Title: Wow! I'm a Junior AGAIN!
Post by: Mom3 on July 26, 2006, 06:16:58 PM
I think being a JUNIOR member is really neat...Didn't realize I had posted that often already!! :o

I was named after my mother and for my first couple of years wrote my name with JR on the end, to the chagrin of my teachers who reprimanded me that a girl can't be a junior...and here I am, a junior still again.

How does that work? Can only boys be juniors?

According to my 50's elementary school teachers!

But one of these teachers also told me there was no such thing as a sea horse and sent me to the cloak room (yes we actually had CLOAK ROOMS!!) because I argued with her about it. (I had seen a live one!)

Perhaps we need a memory thread, or is that just the senior citizen in me?

Let's do this!   I went to a school which had a cloakroom.  The irony about this is that this is a school in the tropics!!  Where were the cloaks??  But it was a very British school.  My principal was British, many of the teachers were British.  My school was named Queen's College (it was a high school).  But then anyone who knows anything about my country would know that Barbados is known as little England.

My teacher used to make me stand in the back in the "cloakroom (http://www.bbc.co.uk/lincolnshire/voices/images/earl_of_dysart_tour/cloakroom_320.jpg)" but it was NOT a room .. more like a cloakWALL but it was for coats because I live in Canada.

I used to go to school in the winter wearing leggings under my mandatory dress or skirt. The leggings usually matched the coats we wore -  we didn´t wear jackets. We took them off in the cloak room and hung them up next to our coats, "idiot mittens" and above our boots that fit over our shoes.  Anybody remember those things?  What about buying milk for 2 cents in the cafeteria and a hot lunch for 50 cents?  Guess I´m a senior citizen, too!

Our cloak room was a real room with two doors in the back of the turn of the century classroom. (Built turn of the century!) This was late 50's. I was a bad kid and I spent so much time in there I used to bring snacks in my pockets, assuming I'd be sent to the cloakroom and would get a chance to eat them! >:D

It was really a beautiful old school building. Fortunately it wasn't torn down, and is now used as a community center. It had this wonderful real wood smell...I think it may have been cedar.

There was a lot wrong in those days but some things were good. Especially the cafeteria food. Those ladies really cooked!
