Title: Exit site pain
Post by: Adam_W on June 26, 2008, 06:37:12 PM
Does anyone know if it is normal to have exit site pain after the first dwell? Yesterday I had a one litre dwell, and my exit site has been sore ever since. Nothing has hit it, and it hasn't been pulled on or anything (we just pulled out the transfer set when we did the fill/dwell, and we didn't do a dressing change). Could it maybe be irritation from the first time my peritoneum was full of fluid? I go in tomorrow for my next training session, and my nurse will look at it. I'm going to be so frustrated if I can't continue training and have to have the catheter fixed or redone. Even more annoying, I'm dialyzing right now and any pain meds I take would just be dialyzed off, so I have to wait another two hours before I can take anything that will work.

I don't do PD but I'm glad that you're having it looked at tomorrow.

You've not long had your catheter fitted have you ? If you think about it your exit site is going to be tender considering you got a hole in your side ! I have been doing pd for 4 years now and every now and again mine still gets sore , eg.. when i have been bending or moving around alot . As long as there is no discharge coming from it all should be ok , just give your body more time to heal , approx 6-8 weeks after fitting of catheter before everything is back to normal.

My nurse looked at it today, and although it was kind of red (irritation), there was no drainage, and the pain went away after the new dressing was applied. I did another 1L fill/dwell/drain, and it went perfect. My nurse wanted me to walk around with the fluid in, but we left the line in place, so my nurse and I were walking around the in-centre treatment area with me hooked up and pushing my IV pole along with me. I got to talk to three in-centre patients about PD, and at least two of them are quite interested in it. So, all in all it was a good day.

Adam,

Glad today went well for you.  Just like Kickstart said, your catheter is so new and will be tender for a while.  My biggest problem in my first few months was not the catheter area but more where they made the incision.  Even after 9 months, that area becomes tender off and on.
