two people, but because of the small size, it's not really a good idea.

It's rare that we get to experience a story that restores a little faith in humanity, so thank you for sharing.

As a scooter rider (Aprilia Scarabeo 100) I'm curious about the brand and model.  I can get mine up to 60mph and so far I've been getting 85mpg.  The more my truck can sit, the more money I know I'm saving.

It's also strange riding two wheels.  When it's parked, people are always coming up, asking questions and telling me about their bike.

When I'm in traffic, people speed around me, hurl angry cursing and generally can't stand me on the road.

Yeah, I don't get it either.

Yeah, I don't get it either.

I can somewhat relate to having people asking me all kinds of questions about the scooter. The first time I rode my new one to the dialysis centre to pick up some supplies, at the first mention of having a new scooter, my nurses were all flying out the door to see it. I haven't really gotten any bad "run-ins" with other drivers, just an occasional driver cutting me off so they could be the first one to stop at the red light.

As for the brand, mine is a Tank Urban 50. This bike is sold as a "clone" under a few different names (it's identical to the popular Roketa Maui. For the most part, I can't get enough of it. The gas mileage is not that great because the engine is not fully "broken in". It's getting maybe 40 or 50 mpg. The acceleration is also really slow, however I end up trading high acceleration for good top-end speed. The other day I pegged 50mph which is as high as my speedometer will go, and I was still gaining speed. I know I hit at least 60, maybe higher (have to start making sure I don't go too fast and get a speeding ticket). I'm already approaching the 300km service period where the oil will be changed for the first time, and the shop will give the whole thing a nice inspection. (eventually I'll be working on it myself, but for now I'll let the shop do the first few services). Related to this, I was at the Indiana state fair today, and there was a booth for electric scooters made by X-treme Scooters, the company that made my old turd of a scooter. I was telling the representative about the problems I was having with my "X-treme XG-499" He agreed with me that the problem appears to be with the carburetor. To my surprise, he whips out his cell phone, calls the tech service, and orders me a whole new carb completely free of charge! It wasn't even under warranty. He said I should have the new carb by the end of this week. I'm planning on getting my old scooter back in operation, and just use it as a "stand up" scooter until I can find someone who can re-weld the crack in the seat post mount. The turd can be my backup, or "travel scooter". I'll continue with the updates on how things are going in "scooter land".
