Title: a Little Good News
Post by: devon on July 18, 2008, 11:47:06 AM
Hey Y'all.

I had my labs run yesterday and the creatinine was actually DOWN a notch!  In June, it was 6.7.  Yesterday, it was 5.7! Sweet!  I asked them to immediately fax the results to my nephrologist with the creatinine circled!

The idea is that perhaps I can continue to push off dialysis that's scheduled for August 15.  I will do new labs August 1st and hope that this trend continues or, at least, stays the same.  If it's below 6...  well... you know.

I am so hopeful!

Well... I am seriously working on finding out WHY my creatinine went down.  If I learn anything, I'll pass it along immediately!

Creatinine can decline for a number of reasons, including reduction in nutrition resulting from feelings of unwellness associated with renal failure.  Also, patients declining into renal failure who have been put on a low protein diet will experience gradual decline of muscle mass, and since a large amount of creatinine in the body is generated by the breakdown and repair of muscle tissue, the less muscle, the lower the creatinine. I noticed that during the first year I was on dialysis, my pre-treatment creatinine value declined over the months from an average of around 750 to an average of 550, even though my residual renal function was getting worse.  The decline in my case was completely due to restriction of protein in the diet, nausea and vomiting, and loss of muscle mass.

Your creatinine decline could also arise because your kidneys are recovering, since 1% of patients even after being diagnosed with endstage renal failure experience a spontaneous recovery.  The bottom line is that you just have to wait to find out what the real reason for the decline was.
