Good one Boxman. twirl will be throwing chum at her television in hope to get the sharks closer. :rofl;
-
JAWS and JAWS2 have been on all week on TNT or TBS or AMC, some upper channel around here. Cool shark week is coming.
My favorite line was "we are going to need a bigger boat!"
-
shark week is real not fake Hollywood crap
about the shark attacks on men in the water in WWII
and along the Jersey Coast
I do not watch the fake movies
well, a funny thing
I went late to dialysis friday
I was flipping the stations
and I went--OHHHH!!
it starlted me
the shark jumps at the boat
and the captain says
that part about needing a bigger boat
I made a couple of techs jump
-
What does "chumming" mean? ??? To me a 'chum' is a friend.
-
Chumming is when bits and pieces of meat and blood are thrown into the ocean to attract the sharks to come closer to the boat.
-
I have a chum bucket. :rofl;
-
Exactly who wants sharks to come near their boat? Are you shark fishers?
-
shark lovers as long as someone else is dinner
-
sharks are getting people off a Florida coast
just tasting; not eating
-
We have decided to tell people Victor had a shark bite, not an accident at work! :rofl;
-
We have decided to tell people Victor had a shark bite, not an accident at work! :rofl;
Yeah, here's Victor surfing right before "the accident."

Australian surfer says he was towed by shark
By ROD McGUIRK, Associated Press Writer Mon Sep 8, 8:40 PM ET
CANBERRA, Australia - A large shark entangled itself in a surfer's leg rope in Australia and began towing him and his board out to sea, the surfer said Tuesday.
John Morgan, a 51-year-old surf shop owner from the east coast tourist town of Byron Bay, compared his terrifying 170-foot ride off a local beach to being towed by a jet ski.
He said he was about 330 yards from shore and paddling out when the 10-foot shark swelled up from underneath him Sunday afternoon.
"It freaked me out," Morgan said. "It bumped my leg rope and next thing it tangled itself in the leg rope and started charging out to sea with me in tow."
"To say it was like being towed by a jet ski might be an exaggeration, but it was really fast," he added.
Morgan said he clung to the board until the shark suddenly freed itself and disappeared. The rope was not damaged and remained attached to the board and his ankle.
Morgan said he was not sure what kind of shark it was.
"He was probably as freaked out as I was," Morgan said.

Sharks are frightening. I won't ever wish one on you.
Last summer my two kids, husband, and I were snorkeling off Key Largo in Florida and I had a huge brown "nurse" shark swim right under me. It was way bigger than I and could have had me if he wanted because it came from behind. I was teriffied. I tried to show him to my husband but he just swam off and never came back. I still finished my snorkeling, though. I thought if he really wanted a piece of me, he would have done it.

An upside to the recession! While I wouldn't classify this as cutting edge science, I thought Twirl would enjoy this one.
There's a video clip at the website: http://www.livescience.com/strangenews/090219-recession-sharks.html
(not sure why they posted a whale shark rather than a real man-eater!!!!!)
Economic Recession Means Fewer Shark Attacks
By LiveScience Staff
posted: 19 February 2009 04:36 pm ET
Shark attacks are on the decline due to the current economic downturn, a biologist speculated today.
In 2008, attacks worldwide dipped to their lowest level in five years, a sign that Americans may be forgoing vacation trips to the beach, said ichthyologist George Burgess of the University of Florida.
Burgess is the director of the International Shark Attack File, a compilation of all known shark attacks that is administered by the American Elasmobranch Society and the Florida Museum of Natural History, on the UF campus.
The total number of shark attacks declined from 71 in 2007 to 59 in 2008, the fewest since 2003, when there were 57, said Burgess, who works at the museum.
"I can’t help but think that contributing to that reduction may have been the reticence of some people to take holidays and go to the beach for economic reasons," Burgess said. "We noticed similar declines during the recession that followed the events of 2001, despite the fact that human populations continued to rise."
Shark attacks basically correlate with the number of people in the water. The more people go to the beach, the more they are in the shark's home, the offshore waters, and the more attacks on humans.
In recent years, vacationing tourists have been attacked off beaches in remote parts of the globe, such as Cocos Island in the Indian Ocean, where none were reported in the past, he said.
There were four fatal attacks last year — an average number — compared with only one in 2007, which marked a two-decade low. Two of the deaths were in Mexico, one was in Australia and one was in the United States.
The number of shark attacks in the United States, which typically makes up about two-thirds of the total worldwide, dropped from 50 in 2007 to 41 in 2008, Burgess said. Thirty-two of those attacks were in Florida — the same number as the previous year — followed by North Carolina and South Carolina, with three each; Hawaii had two; and California, one.
Florida, with its warm waters, has more sharks, including black tip sharks and spinner sharks, species not found in lower temperatures, Burgess said.
"A lot less attacks occur off Long Island, New York, than Florida simply because there are fewer sharks up there," he said.
Within Florida, Volusia County continued its dubious distinction as the world’s shark bite capital with 22 incidents, its highest yearly total since 2001, Burgess said.
As in past years, surfers accounted for most of the world’s attacks — 57 percent — followed by swimmers and waders, 36 percent; and divers, 8 percent, he said. These numbers are rounded up, which is why they total more than 100 percent.
"Surfers are the heavy favorites largely because the splashing of arms and particularly the kicking of feet at the water's surface where visibility is poor is provocative to sharks," Burgess said. "They result in what we think are cases of mistaken identity, where the shark interprets the irregular splashing to be activities of its normal prey."
Swimmers and waders are the group most likely to be affected by economic hardship, Burgess said. "These are sort of the average folks that go to the water for recreation, lie on the beach, work on their suntan and take their kids in the surf for a swim," he said. "I would expect their numbers to decline in 2009."
Over the long term, though, Burgess expects shark attacks to rise because of a gradual upswing from one decade to the next. "We’ve already surpassed the numbers of attacks in the previous 10-year period," he said, "so we know this decade will be higher than the last."

Man on 2nd saltwater fishing trip bags huge shark
Mon Mar 2, 9:09 pm ET
ORANGE BEACH, Ala. – A Texas man on just his second saltwater fishing trip caught an 11-foot, 8-inch shortfin mako shark that weighed 1,149.5 pounds on scales at Port Fourchon, La. Bill Walters, a 56-year-old dog trainer from Granbury, Texas, caught the shark last week aboard the Orange Beach, Ala.-based Sea Spray while trolling near the mouth of the Mississippi River.
It took more than six hours to haul in the catch with the help of nine friends and skipper Bill Staff.
It is one of the heaviest shortfin mako sharks ever caught. The International Game Fish Association shortfin mako world record is 1,221 pounds.

Sydney shark attack: Andrew Lindop recovering well after surgery
Article from: AAP
March 02, 2009 05:43pm
* Andrew Lindop, 15, mauled by shark
* Recovering well after four hours of surgery
* Renewed warnings on dusk, dawn surfing
A TEENAGE surfer attacked by a shark off northern Sydney's Avalon Beach is in good spirits and joking from his hospital bed, his family says.
Andrew Lindop, 15, needed four hours of surgery on his left thigh after a shark, believed to be a great white 2m long, attacked him during an early morning surf with his father yesterday.
Surgeons at Royal North Shore Hospital are confident they have saved the boy's leg, but in the wake of the third Sydney shark attack in as many weeks, the New South Wales Government came under fire for failing to protect swimmers.
With swimmers and surfers largely avoiding Avalon and other beaches today, the NSW Opposition questioned the state of shark nets off the city's beaches.
"We have a situation that shark nets are deteriorating, the minister has not renewed the quota on catching sharks, and the time of the Westpac shark (aerial) patrol has been cut,'' Opposition industry spokesman Duncan Gay told ABC radio.
But NSW Primary Industries Minister Ian Macdonald said aerial surveillance was ineffective at dawn and dusk, when all three recent attacks occurred, as neither helicopters nor fixed-wing planes could spot the predators at those times.
"That's why the Government is focused on its shark meshing program, and resourcing our lifeguards with better equipment,'' Mr Macdonald said.
"There is no doubt the shark meshing program we have in place on 51 beaches from Newcastle to Wollongong is extremely successful, with only one fatal shark attack on a meshed beach in NSW since the program began in 1937.''
The shark net at Avalon had been checked the day before the attack and was fine, a spokesman for Mr Macdonald said.
The minister's office also said about 95 per cent of the Government's shark fishing quota consisted of harmless shark species, so increasing quotas would not prevent attacks.
"Great whites aren't included in it, they are protected,'' his spokesman said.
Today, 16-year-old Sarah Lindop said her brother was in good spirits after his surgery, with a hospital spokesman confirming he was now in a satisfactory condition in a general ward.
"He's been really, really brave,'' Sarah told the Seven Network.
"He's joking and stuff, he's in really good spirits.
"I don't know how much of all of this he'll remember, but he's doing really well.''
Sarah said her brother routinely went for a surf in the morning, often by himself, and was lucky his dad had gone with him yesterday.
Immediately after the attack, Mr Lindop dragged his son from the water and off-duty surf club members helped care for him until paramedics arrived.
"There's been a lot about (the danger of) going out really early and stuff but at the end of the day it's everyone's routine here, that's what the culture is,'' Sarah said.
The Environmental Protection Authority, which is analysing the bite, will release its findings within days, but it is expected to confirm a great white was the culprit.
Navy clearance diver Paul de Gelder lost a hand and a leg and was lucky to survive after being mauled by a 2.7-metre bull shark in Sydney Harbour on February 11.
Just a day later, 33-year-old surfer Glenn Orgias was attacked at Bondi Beach by a 2.5m great white that shook him and nearly severed his left hand.

Cocaine haul found hidden in frozen sharks
Wed Jun 17, 12:51 pm ET
MEXICO CITY (Reuters) – Mexico's navy has seized more than a tonne of cocaine stuffed inside frozen sharks, as drug gangs under military pressure go to greater lengths to conceal narcotics bound for the United States.
Armed and masked navy officers cut open more than 20 shark carcasses filled with slabs of cocaine after checking a container ship in a container port in the southern Mexico state of Yucatan, the navy and Mexican media said Tuesday.
"We are talking about more than a tonne of cocaine that was inside the ship," Navy Commander Eduardo Villa told reporters after X-ray machines and sniffer dogs helped uncover the drugs. "Those in charge of the shipment said it was a conserving agent but after checks we confirmed it was cocaine," he said.
Drug gangs are coming up with increasingly creative ways of getting drugs into the United States -- in sealed beer cans, religious statues and furniture -- as Mexico's military cracks down on the cartels moving South American narcotics north.
President Felipe Calderon has sent 45,000 troops and federal police across Mexico to try to crush powerful smuggling cartels. But traffickers armed with a huge arsenal of grenades and automatic weapons are far from defeated, worrying Washington as violence spills over into U.S. states like Arizona.
Some 2,750 people have died in drug violence in Mexico this year, a pace similar to that of 2008, when 6,300 were killed.
Led by Mexico's most wanted man, Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman, smugglers from the Pacific state of Sinaloa are fighting a turf war with rivals. Guzman seeks to control Mexican and Central American smuggling routes into the United States.
