Miniature dachshund gnaws off diabetic owner's toe
Fri Jul 4, 12:35 AM ET
ALTON, Ill. - An Illinois woman says her beloved miniature dachshund gnawed off her right big toe while she was asleep. Linda Floyd told the Alton Telegraph for a story Wednesday that her beloved Roscoe was euthanized because of safety concerns.
The 56-year-old says she has no feeling in her toes because of nerve damage from diabetes. She discovered the toe missing after waking from a nap Monday. She called her daughter, who phoned 911.
A veterinarian says the toe had been bandaged because of a healing hangnail. That might have somehow attracted the dog.

Sorry lola.
I don't know why the pet had to be destroyed.
It's not like Roscoe was a danger to society.
And the woman never even woke up, so she wasn't hurting.

Now I'm going to have to nap with my shoes on.

it is like a dog sniffing out cancer
why was he put down
sounds like an act of love to me
he must have been gentle
was the toe going to have to be removed eventually

As an owner of two miniature dachshunds myself, I have to speak up for the breed and remark that the dog might well have performed a service in amputating a gangrenous toe before it caused potentially lethal septicemia!

and those puppies are so cute :banghead;

Nothing in the news here about the story locally. So it is hard to determine the health of the womans bandage toe and why the dog was euthinized. But being in the veterinary technician program, I may have an idea. When dealing with pigs, their tails are docked so that other pigs will not chew on them and become "blood hungry" and then will start to knaw at other pigs all the time. Tey would eventually start killing each other after tasting blood. There maybe a state, county, or local law governing this also due to health concerns to other community members. However this is all unknown without the proper facts as to why the dog was euthinized.
But one thing I keep wondering is, Why did she call her daughter who then called 911 instead of calling 911 in the first place or going to the ER. ???
And I have noticed this in a few other news stories I read on the internet.
